Seeing Red

By now all of you must know that red is going to be THE color of this Fall (and certainly holiday) season. All the major fashion houses and brands have at least one red item in their collection, as well as our dear JCrew.

Even before seeing the Fall previews I had sort of a heads-up. One day back in the spring I was strolling around in the neighborhood with my daughter and I happened to witness a photo shooting for some fashion magazine. I couldn't help taking a pic myself, the model outfit was so beautiful, don't you think?

That's when I understood that we would probably see a lot of red in the Fall. Unfortunately red is not for me. Even if I wouldn't say that red is exclusively for brunettes (the Versace dress that January Jones wore at the Golden Globes put the word end to that conception, I think:)

it is a color that fights with my warmer skin tone and hair. I can do a bottom but not a dress or top and certainly not in that particular shade of crimsom red that the model is wearing.
Luckily for me the red that Jcrew is using this season (vibrant flame, decadent red) is much more orange-y. I can do orange, as far as it is a warm orange, in fact it's one of the most flattering colors on me.
However, as we all know, sometimes JCrew uses the same color code for shades that look quite different. For example, the lovely Teddie dress and the beautiful Origami sheath dress in wool crepe are supposed to come in the same "decadent red" shade. But they look quite different, at least on my computer monitor:

This is the perfect example of what I was saying before: I can do a red like the Teddie but not a red like the Origami (if the website pic is in fact a good rendering of that shade. I haven't seen it in real life, so I cannot be 100% sure). Too bad because I could actually have some use for the Origami (a more classic and elegant dress), but not for the Teddie (which I really like, don't get me wrong, but can't see myself wearing, at least not in red).

So, I think I will limit myself to a red accessory, like a scarf or a bag, to satisfy my "red craving". As many of you I was drawn to the Edie purse in flame but I really can't stand that handle and the price is too high for something that is more of a craving as I said that a real need. So when I was shopping the Zara sale back in July I saw the perfect candidate: a small cross-body bag in the perfect shade of red, with a shape that is more attuned to my taste than the Edie and very cheap ($29.99):

The reason why it was so cheap is that it isn't leather but poliurethane (basically, plastic) but it looks like leather and I am not picky as far as it doesn't look cheap (it doesn't). I think it will look great with my camel coats and as I said I don't want to invest in a red bag.
In the picture above I am wearing another Zara find. Do you remember this Look from the Fall previews?

I remember someone saying on the JCA that she didn't know why anyone would want to look like a big pumpkin. In any case, the long skirt is another big trend for Fall and another one that as a petite I should be careful with. I don't want to be sucked in and put a lot of $$$ in something that will probably last only one season and is not even particularly flattering on me. However, I was drawn to this Zara skirt, that I had seen/tried several times before and finally bought on sale (I would have bought it before but it was a "size M fits all" which means that it needs alterations, so I waited for a sale). Ironically, it's the color that I really liked, a beautiful strawberry red. This was part of the spring collection (it is unlined) but the fabric is substantial enough to be warn through Fall with tight and boots and has a beautiful draping.
Now don't laugh, because I am not going to use it to wipe the floor like in this pictures (I am having it hemmed):

And with the beautiful cashmere cable sweater in heather camel, which is the only thing in the JCrew early Fall collection, along with the cafe capris in yatch blue, that I wanted so badly to pay FP. I am wearing the XS:

Camel and red make such a beautiful pair that I am tempted by the Classic mini in felted wool in decadent red:

but I will resist because I have the atomic mini from last year (I don't think I can pull off the No. 2 Pencil Skirt in Double Serge Wool in the vibrant flame color, but it's beautiful).

Are you "seeing red" this season?

  1. Love the skirt - super cute on you! Question for you on the JC cashmere - I bought a bunch of things a couple of years back and was soooo frustrated by the pilling for such an expensive item I have yet to buy it ever again. Do you have the same issues (under arms is where it was awful!)? Or have they upgraded their quality to address this issue?

  3. I have that same floor length skirt that you have, and I should tell you to wash it first before getting it hemmed. I didn't. and now I am so sad! I love that skirt!

  4. I've always loved red and am looking for a red bag too. I like the Edie, but agree that it's just too expensive. The alternative you found is super cute.

The camel sweater is a great pairing with the skirt.

  5. Yeah, I think Zara was a little ahead of the trend on this one! They have a beautiful red wool dress on sale right now, but it just doesn't fit my shape well. sigh, for 19.99 I could have been right in with the red.

I shall content myself with the flame pencil skirt- and you're right on with the red purse. Such a nice way to get the colour in.

Beautiful look with the tan sweater and red maxi!

  6. Ema, I nearly bought that same bag! And Zara had another one, with perforated leather -- but I passed up both. And regret it! Ah well. But that skirt, what a great buy, I love it and I love it on you. I have bought quite a lot of red, and even before J Crew's recent roll-out. Must slow down before my closet looks like one big tomato.

  7. Nice Zara finds! I cannot wait for their US online shopping to open. I love that skirt with the cable sweater. Camel and red is wonderful together. I must look into putting something together in that color combo, thank you :)

  8. What a great find at Zara! And it looks fabulous with the JC cashmere sweater. I love the combination of red and camel. It always looks so luxurious. I think I'm also going to wearing a lot of red this fall. I bought a red silk dress on sale a couple weeks ago - it was actually from spring, but the colour is perfect for this fall.

  9. I also love red with camel. Great outfit Ema!
I have a pair of beautiful red wool pants from JCrew 2004, they would be perfect with the camel Icon trench in wool cashmere, which I've ordered and is coming today but we'll see, it has to go back if it's not perfect as I did pay full price for it.
I also need to try on the pants as I don't love wearing trousers.
I would really love the origami dress in decadent red, it is beautiful!!

  10. emily, I have last year cashmere was much better than the year before (I have two crewnecks and two turtlenecks and they didn't pill at all) and this year's seems even better, even if I can't judge how it will hold up yet. This particular one (the cable one) is a 7-gauge cashmere (thicker than the 12-gauge of the crewnecks and turtlenecks) and it's incredibly soft. Sometimes it depend on the color though (my light-colored cashmeres pills less than the dark-colored ones). Hope it helps!

Tisha, now I am curious. hat do you mean? Please explain!

maryeb, thanks. I also like the JCrew Rigby saddle bag but it is still a bit too expensive right now.

thatdamngreendress, thanks! You are right, Zara was ahead of the red trend and they had several red offerings in their spring line. I think I tried that same red dress and it was horrible on me too, too bad!

dinster, ha! I almost bought two of these bags, it also came in a beautiful "casablanca blue" but then I thought that I didn't need two. Love your Zara reviews BTW!

sparrowandsparkles, I am very excited for Zara online too. The site is up and running and you can already preview the Fall collection and the prices. It only misses the option "Add to bag".

Louise, thanks! I hope to see that dress on your blog soon.

DaniBP, can't wait to see the cashmere Icon trench on you! I am thinking about the Origami, I need a dress like that this Fall, I hope to be able to find it in a store and try it on soon.

  11. Ema, just that the skirt shrunk in the wash. I had it hemmed to 1cm from the floor, and after washing it, it is now 2 inches shorter! So maybe if you wash it first, you may not need hemming with the length that you will end up with?

  13. Ema, I LOVE the outfit with the red maxi skirt! I actually looked all over for this at Zara and never came across one. I'll have to do some stalking on Ebay! It looks lovely on you and I love how you paired it with the sweaters.
