OK, It's Adorable But Is It for Grown-Ups (Styling the Hearthrob Shirt)?
Good morning, I hope you all had a relaxing and fun weekend. Mine was pretty busy: we invited friends over for dinner on Saturday night and yesterday we went to Chinatown for the New Year's Parade. I also got to watch a very good movie yesterday night, that I highly recommend if you haven't seen yet: 50/50 with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and the always funny Seth Rogers (the movie manages to be very funny, thanks to Seth and a very good script, all while dealing with a heavy topic like cancer threatening to take a young life). I think that Joseph Gordon-Hewitt is the new Gregory Peck, don't you agree?
Anyway, as you know I fell for the heart throb shirt and I got to wear it Saturday night. I wanted to post pics of my outfit and a few styling ideas for this shirt because, as many of you, when I saw it for the first time in the catalog I thought that being over 40 I would never wear a shirt with little hearts on it. It turns out that in real life the print is more sophisticated than cheesy, if a bit quirky, so my answer to the question "Is this shirt for grown-ups?" is "Yes, if you don't wear it on Valentine's Day".
No, seriously, you can even wear it on Valentine's Day, I am just jalous because my husband will be travelling that week and I will get to spend Valentine's Day alone. I will live vicariously through my daughter and probably throw a party for her friends. By the way, my daughter told me recently that she is "falling in love" with a girl in her classroom and I thought it was very cute (she said it with a daydream expression). I remember "being in love" with a girlfriend at her age, so I am not worried ;-).
To go back to the shirt, first I would like to point out that the background is black and not navy. I am 100% positive about it because I tried it with a lot of black items and it blended seamlessy. It could be a navy so dark that it reads black but in this case call it navy would be a sophism.
Because of the black background, it is easier to style it for the evening than for daywear. The black and red combo can read a little bit custom-y, especially in the daylight, so I will start with a few evening outfits.
The easiest way to style this shirt is, quite obviously, to pair it with a black bottom. You can give in its intrinsic romantism (please forgive me if I like to throw big philosophical words at you this morning. I know it's a Monday and you probably you needed a double dose of coffee to make it through your morning but I can't help myself) and pair it with a feminine skirt, like this pleated skirt with self-tie from the Gap (that I wish was 2 inches longer):
For a more sophisticated look, you can try it with a maxi-skirt. This is a cotton jersey one from Joe Fresh, it is inexpensive ($24) and will be a staple of my summer. The fabric is doubled (I mean that the skirt is made of two layers of jersey), so it isn't sheer (genious!) and it is substantial enough to be worn year-round:
The skirt itself is pretty casual, so I added an embellished elastic belt to make the ensemble more elegant:
Saturday night I wore it with my Curator pants, which are THE ultimate dressy pants IMO. I had my hair pulled in a side ponytail (by the way how gorgeous Diane Lane looked in her one-shoulder blue dress and a ponytail at the SAG awards? Am I the only addicted to awards?) and it added (in a positive way) to the quirky-ness of the shirt. I felt a bit Amelie Poulaine. I took a pic before my friends arrived buy it came out blurry. These were taken earlier in the afternoon and before the pony-tail:
By the way, the first thing that my friend (who is almost 50) did when I opened the door was telling me how much she liked the shirt.
I wore my orang-y flats (that you can vaguely see in the pic above) more because of comfort issues than for styling but they turned out to be perfect with the outfit and that gave me some ideas. In fact a bright coral like the bright papaya is the perfect color to wear with this shirt instead of black. It doesn't work very well with a real red IMO, like the maraschino cherry (here with the cafe trousers), it is more of a washed-out red:
But my bright papaya cashmere cardigan from HO09 is perfection and it makes it more suitable for the day:
The other option for daywear is to pair it with a bottom in the tones of gold, olive or camel. Here are a few ideas (and the last two are office-appropriate, I think):
OK, so what do you think? Do you think it is for grown-ups or it is still not for you? Please share! By the way, I don't want to convince anybody to buy this shirt, after all I don't work for JCrew and you are free to think that it is childish and people who are not in their 20s and wear it are regressive. I just wanted to show you that it does work for me and I think I am going to wear it a lot beyond Valentine's day.

OOTD and A Few Sale Picks
It is POURING today and I had to walk more than ten blocks in the rain, all trying to look polished at arrival.
I am going to show you my outfit at the end of this post, if I have time (it doesn't involve any new item).
First, I wanted to post a few of my sale picks that I have received this week (except for one, that I bought and received earlier).
The real trigger of my order was the Scalopped lace shell. I am very surprised that this one didn't sell out during the recent 40% (I got mine with the 30% off). For a mere $27 it is a great piece to own, as it substantial enough that it can be worn now under a sweater/jacket and later on its own. I almost think that it was worth the original price of $69.50 but I had initially settled on the black one as ivory tends to wash me out and decided to wait for a sale as I have a few black tops already (who doesn't?). I ended up throwing the ivory too in my order because for the life of me I couldn't find anything else to reach the free shipping minimum that would be returnable.
To my surprise, I really, really like the ivory. It fits perfectly in the XS but because the cotton in the back is a little bit sheer, it shows the lines of your bra. Side view:
When I put it on, I immediately thought of an outfit with my newly acquired crocodile-print pencil skirt (that I have been chasing for years and finally showed up on the JCA for a very decent price) and factory mosaic necklace (this is the item that I bought during a previous 30% off. It should still popback and even if it wasn't exactly what I was excpecting I have so many things to pair with these colors that I am happy with it):
While I think that I am going to wear the ivory shell mostly in the summer, the black one has a more wintery feeling to it. It is more slimming as you can see and it can be dressed up or down. I am trying it with the cafe capris in wool in camel and the factory pluma necklace. This is my second pair of cafe capris (as you know I have the yatch blue ones) and the 0 felt much smaller than the other ones that I have, almost a size smaller. I almost took them back but I wore them a little bit around the house and they stretched out a bit.
I have to say, I really like this outfit:

This necklace makes a nice statement but it isn't as pretty as the retail version IMO. I paid $28, which is OK, but the quality is definitively different.

JCrew February Catalog: Fitting Room Pics
Thank you so much for all the sweet comments to my previous post. I just want to let you know that even if I find it difficult sometimes to comment back in a timely manner (for some reason that I have to investigate why the new "Reply" comment feature doesn't show when I view the blog on my computer/smartphone/USB-deprived device) I read and appreciate all your comments. And I also wanted to say "Welcome" to the new followers!
Since you seem to care, this week started off on the right foot. My husband is still travelling but my migraine is gone (sort of; at least I don't throw up in other people's bathrooms), the stressful situation that was haunting me last week has become less stressful and I even had better luck with my orders.
So yesterday I was worries-free and I made it to a big store to sample the new collection. I tried on a lot of stuff and came home with two items (three actually, but one of them is a classic that I have been wanting to own for a long time and I finally took the plunge, helped by a little discount that mys ps gave me).

I would start with the fanfare print, which is probably the highlight of this collection and has been declined in many pieces.
First, the new version of the Jules dress. The fanfare print in this dress comes in a black/whit-ish colorway, which is probably why I didn't like it that much. This is a 0, fits like the other Jules (fabric is rayon, not silk):
The next one is a popover. At first I thought it was a perfect shirt, but it is a popover (so it is not numerically sized). Very thin cotton and a $88 price tag. I liked the print better in this navy colorway, size XS:
Another popover, but longer and in a different blue. This was in the beach section and it is in fact a cover-up. I think it was $78. This is the XS:
Thefanfare print also comes in a pair of shorts and a merino sweater (navy) that I didn't try on but the best of all IMO was this jacket. They didn't have the pencil skirt that we have seen in the Catalog previews but it is the same color/fabric of the N.2 so you can make a suit. This jacket is GORGEOUS, very well made and reasonably priced ($168). This is a 0 but I felt constricted in it, so I would probably go with a 2:
Speaking of N.2 pencil skirt, the Gardenshade Floral one was on selling floor. I don't like this print (I don't like flolars in general, with few exceptions) but the fit was fantastic. This is a 0 (retails for $128):
They had another N.2 that is probably going to be store-only. It's a paisley print in a lavander/purple on white background. Very purple, so not for me. The cotton is a lightweight one, not the double-serge (so less stiff than the double-serge), but it was lined if I am not wrong. This one was $105 or $108. I am trying a 0:
Next, another skirt, one of those "new proportions" skirts that we have seen in the pring previews. I am petite and this style obviously overwhelms me. This was a 0 and it was $198 or $178, not sure. It is fully lined. Welcome on board!
The next one is the candy tweed skirt. This one is a mini and it comes with a matching jacket. I have my share of Chanel-inspired jackets and I was't interested in this one, but I wanted to show it to you (I think the price was $278). They are both a size 0 (a bit iron lady, non?):
The last skirt that I want to show you is the crinkle chiffon one. This is a 0 in warm peacock (which is really like the viridian green, in case you were wondering. See tee-shirt). Fits TTS and hits my knee (it is shorter on the model):
And in navy, with my favorite item from the new catalog, the heartrobe silk shirt (this is a size 0. I could have gone down a size but it was already pulling on my chest and I prefer it a little more blous-y). Interestingly, the shirt has a 2% spandex content in it:
I must admit that when I saw the picture with the hearts shirt and skirt in the catalog I thought "I am never going to buy a shirt with little hearts on it", but it was really too cute (and inexplicably sexy) to pass (and the discount helped). Also, the hearts look a little bit like an animal print from afar and the print is more versatile than I thought.
Another item that I had admired in the catalog preview was the striped bateau sweater that is shown with the yellow pants. In real life the color is very different (unless it is a totally different item), it is a tan/dark navy. I was shocked by the price ($105) but it fits beautifully (the fabric is a blend of cotton, rayon and spandex that makes it sort of rough, very difficult to explain). Very classic. I tried the XS first but was a bit baggy in the body, the XXS was perfect (first pic is a XS, second pic is a XXS):
I got it because of the discount but I have to think about it. Besides the price and the fact that I don't really need another striped sweater, it is VERY snag-prone. Thoughts?
Last, big disappointment on the cafe capris in morse code jacquard. These are beautiful pants (the pattern is raised) but really unflattering (they are very thick). This is a 0:

More Boden
So I had a very bad week. My husband was travelling and I came down with a cold, which gave me a very bad migraine that lasted two days. In addition to that I received some distressing news and I had to go to school evening events in the cold. Let's just say that on Thursday I ended up throwing up in the bathroom of a friend of mine (I should add that this friend is a stay at home dad) while I was changing my daughter who had peed in her pants on our way to a drop-off playdate at his place (I had to carry her for three blocks and I got pee all over my puffer, which probably triggered the throwing up, that was already threatening due to the migraine).
In other news I received three more packages from Boden and I am afraid to say that there were more misses than hits.
One of the items that I was really excited about in the Boden Spring catalog was the Notch neck tunic. I have the version from two years ago which I LOVE and you can see here, so when I see that it had made a comeback in a beautiful yellow I immediately pulled the trigger. I ordered my regular size, a 2.
First of all the color is not the bright and sunny yellow seen in the pic with the tunic worn by the model; it is more of a mustard-y yellow as the color swatch shows (when you click on YEL to make your selection). This was already a disappointment, but the fit is also a little bit off. Not nearly as flattering as my other tunic, for some reason that I can't pintpoint exactly. I would say that the waist (which is actually an empire) gathering sits a little bit higher and because of that the tunic doesn't flow as nicely from there. All in all it appears a bit shorter everywhere. It could be that my body as changed in the meanwhile, or also an effect of the color. In any case, I don't like it enough and I don't think that ordering a size up will drastically change the result in a positive way (it will be too big on top).

The other item that I received (besides a pair of ADORABLE ballet flats for my daughter) is the Pool party tunic from the clearance section. I had already ordered this tunic last year in the yellow colorway when it came out but didn't like it enough for the price. It is now VERY CHEAP, so I thought that I would give it a try in the Rosebud Pavillon color. At the last minute I threw in another one in the Aqua Pavillon colorway, in case that the pink colorway would be too similar to my other Boden tunic.
I don't know what to say bout this one. The fit is good but when they say "Hello Mrs. Robinson", they really mean it. It is fairly sheer, so it can only be worn at the beach/pool or in a resort setting. What I don't like in this tunic is the neckline. It is almost a loophole but an asymmetric one and it just sits weird (poor execution IMO). Plus, they sew "rhinestones" all around it, but they are the same quality as the jewels that you can buy at the Craft store around the corner and that my daughter uses for her "projects". If I had to keep it, I woud probably take them off. I like the colors though, especially in the pink one, where the green is more of an aqua, and I think I could wear on vacation even in the evening with a pair of sandals (the Aqua Pavillon colorway looks more like a cover-up to me). I am tempted to keep it (sans jewels) but I would appreciate any opinion that you might have on this one!

Too bad because on the other side the color was really great and I really wanted it to work, since I don't have any red dress.
OK, I think that this ends my Boden adventure. I don't think I am going to order anything else for a while. After the week that I had and these failures I needed a pick-me up and I caved on some fs items at JCrew that I am pretty sure I am going to like and won't make me feel... menopaused just yet.

JCrew: A Few Try-Ons (And An OOTD)
I have been to two larger (larger than the Collection store, which is my "local" store) stores last week and took a few pics of the new arrivals. Nothing terribly exciting, also because most of this stuff has been around for a while. Anyway, I tried on as much as possible for future final sale purposes ;-).
First, the Gimlet skirt in coaster stripe. I tried this one twice already, the first time even before that it became available on the website. I really like it but in real life it flares out a lot more than on the model and I feel like I have nowhere to go in this skirt. I tried a size 2 and felt a bit like a ballerina of a music box. I will probably get it if I find it on super-sale becase of the limited wear (for my lifestyle it is an occasion skirt):
Next I grabbed the Drawstring dress in peeble dots. The pattern is the same as the Blythe blouse in peeble dots but the fabric is 100% cotton and the color reads darker. This is most definitively a cover-up because of the fabric and the cut. I am trying a XS (it was pulling it a bit on my chest):
Another item from the cover-up section that I felt like trying on is the Sundowner tunic in engineered stripe. I tried a XXS because it looked huge. I can't suffer collars when I am on the beach and I don't need it for the city, so this one has no place in my closet. But it felt nice on (not $88 nice but nice). I would probably get a XS because in the XXS the sleeves were tight at the cuffs and it just fit everywhere else (the collar was tight too when buttoned):
The following is the Painter zip tee in stripe in the vintage cobalt color. OK, I would say that this one fits small. I am wearing a XS and it was very fitted. The annoying thing is that I couldn't zip up the zipper in the back by myself (I didn't try it to pass it over my head with the zipper up though):
I have probably mentionned that a denim jacket is on my spring list this year, so while I was there I tried the two denim jackets that they were offering. The first one is this uber-expensive ($280) from their "denim shop" (can't find online). The fit was great but it was very stiff and too dark for spring for my taste. This is the XS:
The other one is the Nolita jacket in Great Lakes wash. This is their classic Nolita (that I got to try for the first time) in their newest wash. It was very soft and had the perfect weathered look. I might get this one as soon as a promo comes around. The only thing that may disappoint some is that it is kind of lightweight, it almost feels like a shirt. This is the XS:
That's the cavalry skirt, BTW (size 0). I found it in a store last week, incredibly (and it wasn't a return because they had three of them). I still loved it and the price with the 40% off was too good to pass so it came home with me. This is the outfit that I wore on my shopping trip (it was pouring, so I wore it with my rainboots):
The last item that I wanted to show you is the Double-breasted Ivy jacket. They didn't have a size 2 to try on on the floor, so I tried a 0 just to get a feeling. I really thought that I would fall in love with this but the double breasted style is not for me, I think:

The first one is this uber-expensive ($280) from their "denim shop" (can't find online). The fit was great but it was very stiff and too dark for spring for my taste. This is the XS:
The other one is the Nolita jacket in Great Lakes wash. This is their classic Nolita (that I got to try for the first time) in their newest wash. It was very soft and had the perfect weathered look. I might get this one as soon as a promo comes around. The only thing that may disappoint some is that it is kind of lightweight, it almost feels like a shirt. This is the XS:
That's the cavalry skirt, BTW (size 0). I found it in a store last week, incredibly (and it wasn't a return because they had three of them). I still loved it and the price with the 40% off was too good to pass so it came home with me. This is the outfit that I wore on my shopping trip (it was pouring, so I wore it with my rainboots):
The last item that I wanted to show you is the Double-breasted Ivy jacket. They didn't have a size 2 to try on on the floor, so I tried a 0 just to get a feeling. I really thought that I would fall in love with this but the double breasted style is not for me, I think:
