Mini Stripes, Maxi Length

A couple of months ago I tried the shoreline-stripe dress and filed it under "buy on sale". I really liked it but $78 seemed really excessive for a spaghetti-straps knit dress, especially when things gets marked down as quickly as we have recently seen. Well, in this case the waiting strategy wasn't the winning one because the dress is still full price and completely sold-out in NYC. When and why that happened I don't know (this dress didn't receive much attention in the blogosphere, as far as I know), but when I found out that I could no longer find it in the stores around here I started to stalk the website for a popback in my size (XS). Luckily it did popback during one of those free shipping-no minimum promos so I could order it without thinking twice.
Here is the pic from the fitting room:

The one that I received seems a little bit shorter but maybe I just need to adjust the straps and pull it a little bit longer (plus, I belted it like on the website):

I am still not sure if it's worth $78 and I am tempted to return it and wait for it to go on sale, especially because while I was in Italy I purchased another striped dress, even if a maxi one.
This dress has a story behind. I saw it on a lady in NYC over Memorial Day weekend and I became completely obsessed with it. I spent hours on the computer trying to find out where it could come from but couldn't find it online. When I had already given up on it, I found it at Zara in Italy. Yes, it was a Zara dress, why didn't I think of it before? I tend to forget about Zara but a lot of people shop there in the US too, and especially in NY where we can count at least 5 stores.
It is not easy to find a maxi dress that fits me well and doesn't overwhelm me. As you know I am petite and maxis are often cut for taller ladies (I am completely sized out from the JCrew ones). This one has the advantage of having a drawstring with a rope belt at the waist so I can adjust its length by making the top more or less blouson-y:

Under the dress, in lieu of a bra, I am wearing a Theory tubular top, that holds everything in (I could wear it without a bra but I don't like when my boobs are balloning around under a strapless dress). It also comes in light blue stripes but I thought that the red one was more Riviera-chic (the lady at the playground was wearing hers with a Panama hat and it was the chic-est thing under the sun, even if I don't think I can pull off that look).
The best thing is that this beauty was only $27 EU, against the $78 of the JCrew one.

Which one do you prefer? More Zara to come next. H

Have a happy Sunday!

do you think the rowboat dress is worth full price?has it held up during washing?

  2. I also like the Zara and while the JCrew dress is really sweet I'm not sure about $78. How will it wash up? I've had terrible luck washing JCrew knits.
I bought some t shirts for my trip from JCrew and after only one washing two are unravelling.

Ina my rowboat did wash up just fine. I have washed it twice and hung it to dry. I am bringing it to France, I have just the right long linen cardigan to wear over it (I feel a little bare just in the dress, it is a bit short!)

  3. I also like the Zara dress on you Ema! The color is gorgeous and it fits you really well, too. The Zara at my local mall had them back at the beginning of May in both colors, maybe a green one too...can't remember, but I do know that I thought they were super cute. I say if you aren't 100% sure about the J.Crew dress then return it and try to get it on sale later. At least you know how it fits in case that sale ends up being final (which is about to happen any day now).

  4. I really like the J Crew dress, especially belted, but that Zara dress is such a great deal and looks wonderful on you! I would keep the Zara. Wish we would get one out here... I'll be keeping an eye out and hopefully get to shop one this summer. The closest we have is Vancouver in Canada.

  5. Ema!

I'm glad you had a great time in Italy. I love both dresses, although the Maxi is more unusual. What did you get at Vuitton??

  8. ina, I actually returned my rowboat because I wasn't reaching for it. I have the Carly dress from last year that I can wear in the same occasions. I think I have too many charcoal dresses, but if you think that you will wear it, it is worth FP IMO (hope it makes sense).

DaniBP, that happens to me more and more frequently too. This one looks like it could easily develop holes now tha I think about it.

FFM, yes I think it also comes in green stripes and in solid colors. I think I will keep the JCrew for now and try to catch it on sale. Thank you for stopping by!

sweet tea, I recommend a stop at Zara while you are in Italy. It is cheaper than here (although the euro is pretty strong right now) and you get tax free on top of it.

dominique, thanks! Post on my Vuitton "souvenir" coming soon (it's not a bag)

Louise, yes Zara had definitively some cute stuff this season (always, actually). Stay tuned, more finds in my next post.

mrs anketell, I bought it online so I have 60 days to return it. I will wait and see if it goes on sale and can re-buy it for less.

  10. I'm a little wary of J Crew knits. But that's just me. I like the maxi and can totally see you wearing a hat with it.
