Bumping Into Celebrities (and a Celebrity Worthy Top)

It doesn't happen that often but sometimes I bump into celebrities in the neighborhood. Not necessarely famous people who live (or have real estate) in the neighborhood like Madonna (whom I never "met" but recently moved to NYC), just celebrities strolling around. This past winter I bumped into Bono Vox (from U2) at my cappuccino bar. I just about died when I saw him (I literally walked at less than a foot past him while he was saying "See you" to the barman, who actually seemed as surprised as me, not like he was "seeing him" every day) because when I was younger Bono Vox was my idol and when I was barely eighteen I got lost in the Chateau of Vincennes park in Paris late at night after a concert in the hopes of meeting him and the rest of the band (I wasn't alone and thankfully my aunt, who had the responsibility of me and my friend during the summer vacations that I used to spend in Paris could easily locate me and drive me home).

Anyway, yesterday afternoon I went with my daughter and MIL for a gelato off Madison Avenue and while we were hanging out and eating our gelato, Debra Messing, her son and what seemed to be her publicist got off a service car and went into the "gelateria" (or whatever you call a place where they sell exclusively ice cream). Actually I noticed her dress before recognizing her (I was thinking that even if you are tall there are maxi-dresses that are just a no-go). I have this fantasy that a celebrity comes up to me and tells me that she likes what I am wearing. That could not have happened yesterday, I was dressed like a trump. I had my periods and I had just thrown on a pair of loose-fitting pants and an old tee. Not that I usually dress up in the eventuality that I might see someone fameous but it is true that it is much more likely to bump into celebrities at my usual cappuccino bar than in this tiny place and when I go there the thought usually crosses my mind, while I was caught off guards yesterday. In any case, I thought she would be more striking in person. Maybe she was only having a bad hair day but without any makeup and in that dress she looked very ordinary and even a little bit washed-out (her eyes were not as emerald green as they appear on the screen). On the other hand, this confirmed the opinion that I had of her as of a very down-to-earth and lovely person. She is the kind of actress who is loved by women, I think, and I regret that we don't see her more often at the movies. I never really watched Will & Grace but I really liked her in "The Starter Wife" (a mini-series where she plays the divorcee of a Hoolywood movie producer and also stars the excellent Judy Davis), besides of course in "The Wedding Date" opposite Durmot Mulroney.
Anyway, I just wanted to share because I told my husband yesterday night and he said "Who's that?". Husbands!

Back to my fantasy, I could have certainly had more chances to be asked what I was wearing by a randon celebrity yesterday night, when I went out for dinner with my husband (a block away from where I had spotted Debra). We are starting to take full advantage of the babysitting services provided by my MIL, so yesterday when my hyusband came home early from work we went on a last-minute date. I wish we could do that more often.
In any case as I said I had my periods and I am one of those women who don't wear skirts when they are "sick", so even if my closet is bursting with dresses I wore a pair of white linen Theory pants (the white pants are also a bit off limits but I managed). But the highlight of my outfit was the absolutely beautiful and elusive Heather Lace Shell (44115). I don't know how many people even noticed this top on the website because it sold-out in a blink (but they also made a mini skirt in the same lace that is still available).
I saw it one day at the Collection store and two days later (when I came back to try it again because I couldn't get it out of my mind) it was completely gone. I managed to find one in my size (0) in another store just before leaving for Italy and even if it was expensive for a shell ($148) I thought that it would be my splurge of the season at JCrew because it is really a special piece and I thought it wouldn't make it to sale. Less than three weeks later it was alreay on sale of course and back in many sizes at the Collection store, so they kindly gave me a price adjustment even if I was past the seven-day window (for almost $100 savings that I immediately reinvested in the MUSTHAVE promo).
I truly love this shell though, even at full price. It is the most exquisite lace and fits me like a dream. See, I truly love my lady lace popover and I was sad that I had to put it away for the summer, so this one is to me like the summer version of the lady lace. It looks great with a pencil skirt but can also be dressed down a notch, like in this case:

In case you want to try to get it for the fantastic sale + 30% off price (it comes down to $60 something), you have to know that while the outer shell composition is 79% cotton and 21% nylon, the lining is 100% poly and it has an exposed zipper in the back. However I think that it is a timeless piece and truly stunning (OK, maybe I am exaggerating and probably Madonna wouldn't approach me to ask me "Where did you get that?" but I think it is beautiful).

Do you bump into celebrities? What's your celebrity-related fantasy?

That's it for today. Thanks for listening to my rumblings!

  1. Beautiful top! I can't seem to find it online, even through Shopstyle, so it's good you bought it because it's no longer searchable.

  4. The top is gorgeous, I agree!

I haven't bumped into any celebrities, but I would have loved to have met Bono. He has been spotted in my area hitch-hiking recently. The lucky person who picked him up and drove him back to his hotel got tickets to his show and a public thanks during the concert.

  5. Well of course *we* know who Debra Messing is. *lol* Sounds like your odds are kind of like running into an ex when you aren't wearing your best outfit. The lace shell is beautiful. Did you review the Talbots pink pumps yet?

mrs.anketell, thank you! Yes, that's what pushed me to buy it FP in the first place (I don't have occasions to wear it "the dressy way" this summer)

Rose, thanks! Thanks for sharing the Bono story, I hadn't heard about it.

Gigi, lol. I haven't yet (I just decided what size to keep), it's in the pipeline but I am afraid that I won't be able to review them before the weekend. If you are interested, email me!

stef, I was at Rockefeller yesterday and looked for you (Maria told me that you were trying that top!) But you disappeared before I could say "Hi". The next time, it seems that we bump into each other quite often at JCrew
