Gala Outfit (and A Tennis Dress)

Thank you for your comments yesterday! I will go back and try to finish replying when I have a moment.

As you know I have a Gala to attend tonight and I had promised to show you the two outfits I have picked out. I run a bit late this morning and I kind of made up my mind already but I am going to show you the pics of both anyway. I am still interested in knowing which you think it is the best outfit!

The first one is a dress that you have already seen before. It is a Milly dress that I bought on sale around this time of the year last year. It is a GORGEOUS dress, it fits me like a glow and really, it has no contenders in my closet. The color was called eggplant but it is a navy with a vague purple undertone (still navy though). I think it was called Emily faux-wrap dress:

Do you like the pearl necklace with it? I am undecided about it, I think it is classy but there is probably too much contrast with the color of the dress? I don't know what other necklace I could wear though (ideally something delicate and not overwhelming. If I could dig out my diamond solitaire necklace I would probably wear it).
The only reason why I was hesitating about wearing this dress is that I wore it last year to my BFF party and I am going with her and the same group of people tonight.
So as another option I had in mind a JCrew dress that I bought on ebay a couple of years ago (after much stalking) and didn't have the occasion to wear yet. It was called midnight something (garden?), it is the one with the silk rosettes applique on the front. It is a beautiful dress and very wintery but for some reasons it reads less formal than the Milly one. Don't you think?

The advantage of this one over the Milly (besides the fact that nobody has seen it yet) is that I can wear a velvet jacket over it (it is freezing cold today and I am still a bit sick). I wouldn't wear these shoes (probably the Bettinas with thigts) but I was lazy to change them:

I have my mind set on the Milly but if you prefer the JCrew let me know!

Speaking of party/occasion dresses, I bought a popback from the summer during the last promo. It's the sequin-trim tennis dress and I always wanted to try it on sale (especially when the price dropped to $69) but I didn't want to risk to be stuck with it during final sale.
It is a beautiful summer tweed (althought it is lined in acetate and I think it can be easily winterized) whose texture has almost a feather-like effect:

But there is always a reason why things go so on such deep discount and in fact this dress is a bit ill-fitting. I ordered a size 0 and it fits perfectly in the bust but it is high-waisted and cut very large in the hips so that it makes me look wide:

However I "think" that if I take it to a tailor it would be easy to take in to make it fit more or less like this:

Since I paid $50 for the dress I can take on the expense of having it tailored but I of course the result is never guaranteed. I do have an occasion to wear it in the Spring (navy and white are my daughter's school colors and I am thinking to wear it at the Spring benefit that has a vague school theme). What do you think? Worth the hassle?

OK, off to pick up my daughter and then I will start to get ready. If you have time leave a comment on your favorite outfit (and the tennis dress)!

  1. That Milly takes my breath away and would be my clear choice. I would love to see it with the diamond or perhaps an emerald pendant. Stunning.

  2. Black Jet Beads would be beautiful with the Milly.

    1. That's a great suggestion! I have a long black jet beads necklace that I can wear triple-wrapped or knotted, I am going to try it. Thanks!

  3. Gorgeous dresses. You can't go wrong with either. I really like the Tennis dress...and I'd take it to a tailor to have it altered. I wanted to try it as well...thanks for reviewing it!

    1. Thank you JulieStyles. This is the time to give the tennis dress a try, it is super-cheap and returnable. It is a beautiful dress!

  4. All gorgeous dresses! I'd go with that Milly as well, it's so flattering. I think the pearls look classic and lovely with it, and also think a diamond solitaire or jet beads would be very pretty. I think the tennis dress looks wonderful on you, and think it's worth getting it altered!

    1. Thank you shopwithm! I did wear the jet beads but in retrospect I think I prefer the pearls. Now that I think about it I don't have a proper "evening" necklace to wear with this kind of dresses, something simple and delicate, like a diamond tennis one. Maybe I could ask Santa!

  5. You're right, the Milly! The JC dress reads late summer to me. And I love the suggestion of black jet. Have a wonderful time!

    1. You are right as usual. The cut and fabric of the JCrew are summery even if the print is wintery. Must find another occasion to wear it in September/October.

  6. Love the Milly on you. I also was wondering about the tennis dress and I think the alterations are worth it. Have fun tonight.

    1. Thank you Marsha. I am surprised that this dress (the tennis one) didn't get much attention or reviews, it is a beautiful dress, especially for the price!

  7. The Milly dress is gorgeous! I also think the Tennis dress is worth keeping and getting it tailored. I love the idea of a tweed in winter white, and I think it would look stunning on you once it has been tailored to fit. Have fun at your event!

    1. Thank you Louise. I think this dress even if it doesn't contain wool can be easily winterized with a chunky sweater on top, a la Kors, our favorite look!

  8. I love all, but Milly is too die for! I have wondered about that tennis dress, too, and I think with the alterations it will be amazing!

    1. Yes, the Milly was a good choice. I only had the budget for one Milly dress last year but I would have bought all of them! I think it is very me and I will wear it for years to come (if middle age doesn't come with a thickness in the waist, it is teeeeny around the waist but that's why it fits so well).

  9. Milly is gorgeous, I actually owned the midnight garden dress and wore it to my 40th birthday party but then never wore it so I sold it to a JCA, it was then lost in the mail on the way to her so my dress had a sad end it should not have had! And the tennis dress: I own it. Mine fits me perfectly due to my hip size ( I agree it is bigger in the hip than most "straight-skirt" dresses, I ordered a 2. It is high waisted but somehow the silhouette works. I have not worn it though so I look forward to any styling ideas you may have.
Have fun and I love the suggestion of the black jet beads with the Milly.

    1. Dani, I remember you wearing it for your 40th, I think I voted for it! I could never find a 0 and the one that I have is a size 2 and I think a 0 would fit me better.
Our friend Amy told me that you had ordered the tennis dress and I was curious to know if you like it. I do think it is beautiful but I had one of those "Where would I wear this?" moments when I tried it on, before realizing that it is in my daughter's school colors. As for styling suggestions I think a pearl necklace in this case would complement it for sure. I would avoid white shoes for the bride effect. I think I would try a pair of jeweled flats (thongs) to dress it down!

  10. I hope you wore the Milly & that the black necklace worked. I agree that the tennis dress is worth the alteration. It looks really good on you, Ema.

  11. Hi Gigi, yes I wore the Milly. I have to say that I was the most elegant in the room among those who wore short dresses (a few, including my BFF, were in long and long dresses are always more elegant of course).
Thank you for the adice on the tennis dress, it is good to know that you approve of it ;-).

  13. I think the Milly dress with the pearls is perfect. They white necklace will draw the eye upward and light up your face. Hope you had a wonderful time, whatever you wore.

  14. maybe ask Santa for a black pearl necklace? The black is often a little violet tinged... I really like colored pearls -as pendants too, not even a whole string... just an idea.
