I haven't bought JCrew jewelry at full price in a VERY long time, such a long time in fact that I can't even remember when the last time was. My costume jewelry drawer (actually a box) has reached full capacity, meaning that I have to carefully choose the pieces that I am going to add from now on so as to not replicate what I already have. And let's be honest, after a while all the JCrew baubles start to look the same.
But the Beaded Rose necklace looked very different from everything I have and a true statement piece that 1) isn't gold-toned and 2) isn't sparkly, so I took the plunge and ordered it without seeing it IRL (a rarity for me!)
Let me tell you, this necklace is stunning and totally worth the price IMO (in fact I don't even think that the price tag is excessive compared to other pieces that cost more without having the same impact). My reserve when ordering it was that the color would be too neon-y and not wearable on a day-to-day basis and that the roses and size of the necklace would overwhelm me. But I was surprised that the color goes with a lot of what I have and that the roses, while definitely on the big size seem to frame my face instead of overwhelm it. I would describe the color as a very bright coral, a little bit more orange and it would have been neon-y but in my opinion it manages to stay a true coral. it is perfect to brighten up a plain sweater in a neutral color, like my cashmere turtleneck in heather dusk and I couldn't resist wearing it yesterday just to pick up my daughter at school:
With Valentine's day fast approaching I put together three outfits that are candidates for my Valentine's Day outfit and that you can copy if you have the necklace. Keep in mind that I will probably celebrate Valentine's Day a day later and in warm weather, as I am going to reach my husband in Miami on the 15th (I know I haven't mentioned this on the blog yet but a post on my Miami trip is coming soon). It would be fun if you could vote for your favorite outfit as I will take the winner with me!
Outfit #1: Collection persimmon sequin tank, curator pants, Valentina slingbacks
Very strangely last week the Fifth Avenue store had plenty of the Collection persimmon sequin tank (that I never really noticed or seen before) on the sale rack with 50% off to boot. As you know this kind of saturated orange is one of the colors that is most flattering on me and I don't have any top in a similar shade so it was a no brainer (this is a XS). The necklace, while slightly more pink IRL complements it perfectly:
In Miami I would probably wear the tank and necklace with white pants but I wanted to show you a Northeast-friendly version that you can wear here, especially since the shell is available on the website!!! I just want to show you that the shell has a sexy V-neck in the back, perfect for the warm weather (that you can cover with a cardigan or shawl in the city):
Outfit #2: Hearthrobe shirt, curator pants, bright papaya cashmere cardigan
OK, I won't bring this one to Miami as it reads very wintery but I am probably going to wear it (with different shoes) at my daughter's Valentine's Day breakfast at school next Thursday. I actually fantasized about wearing the hearthrobe shirt with the necklace before buying it but the colors aren't a match as I had hoped, the brightness of the necklace makes the red in the shirt look faded (and in this case the necklace looks much more orange and clashes with the red in the shirt):
However, I think that the bright papaya cashmere cardigan kind of pulls everything together: the color, while not exactly the same as the necklace, tones it down and the differences are leveled out. What do you think?
Outfit #3: Perfect shirt in Ashbury floral, café capris in cerise and Nolita jacket
This one is probably my favorite pairing, even if it is a casual outfit. The colors just go so well together and it is such a fun outfit. My only reserve is that last year I wore this shirt non-stop in Miami and I have all the pictures in it. OK, I wore it with the festival green toothpicks and without the necklace, but still. In case you have the Jules in Ashbury floral, that would be awesome with this necklace and perfect for Valentine's Day if you are in warm weather (my pants are a tad small and probably a bit too heavy for Miami but I also have the Oxford shorts in cerise that would fit the bill):
And with the Nolita jacket in Great lakes Wash, a vacation favorite:
The only con that I can possibly find about the necklace is that it has a matte finish, like it hasn't been coated with a glossy (and protective) layer. Difficult to explain and its part of its uniqueness but the paint "could" chip easily and you have to handle it with care, probably (making sure for example that you don't throw it with other jewels). Also, when you move dometimes it makes a little noise like a mechanism that hasn't been oiled but I personally can live with it! Besides that, I really recommend it if you are on the fence.
And now, please vote for your favorite Valentine's Day outfit!

Outfit #1 - I love the necklace with the sequin tank! Reads most Miami and Valentines to me.
ReplyDelete:) Fun necklace!
Thanks Mack!
DeleteWow, I didn't think that necklace would be so versatile. What a great score, the persimmon sequin top, it's perfect with the necklace. For Valentine's Day my favorite is the outfit with the Heartthrob shirt. You are right about adding the papaya cardigan. It really pulls the look together.
ReplyDeleteThank you for confirming maryeb!
DeleteOh me too #1! I think the sequin tank is gorgeous on you, that is a perfect pairing for the necklace.
ReplyDeleteI like all of your outfits even if #1 is my favourite. Fun post Ema!
Thank you Dani! I knew you would choose #1 ;-)
DeleteOutfit #1 is my favorite,so beautiful and summery!
ReplyDeleteI was also thinking about the curator pants.
What size are you wearing?
TIA
Thank you ina! I am wearing a 00 in the curator pants. These are the old version from two years ago, I haven't tried the new one (even if I am a bit tempted by the new lime color). If you are interested in the black, size down (I had tried a 0 and they looked awful but I was a bit skinnier). They could be a little bit unforgiving in the other colors.
DeleteHi Ema,
ReplyDeleteInteresting pairings! Like you, I purchased the necklace (& the bracelet) full price bc I agree: it's a unique piece and worth it! I am so taken with the styling in the catalogue & mobile site where the model is wearing a bracelet on each wrist and a lavender cashmere tippi.
I think I love your first outfit best and totally vote for its Miami counterpart with white jeans. I also fantasize about wearing this necklace with a white lacy/crocheted boho dress. So holiday glam!
For some reason I don't like the bracelet as much as the necklace but I am not a bracelet person.
DeleteYes, it will definitely look great with ivory/white in the summer.
Ema, I love outfit # 1. It looks amazing! After seeing your pictures, I MUST have this necklace! Too bad it's already backordered online!
ReplyDeleteI ordered this one right away because I knew it would be popular, especially around Valentine's. However, it wasn't backordered this morning when I checked ...
DeleteEma, you're right--it must have been a mistake! I ordered it through my VPS! Thanks for the review.
DeleteHi Ema, I vote for outfit #1 - the sequin top and necklace look amazing on you, so bright and summery! Coral is the perfect colour for you to wear in Miami.
ReplyDeleteThank you Louise. I agree coral is a great color for me AND Miami ;-)
DeleteI like the simple, clean lines of #1 yet the punch of color brings it to another level. I can see you wearing it for dinner then dancing the night away in it (unlike the other two with their long sleeves).
ReplyDeleteThank you for chiming in Marie. I don't think I will dance the night away because my daughter (aged 5) is going to be with us and we are not planning to leave her with a babysitter. But I am definitely planning to go out for drinks and dinner (she is very well behaved), even if on the early side
Delete#1 for sure! How fabulous you look in them all, but #1 in Miami would be a wowzer!
ReplyDeleteWowzer, love it!
DeleteOutfit #1 is exquisite! One of your best ever IMO. I think it would also look beautiful paired with a plain black sheath dress.
ReplyDeleteThank you Shopping Celle.
DeleteI think that there could be too much contrast between a black background and the color of the necklace but I will try!
I love everything on you. For Miami I also vote for #1 as it's sexy with the white jeans. Thanks for showing us all the different looks. Are you shopping for a new swimsuit for the vacation?
ReplyDeleteOh boy, I must not buy another swimsuit (especially NOT a $200 Mara Hofmann) but I am a swimsuit/cover-up junkie so I am looking ;-). I bought a jersey Lomellina bikini on super-duper sale in December (like $20 for the set) but I think I will save it for spring break (we are going back to Dominican Republic) as it is a bit too revealing for Miami. I will bring for sure my fanfare print tank from last year, that's the perfect swimsuit for Miami.
DeleteMy favourite is #3. In #1, the necklace kind of disappears on the tank of similar colour. No. 2 is too predictible for V-day, IMO
ReplyDeleteThank you Rose. At least I had a vote for #3, it was my favorite ;-)
DeleteHaha! I knew it. :D
DeleteI think the colour combo is great in #3, and love it worn with the denim jacket.
I love outfit 1, and I think it would look great with dark denim or white, too. I also like the necklace with the denim jacket and blouse. That is smashing! I wonder how it would look if you wore it over a chambray blouse with the cerise capris. I understand your hesitation about repeating a vacation outfit. My Villa dress is in too many photos!
ReplyDeleteI van totally try the chambray blouse + cerise capris for the city, thanks for the suggestion.
DeleteYes, that's a bit excuse to shop for me!
Outfit #1! Super cute on you.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteSo many great options. This necklace kind of intimidated me, but you make it look great. I might have to try it on next time I get to the store.
ReplyDeleteI am late but I am voting for outfit #3! But all look good imo.
ReplyDeleteHow are you enjoying the beaded rose necklace now that you have had it for a while? I am on the wait list, and eager to hear some longer term reviews!
