Product review: Tweed-Front Tee

Quick post-review today of the Tweed-front tee. This is the tee that I pre-ordered after seeing it in the catalog. I love summer tweed and I love tees so this one called my name. Did I ever mention that I love navy? I am kidding, you KNOW that navy is a color I will never bore of. I ordered my regular XS, as I am very rarely a XXS in tees (more often in tanks).

So the tee arrived and while I like it I wasn't blown away. I find it a little ... boring? In any case the front panel is a light tweed made of a blend of cotton and silk that isn't scratchy at all (in case you are wondering the front panel isn't lined on the inside so you are wearing the tweed directly on your skin but really, it shouldn't bother anyone). The sleeves and back are cotton (I read somewhere that the sleeves are silk but no, it's a tee shirt cotton that isn't paper thin). It is a bit big in the body but it fits perfectly in the shoulders so I think that a XXS would be too small. I apologize for the styling, those are my sweat pants and they don't do the tee any favor. I am sure it will look much better with regular pants ;-).

When I saw it in the catalog it immediately reminded me of my terrazzo tweed jacket that as you know I have recently re-purchased after buying and returning in the summer. The tweed of the tee is sort of a reverse version of the tweed of the jacket as the jacket is white with navy speckles and the tee is navy with white speckles. I wondered how the two would look together and I think the tweeds blend harmoniously, thanks to the fringed neckline of the tee that picks up the chained fringe in the jacket:

As you can see the tee is short enough to be worn under a blazer without tucking it in. Here I am wearing it under my Theory blazer, which is pretty short:

But all in all I think that it is best worn wear simply with jeans and white pants (or even shorts). I am a bit torn because I think it is something that I could wear a lot but on the other side I don't think I really "need" it as I ha a lot of tees to wear casually and I am not sure it is special enough to make the cut in my (overcrowded) closet. I would keep it to wear with the terrazzo but I am not sure it is a good idea after all. Tweed overload?

What do YOU think?

  1. Ema, I love it. You should keep it, as it looks lovely on you. Can't believe how great it looks with the tweed jacket. It's now on my must-have list. Can totally see it with white jeans and some cute sandals.

  2. I kind of agree with you, Ema. Don't love it. It's cute on you but it's just sort of an eh design. And if you don't love it either, I say return it and get something you do love!

  3. Well I won't help you spend your hard earned money, but I do think it looks sharp on you, looks great with the blazers and could be very elegant for spring and summer. But then, you know I always think you look great in everything!

  4. This is the only item which caught my eye in the catalog & I can cross it off my list now. From the online reviews that are trickling in, it's just blah for its price. I think the boxiness & the short sleeves don't really do much for the figure. One thing that did wow me was your post on the Collection Beaded Mockneck Sweater. Sorry I was not able to comment then but you looked fantastic! I had to order (Jcrew should thank you) & it's on its way to me. I love the beaded, vintagey look of it & I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it would look as great on me as it did on you.

  5. I don't care for it on you . Too boxy and I usually love everything on you. Thanks for the review Emma.

  6. I actually really like it with the Terazzo jacket but other than that I am with you, not really wowed and this was one of the very few items that caught my attention. I wish it had more shape to it but it looks like it has the same shape as the silk and velvet tees, all of them boxy and short.

  7. I was also very drawn to this top. I would like to see the pink colorway since this seems too close in style to the navy tweed tieback top. I'm ashamed to say I bought the navy tweed top, jacket, skirt and capri all of which I am looking toward to wearing this spring. I think that group reads more spring than fall to me. I wish this top was a little more tapered or longer but I think it's a keeper. It looks fab on you paired with the terrazzo jacket!

  8. Hi Ema, I have to admit, I am not really wowed by this top. It's just okay, but nothing special. You have other items in your closet that are much more striking. Thanks for the review!

  9. I think it is very chic on you, and I don't mind the boxiness of it. I actually wonder if it wouldn't look better even a little shorter. I picture the shirt with jeans or white denim and long pearls- Chanel -like casual. Oh, and big sunglasses. It does harmonize nicely with the tweed jacket.

  10. Ema, from the dental chair (thanks for the distraction!) I like it with the Terrazzo jacket, I think it is smashing, actually, but otherwise no. But really, it's brillant with the jacket, I love it!

  11. Definitely not a tweed overload! I think you were right it matches seemlessly. It is a very flattering top!

  12. I really like it with the terrazzo, but otherwise I think it's nothing to write home about.

Do you want/need something to wear nearly exclusively with that jacket? It doesn't seem to entirely merit the closet space, in my opinion.
