This past weekend we took our daughter (and MIL) to the MoMa as we had a family pass that was about to expire and gave free entrance to up to 5 family members. While to be admitted in any of the museums of the city of New York a donation of as low as $1 is enough (even if the price displayed says $20 or whatever, it is a SUGGESTED admission price) the MoMa is a privately owned museum so you have to pay the full ticket, which is $25 for adults, or be a member. I used to have a membership and go all the time when I was working and living in Midtown but I must admit that I hadn't been in a long time (something like 3 years). In any case there is currently an installation that I had read about in the newspaper and I wanted to see, also because it seemed something fun to do with our daughter. It is called "The rain room" and as the press release says "consists of a field of falling water that visitors may walk through and experience how it might feel to control the rain (...) Using digital technology, Rain Room is a carefully choreographed downpour, a monumental work that encourages people to become performers on an unexpected stage". Basically you enter this field that produces a downpour of rain but is provided with sensors that detect human presence so that the rain stops whenever you walk creating an empty space around you, while you are surrounded by rain (a little bit like you were actually carrying an umbrella). Sounds like fun, right?
Well we arrived there around 11 am and we were told that the line to enter the rain room was 6 to 7 hours long. What? Honestly, I have never heard of a 7 hour long line, even at the Hermes sample sale in Paris. Obviously we weren't going to wait for 7 hours but we went outside anyway to have a look (the installation is held in the lot next to the museum, where they usually have this kind of exhibits) and we were told the same thing but also that there was a "view only" line that was only 20 minutes long. View only means that you can go in and see what it is but you don't get to "play" with the installation. Fine with me (less fine with my daughter but she understands rules)!
So in this picture we are inside the rain room (but on the external perimeter as you can see), except that they let too many people in at the same time so that it is barely raining:
I was wearing a new dress by Calypso. As you know I love Calypso but I usually wait for their sales to buy from them because 1) prices are overblown in general and 2) everything or almost goes on sale sooner or later and their styles don't go out of style so even if you don't buy in season you can be sure that it is something that you will wear. In fact this dress is at least two years old if I am not wrong and was retailing during the last round of their sample sale last week for a crazy $19.50 (down from $225). It is linen lined in cotton (the perfect summer dress) and it was a popback, meaning that it isn't something that they have usually in the sale section (or at the Soho outlet) but popbacks during the "sample sale". It is called "Mombai hills dress" and also comes in another colorway but besides the fact the the other color was sold-out, I prefer this neutral given the print (desert "hills" that from afar look like a camo effect). I am wearing a XS, which is my regular Calypso size. Here are a few more pictures where you can see the dress in all its glory:
Another dress that was part of their sample sale and I have (and it is actually in the sale section of the website but for a little bit more than it was three days ago) is this Ava dress. I had actually bought it a while ago to wear on my defunct trip to Jordan (as I was looking for something that would cover me up a little bit more than usual) and it is composed of a silk slip and a overlay of silk chiffon (Calypso offerings are almost always lined in silk). Again, it is now quite cheap and the silk slip is luxurious:
I don't think I am going to take this one to Greece as I am going to be more casually dressed and for the heat. I was actually thinking of getting this one, that I tried last week at the Marche boutique (the outlet) and being cotton travels more easily than silk:
What do you think? Too pajam-y? I didn't buy it that day because I found something else for the same price ($59) that was a much better deal and made my rock chic persona extremely happy (I will show it to you in another post).
On Sunday we had brunch all together and then in the late afternoon husband and I went to a movie. We went to see The Attack, that I personally think is a great "engaged" movie in the ocean of inane summer blockbusters but, I should probably mention, a movie that takes a pro-Palestinian side on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict (the movie is co-produced by France and as you probably know the position of the French government and the European countries in general is much more pro-Palestinian than the US official position). In any case, even if you don't share the same view about the conflict (it isn't a Manichean movie anyway, in fact it is pretty complex) but you are a curious movie-goer who likes to see movies that make you think, I really recommend it.
I had exactly 5 minutes to get ready (are all the husbands like this or only mine?) so I basically grabbed what was laying around, which was not worth taking a picture of!
In other news it is officially my birthday week. My birthday is next Saturday but because nobody is around during the 4th of July weekend (including myself, even if technically I am coming back that day) I am going out with girlfriends to celebrate tonight. This year I offered myself a cheap treat as my bday present, since I have been spending a lot as of late, a new maxi by H&M that I have been eyeing and really didn't need except as bday treat. It's a very dramatic, full floor-length leopard (cheeta, actually) print dress, very appropriate to have a copious dinner our with my girlfriends in one of the best Italian restaurants in the neighborhood (BTW, it is Italian restaurant week and many Italian restaurant are offering a $40 menu for dinner). It looks much more expensive than its $24.50, especially with my resin necklace:
We are going to our Hamptons residence for 4th of July. I will try to post a few of the outfits that I am going to pack and wish you all a great 4th of July!
Have you heard about or been to the Rain room? Have you seen The attack? Have you been shopping the Calypso sample sale?

Hi Ema - I have been intrigued by the rain installation, bot NOTHING is worth a 7 hour wait for me!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE those calypso dresses - you look so elegant! could you wear the first dress with your new shoes? The third dress does kind of look like a nightie to me - that's what I thought it was at first, but if anyone can pull off the wear your PJs outside look, it is you (and Tiffany Rose!) I love the leopard print as well - so lovely! I must go see if calypso now ships to canada - i do love their clothes! Have fun in the Hamptons! Didn't realize you had a place out there, too - is it a little house or cottage? Happy July 4th!
Wow, a 7 hour wait! That's crazy, but it looks like fun. At least you go to see it from the perimeter.
ReplyDeleteI think you are right, the white Calypso dress is bit PJ-like. You look stunning in the desert hills dress and the navy silk dress - so envious of your figure! Looking forward to seeing what you got instead!
That line is insanity. I wouldn't do it either. You look great in your early birthday dinner dress. I hope it's a great one when it arrives! The Calypso pieces are nice. They definitely look timeless.
ReplyDeleteEma, you and your daughter look lovely in that happy snap. And I really like the Calypso dress although not normally a fan of things that read "camo." I am with others who think the cotton dress is a bit nightie, in a not casual sexy but granny/ Victorian way. Trust it was a wonderful birthday and a very happy 4th - party on...
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday! I think the heavy resin necklace looks great with the cat print- rowrrr!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Ema!!! I love the Calypso dresses, especially the first one and the cheetah one, so you! No way I would stand on that line, that's crazy, for sure I would be disappointed after waiting so long. I so it on a Cup of Jo some time ago and I thought it would be cool but no, thanks. Smart choice to view only, you and your daughter look so cute, mine makes the same faces for the pictures, so funny :)
