JC "New Arrivals": The Rumpled Terry French Cardigan aka the "Grandpa Cardi"

As you probably know, today the JCrew website was updated with the latest new arrivals. One of the "new" items in today's rollout is the Rumpled Terry French Cardigan (item 13658). It is new online but it hit the stores a while ago; I bought it at the beginning of February and the color pictured above (weathered stone) is already in the sale section.

I bought it in white ($59.50) because I needed something like this for spring and white is always one of the first colors to sell out. Plus, I thought that it was fairly priced. However, since the price recently dropped to $49.50 (it's a promo but I don't think it will ever go back to $59.50) and my size wasn't sold out yet I bought it again and returned the first one.
Now, the funny story. You know the little sign that they hang when they have a promo on one particular item? Well, the sign read "The Grandpa Cardi, now at $49.50". The grandpa cardi???? Honestly, I don't know who at JCrew thought that calling a style "Grandpa" was a good selling point. I almost returned mine (without re-buying) and I can't shake the stereotype image of an old man with a pipe when I try it on. Anyway, someone must have told the marketing guy, because the term didn't make it to the website...

So, if you can get over the idea of wearing something that your grandpa would wear, it's a nice weekend cardigan (even if the detail of the shawl gives it a "twist" as they love to say on the website - to the point that everything these days looks pretty much twisted - it remains a very casual item). I like it best with relaxed jeans and opened:

As you can see, on me it doesn't hit at hips as the description says, but at mid-thigh. When it's closed it's a little bit shapeless, and I think is best worn with a belt:

In my opinion, it's a good buy. Do you own this cardi? Are you considering buying it? What do you think of the price ($59.50)?

  1. It looks so lovely on you (both belted and unbelted). For me, I cannot shake the feeling that it would overwhelm my petite frame. BTW, your English is impeccable. I lived a few years in Italy, and am ashamed to say my Italian is not very good now.

  2. Oh, but you're tall and model-esque, everything will look good on you! This is as good as looking at items in JCrew catalogs ;)

I found your blog through JCA, thanks for posting IRL pictures!!! (I'm pretty sure a lot of us appreciate those the most)

I really liked the cardigan first time I saw it, now I'm 99% sure I'll buy it, just have to think about the right color for me. Could you please let me know if it's hand-wash only?

  3. I love your blog!!! Your shape is perfect and the way you put outfits together is wonderful!! Would love to see more items (maybe even some of the slub-t's.

    Thanks so much

  4. Susan, thank you for the compliment on my English, you are too kind but it encourages me to keep up with the blog (sometimes I struggle to find my words and I'm just "oh forget it, what do I think I'm doing?").

SanFranciscoCa, thank you but I'm not model-esque at all ;-). I'm 5 feet 3", on the edge of being considered petite. But it's true that I have a proportioned figure and it helps.
The Cardi is "machine wash cold gentle cycle" and it doesn't look like something that you would hand-wash. Hope it helps.
J, thank you! Unlike Gigi, I only try on and talk about stuff that I buy or (in case of the pics in the fitting room) would buy for me. The slub T's run too big for me this year, that's why I haven't posted any review. But I'm headed to a store later today, I will look at the new arrivals and see if therte is any that could fit.
    Keep reading, I really appreciate!

  5. Love this on you - especially with the belt. Way cute!! I tried this one in store, but it just wasn't great on me - whereas I loved the library cardi (which I did get).

I think you are going to wear the daylights out of that - so enjoy it!!

  6. You look so much taller than 5'3"! Belts do nothing for me, but based on your pic I an inspired to secretly try it at home.

The white is so white and I love it. I got 3 colors. It feels so great like a hug from grandpa, but I don't get visions of old men & pipes. Perhaps because I saw the 1st marketing blurb which was "rumpled terry cardi." I also agree that it's great at $59.50, but of course a lower price is better.

I am really in love with this and noticed that it doesn't stretch out when I'm wearing it.

  8. Gigi, I too love that the white is really white. Good to know that it doesn't stretch out.

Ina, I haven't tried the library cardigan because I already have the Michelle merino cardi in putty and I didn't like the other color option (light pewter). I don't understand why they didn't make it in other colors (navy would have been great). However, I can say that this one cannot be dressed up in any way, it's really a weekend cardi, while the library looks less casual (is also heavier).

BTW, when I say "figure" I mean frame ;-)
