Let's start with the Trentino Cabin cardigan in heather camel. It's very soft and cuddly but definitively too long and big on me, especially buttoned up:

Much better on me (and I would say on petites in general), the Donegal shawl cardigan in heather rosewood:

It felt great on and I considered buying it but at $148 ($160 with the tax) I censured myself, also because I have found something else that I loved for almost half the price (see later).
I also picked up the mohair souffle cardigan because they had it the spice olive (color currently sold-out online) in my size. I have ordered this cardi last week in heather silver to pair with the beaded front-ribbon top even if I'm not sure that it's going to work (in fact at this point I'm pretty sure that is not going to work). It is very sheer and not a cardigan to layer over tees because you can clearly see the tee sleeve through:

It looks definitively longer on me than on Gigi who tried it in this post.
Now, the one that I really liked and not only bought but wore right out of the store (the SA cut the tag for me, that's really liking something)! It's the Dream varsity stripe cardigan. This felt like a big hug, so soft, and very fitted. I didn't know that it was in the "dream" yarn until I looked it up on the Internet. I don't think that I have any other "dream" sweater, excepted for the funnelneck cardi so I was pleasantly surprised (now, I can't vauche on the other dream sweaters because the funnelneck and this one have a very different feeling at the touch).
I can clearly see it dressed up with a belt and some jewelry or dressed down with jeans and a tee. It totally fits my lifestyle, so it came home with me (or, should I say, on me?) I picked the heather carbon black but I saw that the lighter color was selling well in other Jcrew stores and it would look lovely with the Imperial tee (I might get the other one too):

Later in the day at the Rockfeller Center store I tried a few other styles.
First the Merino ethereal ruffle V-neck sweater. I wasn't really interested in this one for me but picked it up because of this color (deep aubergine) that will enthousiasm many of you (I don't see it online, must be in-store only). I have tried both the XS and S. If you want to wear it alone go with your size, otherwise size u in this one as the sleeves are very snug:

The S is longer and there is room for a shirt underneath:

It's really a beautiful sweater, I really reccomend it if you think you're going to wear it.
Next, the much talked-about Fifi cardigan. I'm not sure why people are raving about this cardigan exactly but it was selling out fast. The Rockfeller Center store hadn't any XS or S left and they called the Madison Avenue (Midtwon) store to put one on hold for me. Personally I don't need a cardigan like this one at FP ($118) because I have a black one from some holiday seasons ago that I can wear the same way (actually it's more similar to the Merino ethereal ruffle cardigan because it has the same chiffon ruffle along the placket). Also, you don't need it if you have a black Lea IMO because the ruffles don't add that much to the style. The XS was very short and fitted but it's supposed to be like this I think (it doesn't help that I'm wearing dark charcoal pants, I know):

I was a little bit "meh". However, I would pick it up a hundreth times over the "peekaboo" one, currently offered at the promo price of $102.40. I was really interested in this one because it appears to be the only cardigan that comes in antique stone, which is the color of the beaded front-ribbon top. Double "meh" on this one. Seriously not worth the money, it felt very flimsy ((it's in pima cotton) and anyway it wouldn't have worked with the beaded top because of the sequins:

The only new printed cardigan is, I believe, the deco cardi, in the same pattern than the skirt. Thi one is offered in-store only for the time being and I can't remember the price ($88 maybe?)However, this patter works better on a bottom than on a top, IMO as it's a little bit overwhelming close to the face. Plus, the main color is champagne and not ivory white like the skirt. I tried a S, which was on the roomy side:

Are you feeling a little bit tired? Hang in there, we're almost done!
The last one is the Collegiate cardigan. Very cute and TTS, if you need something like this:

The wool felt like boiled wool, a little bit scratchy-itchy even if the description doesn't say so.
I will end this post with an anedctocte. While I was waiting in line for the fitting room at the Rockfeller Store, a young, hipster SA told me quite out of the blue "Tory Burch was in our store two weeks ago" (maybe it was because I was wearing my reva, which means that he is surely gay, right?) It was cute, he was very proud. So I asked "What did she get?". Answer: "Lot of cashmere". So ladies, if Tory Burch buys her cashmere at Jcrew, it can't be so bad, right?
As always, I will be happy to answer your questions if I can!
Thank-you for posting so a great review on the sweaters! The Varsity cardigan I have been looking at it on-line since it came out, do you need to size up on this one since it is very fitted? also I love the Donegal cardigan on you it was adorable. Was it itchy?
ReplyDeleteI ordered the sequin peekaboo and sent it back too. Too thin and the buttons ruin the look of the 'peekaboo' sequins, in my opinion. I like the same sweaters you do and am not dying for anything really. Thanks for taking the time to post pictures and reviews. They're so helpful! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the awesome reviews! So helpful! I love your detailed descriptions of the fabrics. You are doing many of us Big Favours!
ReplyDeleteNow I know that I will not be ordering any mohair. Wow, it was really thin wasn't it? So you saved me return shipping right there!
Love the sweater you bought. Do you think they turned down the thermostat so women would buy sweaters? hehe
Love the Tory Burch story. I guess she's just as fab as JCA's;)
I think the "peekaboo" cardi is cute. . but the price! For a cotton sweater! No thanks.
ReplyDeleteThank you for taking the time to do pics and reviews!!
Thanks for the reviews... this time of year is frusterating for me because I am really allergic to merino. That elimanates 3/4 of J Crew fall and winter sweaters!
ReplyDeleteoh, you saved me some money with today. i wanted the peekaboo cardigan, but after seeing it IRL and from what you have written, it's a no go for me. Thanks for the reviews.
ReplyDeleteWas so excited, to see this post!! Yay!! Thank you so much, for your descriptive reviews. I never even gave the varsity stripe cardigan, the one you loved, a second thought! Until now! I love it! I love the heather carbon color, it looks fantastic on you, and I think I may need it, too. Wanted to love the Trentino Cabin cardigan........but was not impressed when I saw it in the store, and it sounds like you weren't either. Oh well. Love this post!!!!
ReplyDeleteI bought the Trentino cardigan last week. I really love it but I'm 5'8, I could see how it could be overwhelming on a petite person. That was really the only sweater that I really wanted - everything else is just meh. I really hope the next rollout is better.
ReplyDeletecasual-crew, thank you! I wouldn't size up in the varsity cardigan, it's TTS. What I mean is that when you see it on the table, it looks a little like a grampa cardi, but it's "surprisingly" quite fitted. Sorry if it was confusing. The Donegal is very soft, I didn't have an itchy feeling at all (and I tried it on a short-sleeved tee). It really is adorable but a tad expensive for a cardi!
ReplyDeleteIRL, thank you. Yes the peekaboo is really thin, I can't believe that they sell it for $128! I would have returned it as well.
DaniBP, happy to help! Yes the mohair is really thin and I didn't even tried the lighter colors that are even more sheer.
Yes, that's what I thought at the beginning, but they didn't have cashmere turtlenecks lol!
Tory Burch is fabulous and now that I know that she is a JCA she ranks even higher in my list of favorite designers.
stacie, thanks. If you like the pekaboo, I think you'll easily find it in the FS section in not too long ...
hkm, too bad that you're allergic to merino. Their merino sweaters are the best.
Patina, thanks. I wouldn't bother with the peekaboo if I had the crystal constellation one. So jalous!
mrs.anketell, thank you. I think you would like the varsity, give it a try the next time.
Summerilla, I can see how the Trentino cardigan could look good on you. Share pics when you get to wear it (I don't think it's going to be anytime soon though).
Ema, thank you so much for the photos and reviews. Much appreciated.
ReplyDeleteAwesome, awesome post and pics! Very helpful, thank you!
ReplyDeleteHard to believe Tory is at JC buying cashmere-don't cha' think she can find some nice cashmere somewhere..oh like maybe where she works! ;)
Thank you for the reviews. I didn't like the Donegal shawl cardigan until i saw it on you. It's very becoming.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your perspective printed Deco cardigan. I immediately liked it when i tried it on, but can see how one could find it overwhelming around the face. I'll probably pair mine with some simple black pants or wear it under a black suit. I like the print a lot, but unfortunately, the skirt didn't work out for me.
How did the Dream Varsity sweater fit? If it's very fitted - should I go up a size? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteOops! I just read the other comments - and my question was answered already! Thanks for trying all of these sweaters on - it's really helpful!!
ReplyDeleteThe deco sweater *is* overwhelming around the face. I'm not sorry I missed it. I like the peekaboo cardi, but not for the price. I agree w/your assessment. I tried the Fifi, too. I forgot to take a pic of it...that's how excited I was about it. Not. *lol*
ReplyDeletexoxo, thanks!
ReplyDeletebug pin, thanks. I don't think he made up the Tory Burch story, but yes, why would she buy cashmere at Jcrew instead of wearing her cashmere? Oh well, maybe she like this year's colors...
Cleo26, thanks. The deco cardi could work for someone else, especially someone tall. I have to say that I'm not a fan of printed sweaters (especially "optical" prints) in general, I prefer solid colors.
gigi, I wouldn't bother with the peekaboo even on sale and glad that you agree with me.
WOW!! Thanks for sharing all of these reviews and pictures w/ us! They're extremely helpful! ;)
ReplyDeleteThe mohair ones just look too itchy (& thin) for me!?! I am lovin' the colors though! I may try one if they make it to FS!?! :)
Ha, ha--I don't doubt him, I also just have a hard time believing she's buying THEIR cashmere! I guess she will learn like the rest of us that the colors and styles just won't cut it when the things are all balled up after the first wear! She prob bought them so she could mock up some of the cute colors and styles for her own line;) he he
ReplyDeleteHi Ema,
ReplyDeleteHow does the Fifi cardigan fit? Sometimes I'm a medium and sometimes I'm a small(ocelot cardi-med, maya cardi-small). I would like to order one, but I'm not sure which size to go with. Help! Thanks Ema.
With the exception of the first cardi, everything looked great on you! The cadet is similar in styling but fits better I think. The Donegal was my favorite. Thanks for posting these pictures - they're very helpful. Oh, and love the skirt on you! :)
ReplyDeleteMMM, thank you. I will post pics of the heather silver mohair cardi with the beaded front-ribbon bow when I receive it. I'm on the fence on this one, I didn't dislike it completely and at least it's less itchy than boiled wool lol.
ReplyDeleteBug pin, that was probably it ;-)
Julie, I'm between sizes too in cardigans, I always go with a small in crewneck cardis like Jackie and the alike but I'm an XS in the V-necks. I have tried only the XS and it was VERY FITTED, but I'm afraid that sizing up would ruin a little bit the style of the cardi. Also, I don't know if sizing up really does in this one because the buttons start very low
(and in my case I usually size up to avoid the gaping at the button holes in the chest). Hope it helps!
A Bigger Closet, thank you!The Donegal was also my favorite, along with the varsity stripe. The Trentino would look nice on you.
like the donegal shawl cardi...I could really use that!
ReplyDeleteGreat reviews!
ReplyDeleteI didn't get what the fuss about the Fifi sweater was, either!
Love the varsity stripe sweater!!!
My love for J Crew cardigans is the best part of Fall!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the fab reviews! Love the Trentino cardi - but with my height, it would probably work. Similary, that Donegal tweed cardi is adorable on you, but I bet it would be too short on me.
ReplyDeletethanks for sharing...must go back and try on that Trentino! And you have saved me some serious time now that I know what to NOT take into the dressing room. :)
