So this is the first of a series of posts where I ask you to help me with a fashion-relate dilemma. In this case the dilemma is what to wear with a sweet guava top.
Some time ago I had the chance to come across a Harlow blouse in sweet guava in my size and for a decent price on the JCA Weekly Exchange. I already own the ivory version (see this post) and I regretted not getting also the sweet guava one (and/or the honey glaze one) because I absolutely LOVE this blouse, it's so feminine and classic and it will never go out of style (I can picture myself wearing this when I'm 80). So I got it and I was very excited about adding it to my closet.
However as much as I love the color per se, I find particularly challenging to find a cardigan to pair with it. I think that the blouse is mean to be worn alone in the first place but it's freezing here and I would like to wear it before spring, if not right now (it is REALLY freezing and there is nothing that could convince me to wear something different from a cashmere sweater these days).
Anyway, I have tried it with different cardigans that I already have and I'm not very happy, so I hope that you have some great ideas for me. While I was trying to find a cardigan to pair with it, I have realized that my winter color palette, and in particular my cardigans' color palette, is neutral bordering boring: besides a bright papaya cashmere V-neck cardigan from last year and the pinkish Michelle that I bought at the sample sale, everything is beige or black/charcoal or navy. There isn't a single splash of color, so I wouldn't mind taking advantage of the current great sale prices to buy a cardigan or two in a bright color.
But because maybe you don't remember the blouse, I wanted to show you a picture of it worn alone first. The jeans that I'm wearing in the pics are not the best style for this blouse but I was focused on the top half of my outfit, so please don't let the jeans distract you.

A similar style (plus the ruffly placket) from the current fall/winter collection, is the Solid Loulou blouse, that also comes in sweet guava, so if you have this one and you have found what to wear it with, I would like to hear it!
The first pairing that I have tried is the most obvious one, a black or navy cardigan. I picked up the navy Portland because it was longer than my black cardigans:

That's a safe choice (I think that nobody will point at me and say that I have a weird color taste if I go out wearing this); however I also think there is too much contrast between the sweet guava and a dark color like navy.
So I tried a heather grey, which on the opposite, is a little bit too fade for sweet guava (please mentally substitute this cardigan, which is old and too short, with something like the mohair souffle one):

I think that in the lighter palette a snow would work better, but snow is typically a color that washes me out (the last time that I have tried something in snow, the SA said that I could do better and said by a SA it sounds like a granitic truth).
Now for the unexpected pairings, I tried it with my cotton-cashmere waterfall cardigan in spice olive from this spring:

Unexpected it surely is, but is it also nice? I can't tell, what do you think?
And finally the following is the best I could come up with. You could call it an orgy of pastels but I kind of like them together, it's very delicate and it "respects" the spirit of the blouse. I'm talking of my croquet cardigan in amethyst from last spring. Did I tell you that I love this cardigan?

I think that this is how I'm going to wear it until I find another option. The bonus is that the cashmere in this cardigan is much thicker than any cashmere sweater that I have seen this fall/winter season (I'm still wondering why this cardi was part of the spring collection), so at least I'm going to be warm.
An option that I have been considering is buying a sweet guava cardigan for a total guava look. But because the bling cardigan (that comes in guava) I had put my hopes in is so flimsy, I am left with a cashmere crewneck and I don't know if I want to spend money in a cashmere in this color.
Do you have a blouse or cami in sweet guava? What do you pair it with? Do you have any color pairing suggestion? Which one of the options that I have showed you do you like the best?
Please share!
I love that blouse and I wish I OWNED it. This sweet guava color is so pretty, and very flattering. I have a cashmere turtleneck (Fall '09) in this color. I bought it to wear with the pencil skirt in "papaya", (it is the one MrsO wore in Vogue back in the spring). It is a go-to outfit for me now, as it is so warm, and very "dressy" looking, but still comfortable.
ReplyDeleteI would try the blouse with a "cocoa" cardigan, or with a cardigan in the same color, but I also really like it with your gorgeous "croquet" cardigan. The pastels are wonderful together. The sweet guava looks nice with shades of champagne as well. Weirdly, JCrew did NOT come out with enough great neutrals in their cashmere cardi's this winter. The pale nectar is very yellow, and would not look quite right with the sweet guava.
Sorry for the long post, further evidence of the excess crewlade I have been drinking this year!
I'll be interested to read what other JCA's have to say!
my suggestions: a mid-toned brown like acorn or hazelnut (like this); mustard (like this); or pumpkin/cinnamon (like this).
ReplyDeletehmm... second link was supposed to be of a jackie cardi in honey glaze. I am sure you know what color I am talking about. :) I agree w/ danibp, for a lighter color option, champagne or antique stone could work.
ReplyDeletehi ema, i dont have anything in sweet guava, but have the same problem with my melon portland cardi from last year.
ReplyDeletei have hardly worn it, because i cant find the perfect color to wear underneath.
i think the antique stone color would look nice with the guava color.
Hi Ema!!
ReplyDeleteI own a lot of clothes in the sweet guava (Maya merino cardi, cashmere v neck). I wear white, black, dark gray, and navy with my sweet guava. I looove your gorgeous croquet cardigan though and I think it looks fab together.
Glad you had a great holiday!!
I have the blouse, and, yes, it's a bit hard to match.
ReplyDeleteBut.
the black looks great. I've worn it with a black cardigan (portland) and grey pants.
You also tried another combination I like, which is the green sweater. Try white pants, too.
I adore your croquet cardigan. At least from the picture, it looks great, though I know the guava doesn't photograph very accurately!
I have this top in the honey glaze and am having a similar issue, maybe I will do a "help me" post over at my blog. GREAT IDEA!
ReplyDeleteI also own the henley tunic in silk in this sweet guava color. I think many shades of green/yellow work very nicely with this color. Something about the green and yellow with the guava make for fruit or floral looks, and that is never a bad thing. In nature, fruits and florals are SO pretty and on you, the same is true, which is why the spicy olive is the best.
But yes, khaki, navy, and brown look really nice, as well. :)
For tone on tone, try one of the really pale pink/blush colors like pale blossom. You could go with a darker olive like jalapeno or a pale tiffany-blue like bright seaside (these are winter 09 cashmere colors). I have a papaya shirt that I wear with a bright yellow cardigan when I'm feeling particularly vibrant!
ReplyDeletei really like the olive and purple cardis with the blouse. a warm brown could be cute also.
ReplyDeleteGreat question!
ReplyDeleteMy suggestion might be a darker heather gray (Heather Graphite) or even a slate, that might have some blue tones to balance the orange.
The top looks fab on you!
first, I would say, you might could still wear a snow colored cardi, since it wont be next to your face. second, my fave is the spicy olive. also, I really like jcrew's rhubarb color with this(have a tartine in this color). its a little bit deeper pink and I really like the tonal effect. good luck!
ReplyDeleteI like the olive cardigan with that. If it were me, I'd be trying to find a shade of green (like the olive) or maybe a light pink? that works with it.
ReplyDeleteI agree to go w/a cocoa color, something warm. To be honest I'm not a fan of the green. Maybe with a different bottom than jeans...don't you have some J Crew printed capris that might work? The trick to this blouse is to wear jewelry with it. Long layering necklaces, even one, makes a world of difference.
ReplyDeleteAgree with several here that searching JC for cardis in hues like pale nectar, salmon, cinnamon spice, glazed pecan, fawn, heather charcoal could be good tries if you want to add something new Ema. And second Gigi on the necklace(s) to "brighten." Although not as extreme as JC's styling, of course ;-) Also, for any of you who tend to get in a clothes/ decor colour rut like me, there are some great wedding and art blogs and sites you can use for general wardrobe and decorcolour palette ideas, like theperfectpalette.blogspot.com and stylemepretty.com Most have an option where you can select a colour and find different combos that coordinate.
ReplyDeleteFunny..I haven't read all the comments so I hope I am not repetitive but I think guava is hard to wear in winter. I am not opposed to color in winter AT ALL but I bought the guava cashmere cardi to wear with the antique stone, beaded ribbon front top (that you also have)as shown in the catalog (with light jeans). I love guava with this top so I suggest "antique stone" (isn't your zara cardigan this color?) but otherwise it seems dark colors (like the navy, black, charcoal) feel so wintery. Read..TOO DARK. So, that is the same dilemma I have..with opposite issues. I am now going back to read what people say so maybe I can learn how to wear the guava cardi over those same colors-lol!
ReplyDeleteAnother thought..and I am going completely by memory so I could have this all wrong but last Fall they had a gorgeous and unexpected combo that included the the ochre colored double serge pencil skirt with this blouse and I believe a shade like this Fall's light berry. hey did a lot of plum, bright rhubarb, heather wheat, blush, heather silver, royal violet, carrot.
ReplyDeleteI am just drawn to either intense, unexpected tones or soft shades with guava. But overall..feel like I am struggling to feel it is a winter color sweater.
I love the sweet guava color. I usually wear mine with a light brown cardigan, I love the way it balances. I have the maya cardigan in sweet guava, I never thought of going tone on tone...I may have to experiment with that.
ReplyDeletep.s. I LOVE the croquet cardigan, wish I had picked one of those beauties up!
I love this blouse too. And I also found it doesn't go well with cardis, any cardi really. Cardis just hide the chic back buttons and overall nice tailoring of the Harlow. I think a slightly structured jacket like the Astrid or a soft blazer is much better over it than a knitted and fitted cardi. I mostly wear the Harlow with dark indigo or grey or white pants or jeans, and for winter with an elbow sleeve scoopneck tee the color of the pants underneath.
ReplyDeleteFrom my wardrobe, the best colors to go with "sweet guava" are mid- and dark greys and JC's "desert brown".
Thank you for writing such a fine blog; happy 2010!
