If you remember, in my Back from Rehab post I had told you that I had come up with a solution for my Jcrew addiction but then I kind of dropped the subject. The fact is that I wanted to test it over the crazy "Thanksgiving Sale" weekend before talking about it, just in case that it turned out to be a total failure. But the good news is that it passed the test, so I'm going to share it with you and hopefully it will help some of you in the same situation.
First of all, I am not going on a shopping ban. I am one of those persons who have to set realistic goals to have a small chance to get some results. I have never been able to implement a shopping ban for more than a month and that was a very extreme situation in my life. I really admire those who can say "Starting from tomorrow I will stop shopping for a year" but I know myself and I just can't do it. My husband is for the hard way and and always makes promise that I won't shop EVER again under various threatens that span from blocking the access to my favorite sites on the computer (threaten that he has already carried on at the beginning of this year with some success, until I found a way to disable ANY "parental control" password that he could possibly come up with. BTW, if I can do it, your teenager on or daughter can too); cancelling my American Express from the account and giving me pocket money every morning like if I were 10; sending me BACK TO WORK (his words); etc. etc.
What he doesn't understand is that the solution must come from within. It's like someone who is forced to go to rehab, it doesn't work long term.
The second thing that you have to know before you read below is that my shopping addiction is almost 100% an addiction to Jcrew. It happens that I shop elsewhere occasionally, but not addictively and in general I can let go of things or think before buying at other retailers. For more than a year I have been logging into Gilt.com or ideeli.com without ever buying anything and there are often better deals than you can find on Jcrew. But when it comes to Jcrew I loose my control, especially when it comes to sales, promotions and popbacks. So my solution is a cure for my Jcrew addiction and not a general shopping addiction.
I don't know if it's the case for many of you or not but my major issue is that I don't have a budget for my clothing expenses and it is very easy to go overboard when is someone else who is paying the bill. Even if I set myself a budget, write it down, create an Excel sheet and log all my expenses, my credit card doesn't know any of this and cannot stop me from saying "just this one time" when I'm about to make an unbudgeted purchase, which generally leads to many unbudgeted purchases.
Now, I don't know why I didn't think earlier of this (especially when I was trying to find a way to hide my Internet purchases from my husband) but a card that has only a preset amount of money that you can spend exists and it's called a gift card. The Internet shopping experience is pretty new to me (I used to buy everything in store until my daughter was born) and it never came to my mind until very recently that a gift card (which is the same thing that a store credit) could be used for Internet purchases.
So what I did a couple of weeks ago, when I "came back from rehab", is that I returned a bunch of stuff still unworn and/or that I had bought on an impulse and instead of getting the money back I put everything on a Jcrew gift card. Then I deleted my credit card information from the website and voila! My new self-imposed budget magically come true. Easy! I would even go and say genius!
Now I can test the real value of the things that I want to buy against this pre-fixed budget and when I see something go on sale and I'm tempted by it, I ask myself "Are you sure that this is really what you want? Because if you buy this now, you won't be able to buy anything else or (depending on what's the current amount on the gift card) you won't have enough funds to buy that dress that you have been coveting for a very long time". And I can tell you that this changes everything. It's illuminating.
So here are my new shopping rules:
1) I can buy whatever I want if I can pay for it in it's totality with my gift card. If the price exceeds the current amount on the gift card by only one dollar, I have to make choices or wait. Taking "advances" (ie, run out and "recharge" the gift card to be able to make a purchase) is not allowed.
2) If I return something, I can use that amount returned towards another purchase. This makes the whole "one in, one out" strategy a lot more concrete and realistic because I actually have to wait until I have made the return to be able to buy something else, as the gift card amount is not "unlimited", unlike a credit card. I can also "recharge" my gift card with the money that I get back from returning purchases made by cash, also at other retailers.
3) In-store purchases (= extra gift card) are allowed from time to time.
4) I can put a maximum of $25 cash per week on the gift card to "recharge" it (I won't explain why, but $25 is the amount that I'm allowing myself).
5) Making a wishlist helps to stay focused on what I really want. The goal is to make wishlists that last long enough to pass the test of time, ie are real love. I will create a new "Wishlist" section on the right soon, but the Ravine dress (see pic at the beginning of this post) is currently at the top of it.
6) Money gifts and gift cards are welcome.
As you have probably understood, I hope that these rules are steps towards quitting the habit of checking Jcrew.com as soon as I open my eyes in the morning and scooping it for popbacks, clicking on the "Submit Order" button at least once a week, being always tuned on the latest Jcrew offer instead of being tuned on the needs of my family. I can already see the results: during the Thanksgiving promotions I did buy something but I had to limit myself and ultimately I bought one item that I really needed and re-bought a pair of Juliets for a much lower price that I had initially paid (and of course I will put my "gain" on the gift card). I had to let go of all those tempting tees and necklaces for $15.99 and a lot of other stuff (like summer stuff).
Now the amount on my card is close to 0 and guess what? I didn't even check the website for popbacks in the last four days. What for, I don't have money to spend at the moment lol!
This is liberating because I can actually peruse Jcrew.com and read all the Jcrew-related blogs without being constantly on a search for a good deal.
And because I firmly believe in the power of literature and I'm convinced that a good book can keep you away from the mundane (and in fact I don't know how to demonstrate this but I'm sure that I buy a lot less whan I am absorbed in a good reading) this weekend I have finally picked up (and more important, started to read) a book that was on my reading list since it came out but I didn't have time for because I was too busy with my Jcrew obsession. It's "A Gate at the Stairs" by Lorrie Moore, that I highly reccomend (I updated the "What I'm reading now" picture on the side panel. By the way, you weren't really thinking that I was STILL reading "Twilight", were you?)
I never do this but because this topic is pretty important to me, I encourage you to leave a comment in this post to tell me what you think of my resolution. Sloppy or a good idea? Can it help you too to overcome your Jcrew addiction?
I applaud your resolve. I agree with you, not using a credit card is key. It helps when one already has a nice substantial wardrobe as you do. Blogs can still help one shop within one's own closet.
ReplyDeleteI think the key is that you pinpointed where your energies were going and found a way to redirect them in a postive manner. That's awesome!
haha: "money and gift cards are welcome"
ReplyDeleteseriously though, this is a great idea, I might try something like this with my most dangerous stores. I don't have a hubby getting all stringent about the shopping, but I live with the bf and every time a box is at the door when we come home he grumbles, part of me is dreading the day that its "our money" I'm spending....
Good for you! I agree that you coming up with a plan that will work for you, as opposed to someone else coming up with a plan that they think will work for you, is a better route to success.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I never commented on your beaded top post but you look so lovely and I love the dancing picture. Yay for not wearing all black!!
Ema, I am very impressed! I think that this is a GREAT idea. I am going to do this when my shopping ban is over. Buy a gift card for myself once a month with just the budgeted amount on it! Now they are offering the email gift cards so it will be so easy to do! I honestly did not think of this and I think you are a genius for coming up with it. (Your husband must be happy! And I hope he will get you an extra gift card for Christmas!)
ReplyDeleteI also agree about the reading. I too have let my reading slide, AND working on my French AND my drawing hobby. These are all very fulfilling, calming things which are good for the soul and so important (especially as an example to kids!)
What a terrific resolution. You'll have to let us know when you do make a purchase, we will know it is an AWESOME one.
Are you going to continue to do reviews from the Store?
I think this is a great idea! I have often thought of doing the gift card thing myself.
ReplyDeleteSince I'm currently not working and the money comes from the BF I understand how easy it is to spend when its not yours and also how guilty you can feel afterwards. I went through my closet the other day and I actually have a huge pile of things to return - That SA is going to hate me.

ReplyDeleteThanks - I'm having to face up to overspending and overobsessing this fall/winter. I have lots of clothes, what more do I need or get a chance to wear?
ReplyDeleteAnyhow, I have A Gate At the Stairs on my list, too. Lorrie Moore is fantastic. Apparently, lots of "A Gate" is working off of Jane Eyre, so I plan to reread that first. Haven't touched it since I was a kid.
i think the giftcard is a great idea!
ReplyDeletefor me i have a budgeted amount each month, but i sometime go over it.
i am obsessed with the jcrew website too and you are right, i should spend my time reading or decorating(which i love).
jcrew stores are not a big temptation for me since i dont have any near me(i dont live in the states).
i love reading the blogs, but it makes me want to buy what i see.
I give you serious props for what you're doing. I don't know if it's the natural progression of things (or me finally admitting that yes, my husband did lose his job last January and I'm not bringing in the kind of money I used to -- yes, it took a good 11 months to figure that out) -- but I've actually been doing the same thing! It started when we moved - as I was putting my clothes into boxes I realized I had a TON of unworn/tags-still-attached items. And, bless J.Crew's soul, they'll accept any return for store credit - no matter how old - with the original receipt. Thankfully I saved all my receipts in a giant file folder, so for the most part I had each and every receipt. I was able to get SO many things in the last few months as a result of making all those returns (upwards of $1000+ at least). Yes, it's ridiculous that I had that many unworn clothes in my closet in the first place, but in addition to the "buy only with a gift card" rule, I've also got to only buy things I know I'll wear NOW. That means no more buying for next summer in the dead of winter (even if it IS a super-sale!) I've also found myself getting a lot more new arrivals than ever before - and paying full price or close to full price (if it's only a 20% discount). I'm finally wearing the clothes I have, and - lord help me - I'm going to stop with the J.Crew obsessions too. So SO glad to hear you're having success with your new shopping rules. I wish you the best of luck! :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about reading. A good book can do wonders. Plus, you can have a book at hand for yourself and read with your beautiful little one:)
ReplyDeleteCongrats on coming up with a plan to try.
I also think it is damaging, even on a small level, to hide packages from a spouse but that is just a personal belief of mine. (I just don't find it funny like many other do...)
I do wish you the best at following your new shopping rules:)
Happy Holidays.
ps I would love to hear about any great books you read!
You are me! I think it is the time of the year. With all of the expenses of the holiday, I feel like money is slipping through my fingers. I feel so out of control especially when I know I don't need anything I am buying. I just did a post today on my blog about the fact that I'm hiding my new purchases from my husband. You know that's a bad sign.
ReplyDeleteI like that you are creating a solution that will work for you. I agree that all out bans do not work.
I think this will be a great solution for you! I had this same problem at Target...I had to go there practically every week to buy my son diapers and then I was also wasting so much money in there on this and that, clearance items, fun things...so one day I found a bunch of boxes of diapers on clearance, bought them all (like 13 boxes!) and then eliminated the main reason I was going.
ReplyDeleteStay strong! :)
This is a very thoughtful and realistic solution! Thanks for sharing, I think it may help my addiction, too!
ReplyDeleteI love this! A brilliant solution. Today I made myself look at my visa statement and the total spent year to date on clothing - it was a horrible moment. I have also canceled my jcrew email - this does make a difference. There are so many other things I want to do - when I think of the number of hours I have spent on the j crew website instead.... I'm like you - my weakness is J Crew - and I am determined to put an end to this. I have stacks of clothes with tags - still in the plastic bags. I'm going to return the items that I don't love -- thank you so much for writing about this -- and yes, please tell us what you have purchased -- thanks!!
ReplyDeleteI think this is a great plan! I was beginning to get OOC as well (I think I read too many blogs). I am now expecting my second child and am in a funk where I haven't even browsed clothing for at least 3 weeks.
ReplyDeleteI think it helps that I am very mad at JC right now and all the stupid promotions and ridiculous shipping charges.
My good friend's father just passed away and that also kind of put things into perspective.
I too have wasted too much of my time shopping and returning while I have a gorgeous husband and daughter waiting for me. PS...I also used to hide my packages are rush home to beat him to the door. ...very, very sad.
Good luck! Be sure to provide us w/an update!
I think it's a fabulous idea and I may even give this a try. Credit cards really are almost evil. They do give a false sense of spending $$money. It's way easier to buy everything you want and not think about it while using a credit card. I actually need to start thinking through each purchase as well and decide it's something I LOVE and wanna wear RIGHT now. That gift card would force that idea and I really like it. Plus the budget would stand up to it. My use of a credit card has me buying every sale item because it's such a great "deal." Well, not sitting in your closet it's not! I should look at the tags and think of them as dollars all hanging in my closet..that's quite a "visual" isn't it?! Yikes! I wish you all the best and hope you will keep showing us the things you feel are SO worth it that you've decided to spend your hard-earned gift card:) It also makes for a whole world of developing fun, new outfit pairings that you haven't tried before.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea, I truly identify with this entry. The other day I randomly made the decision to not shop for myself for the month of December, and so far so good. It came out of nowhere, I mean I always think I'm buying more than I can afford or really need, but I think all the holiday-shopping frenzy got to me and when I think about how many people are without, I figured that one month of no shopping shouldn't be that big a deal.
ReplyDeleteMy advice is keep looking through magazines and blogs to stay creative on how to work with what you already own, it's definitely been helpful for me. Having a pre-paid card is realistic - it lets you know how far you can take things at JCrew. I definitely can attest to the store's appeal, but you already own so many awesome stuff....
I believe your solution will work. :-) Before I had a JC card I paid in cash. One year later, my JC card has to go. Or have the limit lowered severely. If I keep any balance on there, it offsets my perceived "savings," I.e. the recent GIFTS promo. And that is my biggest pet peeve.
ReplyDeleteITA w/unsubscribing to emails from companies. That helps quite a bit.
Good luck!
Wow - I am SO GLAD I read this. I have even gone so far as to research "shoppers annon" meetings in my area because I really feel out of control sometimes... especially online!
ReplyDeleteYour strategies seem very do-able for me (I think!) and reading this will hopefully give me the jumpstart I need to get back on track with a budget!
Please let us know how this works for you in the coming weeks and months!! I, too, would like to learn how to love the super-full and great closet I have now, instead of always lusting for new things I don't need!
Thanks for the post!
It is nice to know there are more of us out there with a shopping problem, my husband seems to think I am the only one!
ReplyDeleteI have tried so many things (like you have) but the gift card is a great idea. My husband is having me open my own bank account that is only for my shopping money, we'll see if that works too.I also try to avoid going into stores and I shop online more. Once I try something on in a store, I fall too in love and go way over budget. Online I can see the totals and TRY to be more reasonable.
Hang in there and good luck!
I'm like you, a total ban would never work for me. I have to just allow myself some purchases in moderation and do my best to keep it reasonable. I've been doing better lately. I have always been good about paying my credit card off at the end of every month, but lately I've been thinking about good all of that extra money would look in my savings account...
ReplyDeleteI think your gift card idea is a really good one! The other thing that is helping me is staying off the websites as much as possible (for me it's Anthro and J.Crew) and especially the sale sections. Just not looking has been the biggest help!
Slightly OT but after reading this I felt you maybe a great person for this sort of question/advice. I was planning on splurging/buying another JCrew coat and but held out for better percent off. I even held off this 25 % off. I know serious mental stamina but now I feel like there won't be a better deals on coats:( Do you think this might be end of such good deals with your Jcrew online/b&m shopping expertise or I did the right thing by holding off? Thanks for such a motivating post.
