But there is nothing better than a great new purchase to put BOB to a rest and give the tired blogger a renewed energy to try outfits in front of the mirror with a camera. At least, this is the effect that the Pastiche pencil skirt had on me.
Boy, I love this skirt. If you have been following this blog for a while you now that I don't usually wear pencil skirts (in fact I have a very few) because of my pretty casual lifestyle. Initially I didn't care much for this "pastiche" print on the shirt, cardi or the skirt itself, even if I own the scarf where the colors are slightly different. I thought it was a little bit too much and not at all my style. By the way, because JCrew apparently wants to educate his costumers by using "big" words, I played the game and looked up the meaning of "pastiche", that I vaguely knew was related to a form of art. Well, in case you didn't know, a pastiche is more exactly "a piece of art, music, literature, etc. which intentionally copies the style of someone else's work or is intentionally in various styles". Still, I didn't see why they would call this print "pastiche" exactly and what it was supposed to be imitating. The answer is in the website description of the cardigan in the same print: "One of our favorites of the season, with a fetching watercolor floral print (it reminds us of a work by one of our favorite Impressionist artists—and it's exclusively ours). Strangely, out of the seven items currently available on the website in this print, only the description of the cardigan provides the explanation for the "pastiche" in the name. Now you can let your imagination free and try to guess which artist they are talking about (could it be Monet?) I find kind of funny that they wouldn't say the name, like there was a copyright or a secrecy that they are afraid to infringe, like when they say that their cashmere yarn comes from a famous mill without saying the name.
But I digress. I started to have a second look at this skirt when I saw how they styled it in the catalog, with a green utilitarian jacket. That isn't the classic interpretation of a pencil skirt (that's one of the reason why more and more people turn to Jcrew, I guess) and it looked like something that I could wear in my everyday life. I became a little bit obsessed with it (actually with that look from the catalog) and when I heard that it went on sale I asked my PS to put one on hold for me (luckily she had one). I contemplated to order a P2 (my regular size in pencil skirts) but it was still FP on the website and the 0 available in store wasn't too big or too long (just a little bit), so I picked it up yesterday.
As everybody says, Jcrew knows how to make a pencil skirt and I think that the cotton textured ones, like this one, are particularly flattering and slimming.
You can certainly do ladylike, as it is a pencil skirt. This is my interpretation of ladylike, with heels and a cropped cardi:

The tee is the rosette tee from last year in shell and the cardigan is the new version (just arrived in stores) of the crystal-button featherweight cotton cardi in a color that to me looked identical to the desert brown (but the color code says DMU which I always thought was dark mushroom but doesn't remind me of a mushroom at all in this case):

What I really like in this skirt is its versatility and the fact that it goes with just about any color but navy/blue and black.
This is my take on the look in the catalog, with a camp shirt from a few years ago:

You think you have nothing to wear with it? It looks good with a plain tee:

Actually it looks even good with another "flower" tee. What a surprising "pastiche":

This is the Applique flower art tee, that went recently on sale and apparently is currently sold-out on the website. In my opinion is one of the best tee that they have made this season, very flattering and summery, but it was just too expensive and I waited for it to go on sale before buying it:

Too much? You can partially hide the flower under the same camp shirt and add a belt:

And you know what? You can even do blue with it after all, if you have a denim jacket (in this case the safari denim jacket from last summer):

I think that this might be a pencil skirt for those who think that pencil skirts are not for them. If you happen to see it in your B&M you should give it at least a try now that it's on sale. I personally think that the print is more stunning and less overwhelming in the skirt than in the shirt or cardigan.
Do you own this skirt? Do you like the "pastiche" print in general? Please share
Ema, thanks for all the different outfit ideas and the commentary about JC's website copy LOL. I'm also not a fan of the printed/ floral pencils for myself and don't get to B&M's very often from Canada. BUT I saw it in-store in Boston last weekend and agree, especially compared to the sunshine peony and some other recent same format skirts, this one has a very versatile palette and is is to dress down/ toughen up for less dressed up wear. Enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteHi Ema, thanks for the shout-out and I hope you're over the dreaded BOB now. :) And speaking for myself, I do enjoy your outfits very much - you always come up with some great styling ideas and have certainly inspired me to pick up some of the items you've worn.
ReplyDeleteI love, love this skirt on you. I have the scarf so will try to be content with that, but you're tempting me yet again with this one!!
Haha, BOB. I suffer from that, too. Good to have a name. Thank you, ABC and Ema. :)
ReplyDeleteI love this skirt with the floral top. LOVE!
I am so glad your sweet one napped today. My kids nap on a fairly regular basis, so I know how incredibly important those few hours every day can be to a mom' soul. ;)
BTW, your disqus comment came through over at my blog. Brava!
I love them all, but my favorite is of you wearing it with the camp shirt and belt. It really looks great on you.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great looking skirt! How much was it on sale? I am still dying for the scarf in that print!
ReplyDeleteI like that skirt on you--I would buy it myself if I didn't have last year's watercolor pencil skirt *and* this year's wool scarf in the pastiche print. In fact, I have quite a few JC pencil skirts, lol. I can wear them to work and then in the summer I dress them down with tees/tanks and flat sandals.
ReplyDeleteMy only beef with JC pencil skirts is that the waists always seem huge. I am an hourglass and typically have to have waist alterations, but my recent JC pencil skirt purchases have seemed unusually large.
Yes!!!!!! Please continue to indulge us with your daily outfits!! I love reading your blog and seeing your outfits and getting styling ideas~~so you better continue, haha!!
ReplyDeleteI love that skirt. Right now, being preggo, I cannot wear it. However, you have made some gorgeous, both classy and casual, outfits with this skirt. I am also intrigued by this glass button cardigan.......I think I also saw them the other day, but they just felt really, really thin and light. Do you remember how much they were? I do LOVE that brown color for the cardigan, so now, I have to go back and take a second peek at the cardigans!! Happy weekend!!
GetFresh, thank you and glad that you agree ;-).
ReplyDeleteABC, you have "enabled" me many times as well so I guess we are even ;-).
Dinagideon, yes naps are a necessity for blogger moms!
Patina, thank you! That's one of my favorite too. I also like it with a plain tee and I have just ordered the same that I'm wearing here but in the irish moss color as it is a perfect match with the skirt.
Dominique, it is $69.99 on sale but I used one of those 10% off coupons tha they were giving away for providing the email adress, so I paid a little it less.
Hexicon. I agree that their pencil skirts are a little big big in the waist. However I think that the cotton, unlined ones are more fitted that the ones that are lined (they are usually huge on me).
mrs.anketell, thank you, I know you are a big fan!
The crystal buttons cardi is very thin as you said (exactly like last year's) and retails for $62. In my opinion is cut more fitted than the one from last year. This color is so rare this days that I had to grab one.
I tried that skirt on and LOVED it, too!!!! It looks great the way you have styled in different variations. While I don't think I'd do black with it, I definately would wear a navy or blue. I think you showed it well when you put the denim on top. With so many variations, you've tempted me to go back and pick it up!
ReplyDeleteI think this skirt is becoming my favorite!! I completely over-looked it initially but (like you mentioned) after seeing it styled in the catalog~ I thought I'd give it a try! I ordered the petite size (and I'm 5'8"!) and it fits great~~ I wore it on Easter! :) I also have the scarf in this print too!! =P
ReplyDeleteI LOVE how you styled it in the last 2 photos!! I also LOVE your blog! I always enjoy seeing your OOTDs! ;)
I totally agree that out of all the pieces offered in this print, the skirt is the best (as the scarf doesn't even look like the same print, imo). I just think it's too much to have on up top!
ReplyDeleteIt is highly versatile..my favorite looks are the denim jacket with belt, the army green camp shirt-open with belt (looks a bit heavy for tucking in) and then just a simple tee and belt. ENJOY IT...you look fab as always:)
Beautiful!! I was torn between ordering this one or the Sunshine Peony skirt. They are so equally cute!!!!
ReplyDeleteI love your outfit pics!!!!
Thanks for the great ideas in styling this! Right now its on sale in the stores for a ridiculous $40. I think the petites fit a bit bigger but are $80 on the web and not available in stores so I sized down (yes they are huge on the waist). Since they didnt have my size I ordered on the red phone and although I had to pay shipping it's still a great deal. Now am crossing my fingers that it fits (will still need length alterations since I did not get the petite).
ReplyDeleteby the way, i just discovered your blog, and I love it!!! I am in NYC as well and I have a toddler.
