I have been looking for an evening black skirt for a while. I wanted something edgy but elegant, something that you would wear to an exhibition opening or even clubbing in a fancy club (now, for the records, I never go clubbing but if I had the occasion I would end up staying at home from "I have nothing to wear" panic attack).
When I first saw the Drapey Drexel Plisse Skirt at the Collection store, I immediately liked it but boy, (I thought) that was a short skirt! So I didn't even try it on, but I kept thinking about it. The next time that I was in the store I looked for it but it was gone, like in "shipped to another store". I finally found it in another store and bought it with a 10% off coupon. BTW, this is one of those items that are differently priced in store and online (the in-store price is $98, while it is $88 online). If you know the online price and you tell the SA when you are at the register, they will check and honor the lowest price (better know your prices by heart these days at JCrew, the discrepancies are more and more frequent).
I think that for the price it's a great skirt, with a very modern elegance to it. It's short for sure (you have to like short skirts) but you can size one up if you are concerned by the lenght. The 0 sits a little bit low on the hips on me but I think that it is better this way or it would really be too short, even for me. I have to say that I don't like how this skirt is styled on the website, with the grey tee and the brown belt: I think it deserves a little bit more va-va-voom. I get what they want to convey with that styling, that you can dress it down, but it is mainly an evening skirt because of the shiny fabric (it's poly), so why not to show it in all its dressy splendor? By the way, the website description of the fabric ("A beautiful new drapey wool fabric") isn't accurate. I even checked the tag and it's definitively poly, not wool.
Anyway, I will more likely wear it like this:

I love the pockets with the nice draping! I also tried to recreate a more dressed down look, similar to the one on the website (in case I don't go clubbing anytime soon), with a very old tee that must be the very first "embellished" tee that I bought at JCrew (I think that it's at least 5 years old):

And if I really wanted to belt it, I would wear it with the studded belt:

What do you think of this skirt? Did you even notice it on the website? Is it for you? If you are tempted and you have any question, let me know!
The skirt is adorable on you. I saw it in my store and wish they would have a made a knee length version, as I really like the fabric and the cut.
ReplyDeleteI saw it in the store and loved it, but it looked a little short to me. It does have a beautiful drape. I think it looks great on you and the way you've styled it makes it look really versatile.
ReplyDeleteJulie, if you like the cut there is another one which is very cheap right now ($29.99) and is more of a knee lenght (and in fact is in the suiting section). It's the Wool Drapey Claire skirt (24033) and it ha the same drape, but it's the same wool as the McKenzie blazer. I have tried it on and it was very nice but a little bit too long for my taste ;-))).
ReplyDeleteSue, thanks! Yes I can see how it can appear too short especially on the hanger.
Ema, it's really funny how we buy the same things...I got the Dauphine jacket, the ruffled vest, the city safari pants in pearl, the embellished tee in pearl .... and today I bought this skirt which I think it's great, dressy but very comfy and modern with the draped pockets.I plan on wearing it with a tee I got from Loft, white with black stones around the neck, black suede boots and a jean jacket....
ReplyDeleteI also got the Coralie Cami.
Oh, and the mink color, really looks nice with the Douphine jacket and a gold chain and pearls necklace I got from Target!
ReplyDeleteEma this looks so wonderful on you! Will you wear it with the Dauphine?
ReplyDeleteAfter being in Paris I am convinced I cannot have too many black skirts (that are NOT a pencil skirt). Do you notice that in Paris all the women, even older women, wear perfect, shorter skirts? Or was that just me?
I bought the Linen Charter in black, arrived today. I'll do a review of it next week, I like it out of the box and it may be perfect for summer (I finally gave away ALL of my shorts! I never wore them, just not my style.)
Oh, it's beautiful! It looks great with the ruffled shirt you're wearing in the first two, but I have to say I love it with the gray T -- I think that's a really great combination!
ReplyDeleteI laughed when I saw it was poly. I love the skirt, though. It has a nice weight and the draping is nice. I tried it on in this post and added your link to it.
