The Lighthouse Cardigan IRL

Let me start this post by saying that I had another title for it involving Ash Wednesday and the particular color of the sweater that I am going to review but it crossed my mind that some of my readers might be offended by it, so I decided to choose my readers'feelings over a good pun and censured myself (still, I think it was a great title!)
When I first arrived in the United States Ash Wednesday was actually one of the things that really struck me, I didn't expect the ritual to have such a following in the USA. I find it a great sign of civilization that catholics in the USA wear their cross sign at work and in the streets. I come from a traditionally catholic country and I don't remember people going around with the cross sign of ashes on their forefront (maybe we washed it away out of the Church? But that would be against the purpose of remembering for at least one day a year that "thou art dust, and to dust thou shalt return". I should know, since I was raised catholic and was a fervent practictioner until my confirmation, then I started to doubt and the faith never came back).

But I digress. I wanted to talk about white ash, which is, more trivially, one of the two colors the Lighthouse cardigan comes in (the funny thing is, the other color could be appropriately called "ash", while the white one has a slight pink undertone that really doesn't remind me of white ashes). I hadn't planned this post for today but I bought it yesterday and I want to share with you a few IRL pics of this cardigan in case you are considering it. This color is $79.99 in store and currently more expensive than if you buy it on the website with the 30% off promo; however, the advantage of buying it in store is that it is not final sale and before committing for life to it I wanted to try it with a few things that I have at home. Also, I didn't know if I should size up in this sweater or buy my regular size, as in real life it appears much shorter than on the model. In the end I bought my regular size XS, because it was more proportioned on my short figure but if you are taller you can size up. The sleeves in the XS are a little bit tight but I don't think that I am going to wear this one over a long-sleeve shirt anyway.

I was drawn to this cardigan because I have very few summer cardigans in the same weight and I thought that it would be a good one to throw on in the morning in our early summer, when the air is still crisp, and look put together. In particular, I though it would be a good one to wear with dresses and skirts. This is how it looks with the bell cotton skirt:

By the way, my folded bow tank (or whatever it was called last year) is exactly the same color of the skirt (faded black with black grosgrain belt for the skirt and same faded black with black trim and bows for the tank. I love when the colors match!):

But the real test for the cardigan was my Carly ruffled dress, that I wore very little last year because it is a tough one to wear with a topper (jacket or cardigan) and I find it a little bit too heavy to wear when it is really warm and could be worn alone.
The problem with this dress is that the ruffles and sleeves add bulk and will show through the fabric if the cardigan is not chunky enough. I tried almost everything in my closet and besides an old Theory open cardigan that I can only wear belted, nothing works.
This one isn't perfection (the sleeves still show through the cardigan) but I think that it's good enough. The other color, if a match would work even better because darker but I like the white one better in general:

Belted it looks more stylish but I can also throw it on unbelted if I am late (which is 99% of the time):

The only problem with the sweater is that it sheds off white lints and that can be a nightmare, especially if you wear it with darker color like in these pics. However, I hope that that will end after the first wash (finger crossed).

Are you a fan of this sweater?

PS
I am sorry if I am trying really hard to make my posts difficult to read with my typos but I can't find the spell check in the new version of Blogger!

  1. I actually love the cardigan on you! It looks great with the dress, and open, sort of hanging loosely. Love it! Will you keep it?? I also love how the black skirt matches the tank--i have that very same tank from last summer and am considering the skirt--did you go with your true size for the skirt? or size up/down?? thanks for any advice!! love this post, i think you should keep the cardigan:)

  2. I had this cardigan in the gray and it also shed like gangbusters. I found it to be very unflattering and I notice you don't have a photo with it buttoned up without a belt, which is how I wanted to wear it and it looked awful on me that way. I also noticed that on mine, one side of the left pocket had a bulge where it was not stitched on in a straight line and one of the shoulders also had uneven stitching. Overall it was a huge fail for me and I returned it. Hope you have better luck if you decide to keep it. As always I appreciate the photos.

  3. Thank you for giving props to the Americans for wearing the ashes on their foreheads all day. I grew up believing (and still do) that you MUST NOT WASH away the ashes, as this shows the world the how we are all from ashes and to ashes we shall return. I plan on instilling the same in my kids as they get older. I have spent years teaching others that it isn't "dirt" on my forehead and for years I would get awe-struck looks as I would teach with the crud on my face. LOL. But to be in such a religious tolerant place and to be teaching American history, it seemed incredibly worthwhile for me to show off my bit of "religious freedom." :)

I also beat my chest (a tap over the heart) when the consecration of the body and blood occurs at the Liturgy of the Eucharist, so I think I was definitely raised Old School Catholic. I am like one step away from wearing a lace scarf on my head to mass.

Anyhow, I love the cardigan on you, I can see why you would choose it for your wardrobe. What a great, versatile piece.

  4. mrs.anketell, yes I am going to keep it. I went with my true size with this skirt (0) as it isn't as short as the other skirts/minis and it can be easily worn lower on the hips. On the other side I think that the black one or this one in particular fits a little bit smaller compared to the other colors that I tried and sizing one up won't make an enormous difference overall. HTH!

xoxo, I am sorry that it didn't work for you. It is true that I wouldn't wear it completely buttoned up. I tried the grey one in a S and it was definitively more relaxed so maybe sizing up would work in your case?

Dina, I appreciate you sharing your personal experience and I do give kuddos to the USA for being such a tolerant nation, especially in terms of religion.

  5. Well, I love a good pun, even a religious one! And I really love that cardi! Especially belted, but I like it open too. Funny how you pass a certain item over in the stores, and then you see it on someone else, and then you get a case of the 'must haves'.

    Looks great on you!

  7. I might be in the minority, but I love this cardigan (in both colors - although after what xoxo said, I'm going to recheck my seams carefully before wearing)! Love it as an option over the Carly dress on you, Ema.

  8. Ema-

Whenever the online price is cheaper than the in-store price I always ask if they will price match and they always do! The stripe linen dress was $29.99 online and $39.99 in store, and they gave me the $29.99 price although not the 30% off. And, like you said, it's not final sale!!

I love the sweater too by the way! I always have sweater amnesia and buy them even though I know they'll be ruined. Boo.
