Good morning ladies! Wow, we are almost at the end of week, time has flown for me.
Did you watch the Oscars on Sunday night? Through the end, I mean. I did, but boy, were they boring, and even if I could just watch James Franco over and over I must admit that he wasn't the best host (there is a fun thread over at Jezibel where people who "don't get James Franco" ask what's about him. Personally, besides the cuteness factor, I just like that his career went seamlessly from sweetheart to gay activist and stoned drug-dealer). I know that people think he looks stoned all the time but I think than Christian Bale looked even more stoned this award season (he takes something, right?)
Oh, and did you get Justin Timberlake joke ("I am Bansky")? Honestly, I had to Google it. I thought it was sme sort of sex joke directed towards his partner, the beautiful Mila Kunis whom Justin has been reported to aggressively court (she did looked a little bit pissed, didn't she?) That was the best moment of the show, along with Kirk Douglas pausing before giving away the Best Acress in a Supporting Role award (much better than the F word uttered by Oscar winner Melissa Leo).
Speaking of awards, I was soooo disappointed that "The King's Speech" won over "The Social Network" and that David Fincher didn't get an Oscar for Best Director (seriously!). I loved "The Social Network", it is an important movie for our times that perfectly describes in a very minimalistic way that technology and the shift to virtual relationships can't replace real friendship (BTW, yesterday night I watched another movie starring Andrew Garfield, who played Eduardo in the Social Network. The movie is "Never Let Me Go" and I really reccomend it, if you are up for some serious but meaningful sadness. Now I want to read the book by Kazuo Ishiguro, who, incidentally, also wrote another masterpiece brought to the screen years ago, "The Remains of the Day"). And what about "Inception" not getting best screenplay? Come on, Academy!
The Oscars were a little bit boring even from a fashion point of view, IMO. None of the dresses really wowed me, besides the Gwyneth Paltrow "liquid gold" Calvin Klein number (I would have totally worn that). Did you notice that there were much more sequins than at the Golden Globes? I thought that it would have been a good year to wear JCrew to the Oscars. I also really liked Annette Benning (I always like her and she is such an articulate speaker). My daughter (who watched the red carpet arrivals with me) liked Mandy Moore, she asked if she was a princess ;-).
Anyway, the following are two much less glamourous outfits that I wore this week. You know that I love stripes and my wearing stripes in this deceptively cold first week of March can be considered as an attempt to call for spring (a little bit like the opposite of a rain dance).
The first outfit is a Gap sweater that I bought on sale ($19) around the holidays (you have seen it in one of my Gap fitting room pics back in the Fall). I LOVE this sweater, it is a substantial cotton perfect for our spring weather and I wore it quite a lot around the house already but I broke it out for the first time last Tuesday, with a tissue turtleneck underneath (you can see I was ready for school, as I was wearing the school badge):
Yesterday I wore another striped top, the Loft hoodie that I bought before going on vacation in January. I love this one too and I got to wear it quite a lot already under my black cashmere henley, like yesterday:
Third striped top that I haven't worn yet because I bought it with the 30% off last week and was just delivered to my door is the striped painter tee. I really recommend this one now that it's on sale, it's extremely flattering (fits TTS). I tried it with another item that I received in the same order, the lovely cotton bell skirt in faded black. As a matter of fact I don't have a black casual skirt for the summer and I really liked this one in the two other colors when I tried it on, so I decided that $35 was a price that I was willing to pay and be in peace with even if it goes further down. I am glad that I did because it is still $49.50 in store and it is almost sold out in my size. Shopping at JCrew really feels like gambling these days. It is 17" long so I didn't have to size up and ordered my segular size 0. The striped tee is a XS:
Did you watch the Oscars? Do you agree with the Academy? Who was your personal best dressed? And, most and foremost, do you get James Franco?
I have more new arrivals pics (went back yesterday) including the lace lady popover and the Oleander lace dress. Stay tuned!

Ema, I am 100% with you on all of your Oscar comments, esp David Fincher's disappointing loss and the James Franco cuteness factor. Have you ever seen him in Freaks and Geeks? It was his first role and potentially his most adorable. Oh, and speaking of adorable, love your look in that top! SO figure-flattering.
ReplyDeleteEma-I watch the Oscars every year-it is to me what the Super Bowl is to football fans. I agree with your comments, and no, I don't "get" James Franco. Did you happen to see the Sequin lattice sweater-vest in the collection store? I actually called them yesterday to ask about it because none of the Luxe stores in my area have it. I'd love to hear your comments if you've seen it. TIA. Can't wait to see your other pics. You look so cute in your stripes!
ReplyDeleteI loved Gwyneth's dress. I didn't watch it, it's only on on Sky over here so just saw snippets, I don't even think I've seen James Franco in anything so I can't comment.
ReplyDeleteOh I was going to answer something else you asked but nop - gone!
I think this is my first time posting although I read your blog regularly. My favorite Oscar dress was Mandy Moore, at least on the red carpet (I think she changed into a different dress for her performance?) so your daughter has excellent taste, haha. My favorite is also the Social Network but I think Americans can't resist a foreign accent, non-Yanks are always winning Oscars!
ReplyDeleteI watched James Franco on GH, I thought he was weird and fit his character to a "t." Myserious and really odd. I thought the awards were flat.
ReplyDeleteI love the striped hoooie and how cleaver to layer it with a cashmere henley. Is the sweater black or navy, I can't tell. Thanks for the post, can't wait to see your reviews of the Lady lace popover.
LOL! I meant hoodie!
ReplyDeleteI was very happy that Social Network won for music as I thought it was brilliant for the movie!
ReplyDeleteI really like Cate Blanchett's dress though I think I am in the minority. I just loved it.
Love your stripes and I am really looking forward to your reviews, especially the Oleander dress.
Ema--my favorite thing about this post is your daughter peeking through your arm in the photo with you and the black sweater and striped hoodie. SO CUTE!
ReplyDeleteOh, how bored I was, also, watching the Oscars. Oh well. Love the striped hoodie, underneath the sweater, and I am kicking myself for not getting the cotton belle skirt in black (i had it in my cart!!) and the striped tee, (love it!!) with the last percent off sale!! Love that whole outfit!!!!!
ReplyDeleteLizzy, thanks and no I haven't yet (I know, I know). Added to my Netflix queue!
ReplyDeleteJulieStyles, I am like you (I actually have to watch all the award shows and my favorite is the Golden Globes, much more fun even if less prestigious.
Yes, I saw the lattice vest in the lighter color at the Collection store and it is gorgeous. I wouldn't know where to wear it though (and how to wear it) so I never tried it and I can't comment on the fit. Now it is sold-out (or at least they don't have it on the selling floor any longer).
Tabitha, maybe you wanted to comment on "Never Let Me Go" since it's a British movie? Franco was in more movies than you think. You have probably seen him in Milk (where he plays Sean Penn's lover) if not Spider-Man. He even played Allen Ginsberg in "The Howl"!
dinster, thanks for leaving a cooment and following (I know you from JCA)! Yes, she changed and wore a blue gown but the red carpet "princess" dress was much better.
Molly, the sweater (you mean the henley, right?) is black, as are the pants but I aso have it in navy. It's one of my favorite styles from JCrew.
DaniBP, I liked the music of the Social Network too but personally I would have loved to see the award going to Inception. Having seen Inception in a movie theater I can say that it has one of the best music EVER (there is an important sequence where I was literally feeling like I was waking up from a bad dream thanks to the music and impeccable direction).
Dinagideon, yes, I loved that the camera captured her peeking through my arm. She was probably screaming "Mom, what are you doing, we are late for school!" ;-).
mrs.anketell, don't worry, there will be another % off soon ;-).
ReplyDeleteThe Oscars were BO-RING this year... both the red carpet and the show. I loved Cate Blanchett's Givenchy dress, as well as Mila Kunis' Elie Saab. I also really liked Anne Hathaway's dark red Valentino dress (what she wore to present, not the hideous one she wore on the red carpet that had an ass-bag).
ReplyDeleteI love your outfit with the striped painter tee and the bell skirt. Very flattering and cute! You and I share a stripe obsession... and after seeing this tee on you I am trying very hard not to buy another. striped. tee.
I'm in agreement with you. Gwyneth;s dress was what I would have worn out of the whole lot, given the choice.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the pics!
not a movie goer, didnt watch, but I liked the electric blue Armani dress that Ann wore, that was really gorgeous
