The Romper

I went to the Collection store to get the Casbah perfect shirt after spending almost my entire morning trying to decide between the shirt and the tunic (and losing another coveted item in my undecision).

When I arrived I was taken aback by the view of the romper, that they had received in the meanwhile. Since I was there and I was going to try the shirt in my real size, I told myself "Why not?" So are you ready for IRL pics of the Casbah romper?

Admittedly it is better than I thought, more flattering than the dress on me and I didn't feel too old to wear it, probably because I can still wear shorts. But for the life of me I can't figure out when I would wear a silk romper, it seems very umpractical for everyday life (with a back zipper to make things more complicated) and not dressy enough to be an occasion ...romper (if such a thing exists). Going out in a romper: do people do that?

This is the 0. The fit is TTS but depending on the size of your hips you might need to size up to get it on, because of the seaming at the waist (unlike a dress you can't pull it down through your head. A thing that you have probably forgotten about rompers if you haven't a toddler around). The shorts portion is not too short (it's a 4" inseam) and not too clingy, which makes it a little bit more sophisticated :

I went with the perfect shirt instead. The whole outfit below, actually, which is much more weareable (the shorts are the Oxford shorts in island aqua, which is greener IRL than on my monitor, in a 0 and I am totally in love):

Any romper lovers out there?

  1. You look really cute in that romper, but you are right -- where would you wear that? Most people would probably assume you are wearing a shorts/top ensemble.

Your choice of the perfect shirt/shorts is much better!

  2. the romper looks super cute one you! I love it, but you are right - it's utterly impractical (how do you - ahem - go to the bathroom?).

I'm not going to lie though. If it makes it to super sale I don't think I'm going to be able to resist it.

  3. You look great in that romper, but seriously, WHAT was J Crew thinking? When they put out stuff like this, wasting otherwise gorgeous fabric, I think the designers must live on another planet. That said, lately I have seen grown women wear rompers and all I can say is, they must have the bladder of a camel.

  4. You look great in the romper but all I could notice was the fabric layout on the pant portion! What's up with that? ;)

Love the blouse (loved it the other day on you) and the shorts.

Think they are both classics with years of wear plus I don't know why that blouse couldn't extend into other seasons.

  5. "occasion romper" - too funny!

You look fantastic in your perfect shirt and shorts outfit.

  6. Ema, you look BEYOND adorable in both outfits, but the second one just has "YOU" written all over it and is soooooo cute! Love it with your tan Revas, too.

One question about the oxford shorts -- did you find that they fit TTS or similarly to the chino shorts? I have a vague recollection of them fitting a little smaller.

By the way, I gotta agree 1,000% with dinster's spot-on and hilarious comments, and with Urban Blonde's about the bizarre print placement on the shorts portion of the romper. That was probably random, but how, um, unfortunate! LOL!

  9. Love the print, infact I went out to look at if based on yr blog yesterday. The romper looks great on you,

too bad they did the dress strapless a sleeveless dress would allow be versatile (IMO)

  10. Rose, thank you!

kater, I hope that you can get it on super-sale!

dinster, your comment is hilarious but I have to admit, I am one of those women who never go to the ladies' room. I can hold it!

URBAN BLONDE, I hadn't noticed that, you are right! Imagine if I had paid over $200 for it!

    kristin, thank you!

JCAUNC Mom, thank you. Actually those aren't the tan Revas, they are the flannel ones (recent ebay find). But I am going to take your suggestion to wear the tan Revas with this outfit. Or maybe now I really need those green ballet flats that came out in the new rollout!
I am a little bit confused about the Oxford fabric in general. I could barely put the scout chinos on in my regular size, but these fit well in a 0 (while I am more of a 2 in shorts). I haven't bought any other shorts this year, so I can't compare with the chinos. Sorry, I know it isn't very helpful.

Kimchi Girl, if it's to wear a pencil skirt over the shorts portion, why don't you get the short-sleeved blouse instead (for half the price)? Just my 2 cents...

Tabitha, I can see you in that romper. Is it on net-a-porter?

isabella, too bad they didn't have more pieces in your store. I don't think the shirt will make it to sale though!

  11. Very cute and I love this print. You said you were deciding between the perfect shirt and tunic. Were you able to try on the tunic? If so, I'm curious to know how it fits?

  12. audreybella, I didn't see nor try the tunic. In the end I decided to go with the perfect shirt because I think I will get more wear out of it than the tunic and didn't order it (it's catalog only, I think). I am actually thinking about ordering the Crewcuts halter dress, I think I can get away with the size 14 (and it's mashine-washable!)

  13. The print is lovely but I have never understood the concept of the (adult size) romper - great on babies/toddlers, a little iffy on adults. Anyway, the shirt and the shorts combo are perfect on you - so fresh and summery looking!!
