Movie Set Inspiration: Keira Knightley in "Last Night" And The Camel Trench Coat

Saturday night I watched a movie that I highly recommend, not only because it is a very good movie but also because of the fashion worn by the main femal character played by Keira Knightley. The movie is called "Last Night" (www.lastnightmovie.com) and I had never heard about it, however is one of the best movie on relationships that I have seen in a while (it's about a married couple who goes through cheating temptations during one night and it has a little bit of a thriller pace, even if the whodunit is actually a who will cheat.) It plays instantly on Netflix so if you have this feature you can watch it right away. It reminded me a little bit of "Closer" by Mike Nichols, that I never quite understood completely but I like to watch because of the actors and athmosphere. It also features the French actor Guillame Caunet whom I have never particularly liked but is very intense in this movie as the old flame who comes back to induce Keira into temptation.

Anyway, during most of the movie Miss Knightley is wearing this classic trench coat, casually cinched over a dress:

I have to say, I have never seen anyone looking that good in a camel trench coat and of course it immediately gave me cravings (I have two camel coats but no trench whatsoever besides an old Zara raincoat that I am going to retire soon). She is always beautiful and she can be very elegant in her sweatpants, but that coat is something that would look good on anyone and made me think about splurging on something classic and timeless like this. In the movie I really liked how she wears it over that evening silk wrap dress (which was swoon-worthy too BTW) instead of a more predictable black coat. I didn't find the information on the coat brand but the movie has been shot in 2008 (even if it just came out here) so even if I could tell you who made it it would be long gone from the stores. It screams Max Mara to me (even if the Max Maras, like their iconic 101801 camel coat tend to be oversized and this has a more of a slim fit) but it could also be a Burberry. In any case that warm shade of camel-bordering-caramel is usually a characteristic of camel hair or a blend of cashmere and camel hair. I especially like the collar and the fact that it doesn't have epaulettes/buckles at the cuffs and tie, which makes it classic instead of military-looking.

I looked what's out there and didn't find an exact replica of this coat. Max Mara is offering the Vampata coat:

but it's more of a kimono coat than a trench coat. I like this one from Burberry:

but it doesn't have an incorporated belt and it is almost too structured.

JCrew Icon trench in wool-cashmere could actually be a good look-alike (even if it has epaulettes and is shorter than what I had in mind), but it looks like the color is a duller beige IRL (see it on DaniBP):

Anyway, if you want to see the coat that Keira is wearing in all its glory, rent "Last Night". It is a very good movie and you won't be disappointed, I promise.

Anybody out there looking for a camel trench coat this season? Anybody who watched and liked this movie?

  2. Thanks for the shout out Ema!
You know I think I watched this movie just before I ordered that coat!
I also really liked the movie and thought Keira's style was amazing. I loved that her coat was the centre of her wardrobe, even when she wasn't wearing it it was hanging in the background in the open apartment, as if it was a character in the movie.
That French actor, I found him very handsome, he has a great smile.
Going to go see ajc's suggestion now!

  3. ajc, yes I love Netflix. Thanks for the suggestion, I had seen that coat but it is more military-looking than I would like it to be for that price.

DaniBP, Guillaume Canet is the companion of Marion Cotillard in real life, they make for a great couple (methink). They played in a movie that is very enjoyable too, if a bit grotesque, "Love Me If You Dare".
That's funny about you ordering the Icon coat after watching the same movie. I wanted to ask you about the length actually: does it fall under the knee (it looks very short on the model)? My coats are all short (because I am petite and look better in a short coat) but I would like a coat that actually covers my dresses/skirts. I read on the JCA that you received the black one, I can't wait to see it on you!

  4. Hi Ema,
The Icon comes above the knee on me, I'll try it on tomorrow and take a photo.
For you it might approach the knee as you are not as tall as me. Mine definitely won't cover my skirts/dresses, but those are all to the knee on me for fall and winter.
I have to say I love the wool Icon once I purchased the right color. The black is boring and basic but the coat of the coat is great, I didn't care for last year's version.
He is the partner of Marion Cotillard! Yes they would be a beautiful couple.

Did you see the Talbots coat I blogged about? It is a really nice one.

  6. I've bought a long Maxmara camel coat, I had one about 20 years ago, i won't be getting rid of this one, it's lifetime piece. I really love their clothes, I wish i could afford head to toe Maxmara.

  7. Not a camel trench per say but I have a camel wool coat from 2004 from JCrew that is AMAZING. Their current coats don't even come close to the quality of this baby. However, I do have my grandmother's camel hair (yes camel hair you read that right!) coat that is a trench from many many years ago. Talk about a classic. I get so many compliments on it. It is a heavy coat however.
