Trend Alert: Wear Your Pajama Out!

I am afraid I am going to annoy you again with Ryan Gosling (who, BTW, is in the movie theaters with 3 movies this fall) but this time only to take inspiration from one of his latest fashion statements.
Even if it isn't really new, it was just brought to my attention (courtesy of an old Elle magazine) that Ryan wore a pajama top to a promotional photo shooting during the last Cannes film festival:

This could just have been an actor eccentricity but with the blessing of a trendsetter like Alexa Chung you can be sure that you are going to see a lot of people showing up in their pajamas on the red carpet or at a party near you. In her last collection for Madewell, that just launched on the Madewell website, Alexa put out these pajama top and pants, worn as separates (they both sold-out in a blink):

If you want to wear this trend, you don't necessarely have to shell out $200 to buy the Alexa Chung top, but not any pajama will do it. It has to be silk and possibly in a whismical print. Also, learn from Ryan: you have to be perfectly groomed in order not to look as if you were really sleeping and someone just woke you up.

I was ahead of this trend, for a change. Last year during the Xmas sale, I happened on the ivory polka-dots silk pajama that JCrew made for the holidays (it was a store-only item) and I couldn't resist buying the top, even if I couldn't find the matching bottom in my size, thinking that I could wear it alone as a top. I dressed it up and wore it with jeans and pearls for a romantic dinner at home on Valentine's day (I had made profiterols, my husband favorite dessert):

But thanks to Ryan and Alexa, I am going to dare and wear it out tonight, to a dinner party at friends. It can be an extremely sophisticated look, or a totally sloppy one and the key not to look sloppy is to accessorize.
Look at the transformation from sloppy to sophisticated:

A necklace makes a big difference already:

Because pajama tops are a little bit oversized by definition, I am going to tuck it in (in this case, in the curator pants) and add a jeweled belt:

In the street I am just going to add an open cardigan (wearing a red lipstick and high heels is a must and completes the look):

Voila! What do you think of the pajamawear trend? Would you wear your pajama out? By the way, if you have the bottom in a XS and you want to sell it, I will gladly buy it from you!

  1. So cute. It doesn't even look like a pajama top. I really love it with the necklace. I didn't know this was a trend. That's why I read your blog, to stay up on what's 'hip and happenin'.
I don't have any really nice pajama tops, so I won't be joining this trend, at least not right now.

  3. I could barely drag my eyes off the profiteroles!
The PJ top looks just like a blouse, it will be perfect - yep my pi's are all brushed cotton - I'll be keeping them indoors.

  4. Brilliant idea to use a silk PJ top as a blouse! I think I might have to try that out too! Love the polka dots, so very pretty.
