Now, I understand that Miami is a big US city where people work and have a normal life and don't necessarely go to the beach and sip cocktails all day long but for me is enough of an exotic destination (they have palm trees there, right?) to make me switch into tropical vacation mode. Not to mention that for us Italian people Miami will always be remembered as the city where Versace used to live in an over-the-top villa and was shot to death. Exotic enough, as I said. So, I am putting together a tropical vacation wardrobe for this trip, with the help of our friend JCrew but especially my friend Lilly Pulitzer, which has become my number one store to go when shopping for a warm weather vacation. I am assuming it will be warm enough to lounge around the pool during the day and maybe a bit chilly when the sun goes down in the evening (if you live in Miami, please let me know if I am wrong).
A few days ago I found the perfect dress for this vacation, a Lilly sweater dress (100% merino) in a beautiful print and gorgeous green color. It is on sale in stores and still full price online (if you are interested it's called "pipster dress"). It also comes in navy (the print is a bit different) and pink. Wearing a size S, as Lilly dresses tend to run small (and short):
I plan to wear it with flats or low-heels during the day if it's not too hot but I can easily dress it up for the evening with a pair of high heels and maybe a belt:
A quick note about the strappy sandals that I am wearing with the dress. They are Talbots from the past summer collection and they are currently $27 on the Outlet site, which is more or less the price that I paid (only a size 9 is available but they might popback, you can buy them here.) They seem very comfortable to wear for a stiletto-heel (they are a little bit padded) and they run TTS (unlike other Talbots shoes that run fairly big IMO). They look definitively much more expensive than $30 or even the price they originally retailed for.
Back to my vacation, I have a dress that simply has to come to Miami with me even if I am not sure that I am going to wear it with daughter-in-toe (after all it's a family trip and I am not going to party but it's an easy dress to throw in the suitcase in case and it screams "Miami" to me). Some of you will remember it as I had posted pictures when I bought it last spring (I then returned it and rebought it for cheaper at the end of the season). It's Lilly again and this style is called Whitaker, but it's the print that makes it so special (this is a XS):
I love them with the caprese tunic, that can double as cover-up (I really like this tunic, I am kicking myself for not getting the blue stone one too, as this one is too sheer for the city). Sorry for the wrinkles, clearly needs some ironing before I put it in the suitcase:
Also as cover-up, I also going to take one of the two Boden tunics that you have seen in this post (I ended up keeping both, for the price) and the H&M striped dress. As for long pants options I am going to take my green garment-dyed toothpick, to wear with a white shirt (that I can also wear with the shorts) or a printed tee as seen here:
They can also double as "going-out" pants with a sparkly top. For the chilly moments, I am going to take my cashmere zip-front hoodie, the Nolita jeans jacket and a half-zip fleece by Lilly. I have been looking for a decent fleece that desn't make me look like I am going to the gym forever and when this one showed up during the recent 2-day sale I jumped on it. The ruffle makes it a little less casual than your regular fleece (it is micro-fleece), the blue is to die for and the XS fits perfectly. It does even have a cute printed cotton trim around the zipper and at the cuffs and the best part is that I bought the same for my daughter, so we are going to play mommy and me (I am probably going to wear this on the flight):
I am not planning to take any jacket besides the Nolita (that I don't have yet but I plan to get sooner than later; it was on my wishlist anyway). What do you think? Should I take a jacket and if yes what kind of jacket? A windbreaker/raincoat?
If you think of something that I should absolutely think of taking, please let me know (especially if you live in Miami or Florida!) Of course I am taking my swimsuit collection and probably even add to it something in the fanfare print. I still have more than a week to get ready and I am going to place an order at Jcrew for the Nolita and the Lucca sandals in heritage green to try on and see IRL (they look exactly the same green than the first Lilly dress that I showed you, but you never know with JCrew) so I can throw something in if needed. The question that I have for you is: boat shoes or not? I am tempted to bring the pink Sperry that I bought on clearance but do people really wear boat shoes in real life? Have you seen someone wearing them?
Have a good end of your week!

I'm in Orlando and that first Lilly sweater dress would be too hot to wear in the day, maybe at night. Those green pants are perfect and yes, boat shoes are very popular. Consider them the winter alternative to sandals and flip flops. We get tired of sandals! Go see the Versace mansion, it's right across the street from the ocean. Have fun!
ReplyDeleteHope you have a great trip! We were in Orlando a few weeks ago and the temps were the same...78-80 during the day and high 50s at night. I wore jeans and tanks during the day (but def could have done a sundress). At dark it got chilly ( I am cold natured) and I wanted a sweater or denim jacket for sure! We only had one "cold" day in the low 50's but it felt pretty cold to me bc FL is so water surrounded and it was a damp cold. On that day I had a J crew puffer and was fine:)
ReplyDeleteHi Ema!
ReplyDeleteEven though I live in Manhattan, I grew up in Miami. Just so you know, 60s during the day is unseasonably cold. Miami is always warm! Well, hot to us in NYC, not so much for them. I would only bring ONE sweater, and probably rethink the merino dress. I guess maybe with bare legs it would be fine, but it will be very warm all the time. It's certainly gorgeous. Unlike the Mediterranean climate, it will be warm all the time. The heat and humidity don't go away at night. The weather is most like the Caribbean. So pack just like you were going to the Bahamas again. At night, the ocean breeze might get chilly after a while. However, the biggest chill factor will be the air conditioning. Also, the best thing about Miami is you can wear all the colors you like. It might rain, in which case it will be really humid and maybe like low 60s, but then the air conditioning will be BLASTED everywhere. You might want a sweater just to deal with this. I think the clothes you picked out are just perfect - I would just bring more shorts and less sweaters. What's also great about Miami is that no one buys any of the sweaters and things at J Crew so you can get GREAT prices this time of year.
If you decided to fly Spirit Airlines (the worst airline in the US), do yourself a favor and check in exactly 24 hours before. They're almost always delayed, and if they have a mechanical problem on their planes (It's happened 4 times to me), they will "downgrade" to a smaller plane. The way they decide if you get a seat is based on time of online check-in. You don't want to be stranded like I have been (repeatedly).
Also I would go eat at Versailles restaurant (3555 Southwest 8th Street Miami, FL 33135-4196) for authentic and incredible Cuban food. Also News Cafe on South Beach is fun (800 Ocean Drive, Miami Beach, FL 33139). You should take a walk along Ocean Drive and see the Versace Mansion!
Have a blast. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Also people do wear boat shoes, constantly, so I would bring them. That or flip flops.
ReplyDeleteI love your colors and patterns for this trip: so Miami!
ReplyDeleteI find the air conditioning a big problem in Florida. Dominique is right, they blast it everywhere. I always need sweaters for going to dinner or to the mall.
I have nothing to recommend as far as restaurants, the few times I was in Miami my sister was living there and we usually ate in, unless we went to "Mall Italian" at the Aventura Mall.
I hope you have a fabulous time!
I second the motion on a/c. We just checked in, the thermostat was set at 63* and we turned it up, put on sweaters and jackets and went for a walk till the room was bearable. And we are staying at the Biltmore, not camping out under the boardwalk.
ReplyDeleteThe restaurant scene in Miami is constantly in flux. I like Escopazzo, and tonight we're trying Douglas Rodriguez' latest place at 101 Ocean Ave in South Beach. I've liked his cooking for a long time, he keeps opening and closing restaurants, and I always find him. Miami is a very Latin city, so it's easier to get reservations at 7 or 8 than at 10 or 11, although with La Principessa along, you probably won't want to eat that late anyway. I'm traveling with a guy who gets hungry early (and often!), but I might as well have brought a 6-year-old.
have a wonderful time!
And check the weather before you leave, this morning it was in the high 40's, last night coming back from dinner we were freezing. The temperature did climb up somewhat today - to 57!
ReplyDeleteNot that it matters, but I don't think you need the belt w/the print dress. It's so cute & your figure looks great & defined in it without the belt. Ema, I hope you have a fabulous time!!
ReplyDeleteLadies, thank you fore the recommendations on weather and restaurants, they are greatly appreciated.
ReplyDeleteSparkles, I am going to take the dress anyway, last year when we were in the Bahamas it was very cold the first two-three days and I wore the clothes that I had on the flight for lack of other options!
jenny, thanks for chiming in. I am cold natured too, so I am going to take a few sweater options
Dominique, thanks so much for the leaving such a detailed cmment. I am flying American ;-). I always tend to overpack shorts/beach clothes and underpack sweaters, that's why I was considering taking a few this time. If you were raised there you are probably used to the climate but I can feel cold in any weather conditions ;-). I will pack a scarf for the air conditioning, I have a delicate throat, I always get a sore throat in air conditioning!
Thanks for the restaurant suggestions, will definitively check them out.
Dani, when I arrived in the US the air conditioning was killing me but now I got used to it, although from what everybody is saying here it seems that in Miami is worst than in the summer here.
Would definitively love to have a meet up when you come to NUY in the spring!
WFF, I looked up the two restaurants that you mentioned and while I can't possibly take my Italian friends to an italian restaurant (as good ad it can be), the Douglas Rodriguez one seems amazing (even the decor) and just the kind of restaurant that I love. I emailed a friend who is a foodie as well and was in Miami two years ago and she said that the meal that she had at the Rodriguez restaurant at that time was one of the best of her life, so now I really want to go. My husband is resisting, he says that it isn't the kind of restaurant to go with three kids but I think that if we go early it's going to be fine. Can't wait.
And WOW, 40 is cold, I am definitively going to pack a cashmere sweater or two!
gigi, I think you are right, I prefer it sans belt too. Thanks for stopping by
ema, the night we were at Rodriguez, there were several family groups with children of varying ages - the kids were having a great time and the staff was enjoying the small ones as well. What a difference between hospitable Latin Miami and stand-offish NY!
