OOTD: Yellow Against Winter Depression (The Lucinda in Spice Gold)
I am suffering a bit from winter depression, as every year in January, with the difference that usually around the end of the month or beginning of February we take a week of vacation and go to a warm place, while this year we had to postpone to spring break. So no warm sun and sand in view for me for a while, and end of March seems so far.
To fight the January bleakness I like to wear yellow in all its variations and especially that mustard-y yellow that Jcrew does so well. I finally got my hands on the Lucinda blouse in spice gold, that was high on my wishlist when it came out but then slipped throught the cracks of final sale. It was one of those things that I regretted not buying full price: it got marked down when I wasn't paying attention and then I was never able to catch a popback in my size (a 0 or 00). I capitulated to final sale last week when a 0P became available. I usually don't order petite sizes, but I had read that this shirt (that I had never tried on) runs big so I figured that a 0P would be the equivalent of a 00 regular.
It arrived on Monday and the color was exactly what I had hoped for. The 0P fits perfectly, which makes me think that a regular size in this one would have been too big. This blouse has very feminine shape and details and sizing down is better than sizing up IMO as it isn't meant to have a relaxed fit. For example, it is not the kind of blouse that you can wear with the sleeves rolled-up, like the Blythe. I was mostly afraid that it would be too short in a petite but it isn't (strangely) and it stays tucked in with no fussying around (I hate when my blouses don't want to stay tucked in).
I tried it with my glen plaid pencil skirt yesterday but I didn't feel like wearing a skirt in the end and I decided to change into jeans. However, I took many picture with the skirt to show you the blouse:
This is to show you the length:
I loved it with my matchsticks and matching cashmere sweater from two years ago:
I have to say that by the end of the day it was a hot mess (and it wasn't a long day!), all wrinkled and even stained in several spots in the front but this morning I woke up and decided that I wanted to wear my Sunnie pencil skirt, which has the exact same color base, so even if I had put it in the dry-cleaning bin I took it out to see if I could do something about it and wear it again with the skirt. I also have the argyle bracelet in the same color that I bought to wear with the skirt:
Hey, I even have a pair of mustard-y stockings that I found at H&M at the beginning of the season. As my daughter eloquently said this morning this color is "yucky" and is more orange-y than I thought, but they were very cheap and don't look that weird with the skirt:
I had to find something to cover part of the shirt and I decided to go with the fisherman cable that didn't get a lot of wear this winter:
What's your formula to fight winter depression?

I decided to wear yellow today, too!
ReplyDeleteA JC ruffled front tank from 2 years ago; it's definitely perked up my mood.
I start cooking baking and drinking wine to fight the blues. I also plan vacations so that I can think about getting-out-of-here!
ReplyDeleteI plan and organize things like my budget which cheers me up too.
I have the silk blouse in honey glaze from 2008 or so? It is so similar to this blouse, I think I should wear it soon, thanks for the styling ideas!
I hope your blahs leave you soon. Maybe plan your vacation wardrobe, will that cheer you up?
I love yellows in the winter and I also regretted not trying the blouse when it was not FS. I cannot chance it now sInce I am not sure of the fit and color could be a big gamble as well, some mustards look great, but some are hideous next to my face. I like it especially with the cobblestone? cardi. And yes, I would totally wear the shirt again only I am sure it would get very hot and I couldn't get it off ;)
ReplyDeleteI love the colour of this blouse (grabbed one the minute it went on sale...)- it's a great yellow! Very nice with the sunnie pencil skirt, and great with the glen plaid too!
ReplyDeleteGreat outfits, I love the blouse on you. I think you have seen my Carven sweater so you know I love mustard yellow for beating the winter blues. I try to wear brighter colours like J. Crew's modern red to get away from all the black and grey. Sadly, I have no remedies for beating the blues, besides cracking open an icy cold Coke, and buying lottery tickets in hopes of winning the lottery so I can move to Hawaii!!
ReplyDeleteI start mentally planning my wardrobe for our yearly trek to Florida in March. The golden plaid skirt is lovely!
ReplyDeleteColor is one of the things I use on a daily basis to make me happy - a piece of clothing, but also small pieces of decor, other items eg right now my pink leather 'valise journal' from Anthropologie - in my case pink most commonly, but also some other shades. Yellow is supposed to be a very happy shade :) I recently saw that there is a Pantone Hotel in Belgium - there are whole floors where you can pick the color according to your mood!! I totally want to go :) http://www.pantonehotel.com/en/pictures.
ReplyDeleteI also find January a tough month...planning for a trip is always good! :) Or planning your wardrobe as DaniBP suggests.
(oh the Valentines party for your daughter sounds so fun - I want to help!)
I love winter, I'm not liking the lighter nights coming back, I feel all cosy at home at night.
ReplyDeleteAll of the golds and mustards and yellows look great on you, I need to find one that works with my skin tone.
maryeb, yay for yellow!
ReplyDeleteDaniBP, drinking wine to fight the blues can be dangerous ;-). But planning a vacation, or a vacation wardrobe can definitively cheer me up, in fact I just did that!
ajc, good guess, it is the cobblestone cashmere cardigan from last year. It did actually happen that it got hot later that day but instead of the sweater I ditched my coat!
thatdamngreatdress, yes, it is a great shade of yellow. Yellow usually looks great on me (except of the canary, citron-y yellow), so the color wasn't a big risk.
Louise, yes the orange red is another color option that I love to wear against the winter blues.
Sue, I will be going to Florida too (sooner than expected), would love to have your advice on what to pack!
sydneygirl, that Pantone hotel in Belgium sounds fun! Yes, February is a better month than January because of Valentine's Day, it puts a smile on everybody's face, especially kids.
Tabitha, I also feel cozy at home in winter when it's dark outside and I don't like the transitional months (aka spring) when it's lighter later but still cold. I could live with winter and summer only!
