The Last Days Of Sequins

I have to admit I had this post (and this title) in mind since last summer but truth to be told I would have sentenced sequins to a premature death, had I written it back then.
I am quite surprised that the sequins trend lasted so long and that there is no sign in view of them receding from the fashion scene. Personally, I have been suffering from sequin fatigue in the last year or so and I have meticulously proceeded to de-sequin-ize my closet keeping only one black tank and matching cardigan from 2004 (who knew that sequins were already around). I have resisted all the temptations of the cheap sequins, keeping in mind the golden rule that "If you don't wear it is not saved money, is wasted money".
There is only one item that I would have made an exception for, a white sequined tank or tee for the summer. I always regretted a bit the Jaspe merino sweatshirt in the white colorway. Do you remember that one? The reason why I didn't buy it when it came out is that it was expensive and it was merino and we have a very short season to wear merino here, especially a sequined merino sweatshirt.
White sequins are hard to come by. The are usually ivory or what JCrew call "natural", or silver but not white. Last summer a white version of the drapey sequin tank made an appearance on the shelves and I tried it several times (that's when I first thought of this post) but I didn't want to pay $78 for it and it went on sale at the very end of the summer, when I had already moved on. Plus, the drapey sequin tank always felt too clingy to wear in the heat and uncomfortable on my skin.

Joe Fresh came to the rescue again with its reasonable priced clothes. When I saw this "pure white" sequined tee the other day, I knew that I wasn't over with sequins. I love the slouchy fit (that reminds me of the Jaspe) and the fact that the front panel is doubled, so that no sequin threads can come in direct contact with the skin. Sequins are small but very dense and of high quality (aka, not like the ones that you can find at H&M) and provide the white shimmer that I was looking for. All this for $29:

They also had a tank but for some reason the tank was less white than the tee. However, I couldn't leave the one in golden-bronze colorway there because it matched perfectly my JBrand cargos (that I was wearing that day) AND my tweed Sahara jacket (this one was $24). I am almost sized out in tops at Joe Fresh, they tend to run big:

So, are you still buying sequins or the last days sequins have come for you? (By the way, the reference in my title is the movie "The last days of disco" by Whit Stillman, not the book about Pompeii).

I have friends arriving tomorrow from France. They are going to stay with us for a week so my blogging will be sporadic if not completely nonexistent. Please be patient, I will be back soon (with plenty of going out outfits, I have been working on those!)

  1. That's a great looking tee, Ema. The tank is perfect with your outfit, too. Wish there was a Joe Fresh in Chicago!

  2. I'm afraid I'll never be finished with sequins, Ema. And now I'm pining after the pure white sequin tee, it looks fabulous on you. Wish there was a Joe Fresh in SoCal.

The gold one looks great with the honey tweed jacket.

  5. OT: Hi Ema, I know you visit a collection store and was wondering if you have seen the Café capri in pompon jacquard. Can review them if you do? Thanks :)
I love the sequin shirts and wish there was a Joe Fresh around my area.

  7. Thanks for the heads up on these shirts - I had to go to two Joe Fresh locations to find them (thank goodness we have so many around here), and nearly came away with all three colours in the sleeved versions. Managed to restrict myself to just the black and white ones in the end. They do fit loosely, but I decided they needed to be just that little bit slouchy for best effect. Love them!

  9. I got sequin fatigue a few years ago from chasing down the Jeweled Jardin Jacket. Mine now patiently hangs in the closet as an expensive lesson in what happens when a cute idea becomes an obsession. Have you held on to yours? I just went and looked, it seems I still love black sequin tops. Oh, well.
