Talbots 40% Off Promo: My Picks

I haven't done a post on Talbots in a very long time. That's because I completely lost any interest in the brand during the last Fall and Winter, they seemed to have gone back to their grandma style (and also, to be honest, I didn't recognize myself in the models).
But the last Catalog was different, I found myself browsing it much more than the last JCrew catalogs and I was interested in seeing IRL quite a few items.
As you probably know they had a 30% off full-price online promo at the beginning of the week but I wasn't motivated enough to pay the shipping just to try things on (as their sizing can be a hit or miss for me), so I went quickly to a store hoping that if I found something worth it they would price-match the online price. Well no, they didn't but it is for the best since they are starting today a new promo (in-store only this time) for 40% off one fp item (and I think 30% off the entire purchase, I have to double check).
Anyway, I took pics of a few items that were on my "must see IRL" list and I might go back to get one of these during this promo. I didn't have a lot of time so I tried only things I was interested in for myself (except for one that I tried for the fun).

Let's start with the Sailor-stripe halter dress. This dress is a big seller and I can see why. It is very well made and flattering, plus who doesn't like some thin blue stripes. In my opinion this fits like last year Cecelia dress from JCrew. It doesn't look like it in the pics but there is a LOT of fabric in the skirt portion (it is fully lined in cotton), like in the Cecelia. However, it felt very good on and made me want to swirl. The top portion is a real racerback, so what bra wear with it might be a problem and it might accentuate your shoulders. Usually I am a P in dresses and skirts at Talbots but they didn't have a petite size to try on, this is the regular 2. I think the 2P would have been perfect, the regular P was just a touch too long on me and not fitted enough in the bust (but still weareable):

I was surprised at how much I liked this dress on; however, I am not sure how much wear I would get out of this, it seems a bit too dressy for me to wear just for school runs and I don't need another dress that needs some kind of occasion. But I might reconsider if I find a 2P during this promo.
In reality my first choice and the reason why I made the trek to the store was the Sailor-stripe godet skirt. This skirt reminded me of my yellow JCrew pleated skirt with the grommets which is a summer favorite of mine and I see myself wearing it a lot in the summer. I tried both the 2 regular and the 2P. The 2R was a bit too long (it was midi-length on me) and looked a bit dowdy but was flowing more nicely through the hips than the 2P:

The 2P for some strange reasons felt a bit looser in the waist than the 2R (normally it should be the opposite) and was a lot shorter, hitting me slightly above the knee. What I didn't like was that the pleats started a bit more abruptly at mid-thigh, like in a flutter-hem skirt. I don't know if you can see it in the pics below:

Still, I like this skirt, it is very summery and I see myslf wearing it in my daily life. I think that the 0P would have been perfect in the waist but maybe a bit too short (in any case it doesn't come in 0P, apparently).

The next one is a dress that I tried only because it was very Madmen and it's a fun "optical print" and I thought that some of you would like it. It's the Oval-dot dress. Typically this kind of dress with a sheath top and a full skirt doesn't look good on me (they make me look heavier than I am) and this is no exception. This is the 2P:

My last two picks are two tops. The first is the Audrey-collar top that you have already seen in the pics with the godet skirt but deserves its own pics. This top is poly but it is beautiful (it reminds me of a similar top at Kate Spade). I was interested in the navy (because it is perfect to wear with my JCrew big-dot skirt) but it seems to be a store-only color and they were out of both the 2P and the 2 regular. I tried the 2P in the pink flambe which is a beautiful bright pink (a bit like the bright dahlia but brighter). I would have loved to compare with a 2 (the 2P seemed a bit boxy) but I didn't have the time:

I will buy the navy for sure if I find it in a store during the promo. Note that the natural color is much creamier than in the online pic (it's more like a vanilla).

Last, the golden-button caught my eye because it is very Tory Burch-esque, with the golden buttons and the nautical details (like a little rope that is used to close the key-hole). It is very crisp-looking, especially in the white. However, the 2P was pulling a bit at my chest an the 2 regular was overall too big in the body (first pic is the 2P, second and third pics is the 2R). I might get it with the promo though (which size do you think looks better?):

That's all. Are you eyeing something at Talbots? Do you like any of these picks? Are you planning to take advantage of this promo (if you subscribe to their emails you should receive it)? Please share!

  1. I have the same experience with Talbots, I only bought shoes from them in the last year, which can be a very good value and cute styles. I also got a dress last summer but that's it. I saw that halter dress and I agree it is very pretty, but like you I don't think I will be able to wear it much. I do like the white top and I may actually get this one. On you, with jeans I like the 2R better but funny thing, even if I am taller I am thinking of trying a petite version to wear with my Madewell rouge dot skirt, do you think it would work? Thanks for the reviews, I saw and liked that white top in the catalog but I completely forgot about it.

    1. I would get the regular size, I don't think it is going to work with the skirt anyway, it isn't fitted enough for that skirt. You need something really cropped, or really fitted (I have been there with the liquid silk skirt).

  2. I feel the same way about Talbots, so much better for summer. I just placed a large order. Hated to pay shipping but my store doesn't carry shoes so I justified it that way. Hoping the stuff is as cute in-person as in the catalog. The white shirt looks great on you; I think I like the 2p best.

    1. Glad that I am not alone to like their summer collection better. Thanks for sharing!

  3. I am in the same boat as you. I found myself flipping through their latest catalog and more folded corners on the pages I like. I'm in Canada and their shipping is crazy. Just have to wait for a decent promo and I will bite.

    1. I hate paying shipping, I want to live in a free shipping world ;-)

  4. I love how you think out your purchases, I have been trying to follow that and am now buying for my real life as opposed to the one where I go cocktail parties all the time.

    1. But you do go to cocktail parties all the time ;-). Just kidding but I do my share of fantasy shopping, I just try to keep it under control. It is easy with Talbots, I don't really fantasize of being a grandma ;-)

  5. LOL I have to agree with Tabitha, my fantasy world has me attending meetings in business wear and frequenting cocktail parties, yet I work from home. I'm trying hard to follow your lead and buy only what I really need.

I'm in love with Talbots spring/summer line. I did a big order on Monday and got free shipping. (I'm located in Canada)

In the store I bought the paisley blue and white shirtdress--LOVE THIS, Marla dress in green (think that's the name) and a couple of linen sweaters (indigo and grey/natural linen)

I like the 2R shirt on you best, especially with the jeans. The other looks like it would bother you pulling across the front.

Not sure if there is anything else I need to buy this Saturday, think I will be just taking in my bill ::cough cough:: to get a 40% price reduction on my dress.

(Although you may have swayed me on getting the sailor stripe dress!)

PS Ema, don't you think the godet skirt looks like something Audrey Hepburn wore in Funny Face, in fact the way it's styled in the catalogue is so Hepburn.

    2. I agree that the summer collection has many great pieces. I saw the paisley shirtdress and it looks great.
And yes that skirt has a little Audrey Hepburn vibe, I can see myself ridind a bycicle in Rome in that skirt. Fantasy shopping alert!

  6. The striped skirt is really nice, as is the dress. I have attempted shopping at Talbots in the past but it always seems like the inside of grandma's closet with 1980s style decor - perhaps Talbots stores in the US are more upscale and stylish looking? I will try taking another look after seeing these pieces on you!

    1. Same here Louise, the stores are old-looking and don't add anything to the shopping experience IMO (they renovated the Fifth Avenue store and it is slightly better but still has a grandma vibe).
I would gladly shop from home if their sizing was more consistent (I am often sized out, especially in dresses and coats)

  7. Ema, thanks for sharing pics! Nice try-ons. I haven't had time to sit w/my catalog, only thumb thru. I did, however, order 2 pair of white jeans and the super crops in flame. The crops are keepers. The white jeans, well I am on a hunt as they seem to be hard to come by this season. Already sold out in many cases. Talbots is very responsive to their customer base and they've been tweaking fit and sizes each rollout, it seems. I am not surprised to see that a 2R is fitting better for you in some cases. I like that size for you in the goldbutton top. Ca-yoot!

For everyone...if you are in a Talbots store and they don't have your size, you can have a SA call for you on the red phone. The rules seem to be that the SA starts the call to provide the store # & her empl# & then you wrap it up w/your credit card info, etc... Shipping is always free from the red phone, even on clearance items. Funny thing is the style # has to be provided to the customer service agent. I wanted an item last week and didn't have the #. I asked them to look it up in customer service, which they could not, I was told. The SA went to the back to try to find the item so she could get the style#. Meanwhile, I looked it up on my phone and got it. Silliness.

And totally w/Tabs & Urban Blonde on buying for my real life and not what I *want* to be doing. Thanks for keeping me in line ;)

  8. The R fits me better in most of the cases but in skirts and dresses at Talbots because the hemlines are already longer per se. Thanks for the info on red phone orders, I asked but tgey wouldn't apply the promo (silly).
Have you tried the Loft for white jeans? I like their pants, although I think they are almost all cropped. If you want to splurge Paige and Seven have the best white jeans IMO.

  9. Ema, thank you for the reviews! I went in today and tried on a number of things...the only winner was the Audrey-collar blouse, and my favorite color was the pink/black/white stripe version (I already have sleeveless blouses in navy and pink). They didn't have my size so they ordered it (free shipping). Despite the poly, such a cute style!! I hope you find the navy one on promo soon!

  10. Ema, love your reviews. I'm gonna check out Paige and Seven for white jeans--is there a particular style that you like?

Also, perhaps I'm in the minority but I thought you looked fantastic in the oval dot optical dress--it was an unusual print and very flattering, imo.

  11. If anyone finds themselves in the Seattle area, the Bellevue Square Talbots was very nicely remodeled and carries a lot of stock in both petite, regular and woman petite sizes. And it is right next to the J.Crew store! Also wanted to add that I find the SAs at Talbots are very accommodating and will get catalog to honor sale prices and promotions if they don't have your size in store.

  12. Louise@cosmeticbee and Ema,

My Talbots, located in Calgary, Canada was renovated late last year. It's gorgeous all white, white marble, white saarinen table for sweaters, beautiful glass display cubes and feels very sumptuous. Dressing rooms got better lighting, bigger mirrors and are definitely more lux.

I'm quite positive sales have gone up since the reno; I know that my purchases certainly have!

  13. Winter 2010 I bought a TON; this past winter 2011 not a single thing; I did buy the black lace jacket this spring and wore it to a cocktail party a few weekends ago. Also bought a floral blouse and a v neck cardigan sweater. I ordered a pair of their new sterling earrings and they came bent. Crappy shipping. no box; just a bubble mailer!!!!
