One Hundred And Counting

So the task of counting how many pairs of shoes I own proved more difficult than expected. In fact I can't give you a precise number but I can tell you that there are between 96 and 135 depending on how we define "shoes".
Shocked? Well, me too! I would have said 65 to 70, I had no idea, really. Before you start to think that I am a shoe-aholic let me tell you a couple of things:
1) I have a tendency to be a hoarder. It runs in the family, my mom could easily appear in an episode of "Hoarders" and I think she transmetted the gene to me. So it isn't that I buy THAT many pairs of shoes, it is that I don't throw them away. Never. Until now.
2) I think that women in general have a tendency to underestimate the number of shoes that they own and have way more than they think or want to admit. What I am saying is that I don't think I am an exception. Who really counts their shoes? Have you ever tried? It sums up very quickly, you would be surprised.
This was an ideal situation to count them because we emptied our walk-in closet (where all our shoes are stored, except for the few ones that get everyday use and need to be in the entrance closet) to put the new rods and shelves in, so all the shoes that we have got temporarely moved on the floor of our bedroom. Still, I couldn't come up with a definitive number. Why, you ask? It seems easy, like counting to 100.
Well, while I was trying to tackle the task I came across some metaphysical questions like: should I take flip-flops, like Havaianas, into account? I have easily more than ten pairs of Havaianas and similar rubber-sole sandals so those alone would increase my number. In the end I didn't consider them as shoes, technically, for the simple reason that the fact that I have a pair of, say, pink Havaianas doesn't count when I am considering buying pink shoes. They don't compete.
Or similarly: should I count sneakers and fitness shoes? I am in no mean a sneakers person but I have a few pairs (OK, four, two for casual/park wear and two for the gym or other physical activity) that I happen to wear very rarely but I keep because in life you need to have at least a pair of sneakers and/or "active" shoes.
Then I have the shoes that could be described as "shoes that should be thrown away but I can't get rid of": for example, I have a pair of suede sandals with buckles and a heavy-duty sole that are so worn-in that the buckles are actually rusted, that mercury-green rust that comes from exposure to sea water (it looks like I found them in the deep of the ocean, really) but I had them for at least 20 years and they have been a staple of my "adventurous travelling days" following me everywhere, from Morocco to Portugal to Grand Canyon and have affective value, not to mention that they can still be useful if one day we start to travel again to such places. When I asked my husband he said that I should keep them. See? We are a family of hoarders. Another (different) example is a pair of Gucci that I know hurt my feet (they are half a size too small) but I keep just because they are Gucci. Again, my husband was like "You are not going to give your Guccis away", even if I told him that I couldn't wear them without having my feet bleeding (I tried).
The last methaphysical question was: should I include shoes that I have (finally) decided to get rid of (through the JCA Weekly Exchange or by donating them to my daughter's school used clothes sale that is coming up soon) but I still own, technically. I solved this by putting quickly the ones that I want to sell up for grabs on the JCA and donating the other ones before I changed my mind, even if in the end I counted the ones that haven't been sold yet.

This leaves me with approximately 100 pairs of shoes. I had a Carrie Bradshaw moment when I realized that I had so many, you know the episode, when she is evicted from her apartment and has to find money for the down payment to buy it back and she calculates the amount that she could have in savings hadn't she splurged on all those Manolos at $400 a pair. The difference is that I don't have so many expensive shoes, I don't have a single pair of Manolos or Laboutins or Jimmy Choos. I have a few Pradas but they were all bought during sales years ago. And I probably have less than Carrie Bradshaw anyway.

Now there are pairs that I wear more than other pairs, typically flats get worn much more than heels and I tend to destroy and then replace them on a regular basis, like my black Revas. However, I have almost the same number of heels and flats. Why? Here we enter the domain of fantasy shopping: trying on heels and in particular stilettos or other sky-high heels is not the same thing as trying flats. When I buy a pair of flats I look for wereability and comfort, I rarely bought a pair of flats that wasn't comfortable (in general I can tell when I try on and I stay away if they hurt), while when I try heels I project myself in situations that are not likely to happen and I tend to close an eye on the fact that if I can't walk in them, in the end I won't wear them.
I have a few of these fantasy heels and the worst thing is that I keep buying them (in fact I just bought a pair of slingback platforms that make my legs look sooo long but I don't know if I will ever wear. It's bad, I know. At least they weren't expensive, they are the third ones from the left):

Fantasy shopping shoes

In fact now I realize what my shoe problem is. I do buy too many, but I don't feel like it because I only wear half of them. The other half I can't walk in or used to disappear in the mess formerly known as the walk-in closet. I decided that this is going to change now that we have more storage space (I should say, an improved storage space). I finally decluttered and got rid of what I thought was useless to keep at this point of my life and now I have these 90 something pairs to put back in the closet. This is the occasion to do it properly and in a manner that will hopefully result in me getting some more wear out of shoes that I had even forgot I had because they were buried under other shoes.
I would say that 80% of my shoes are in the original boxes: now, not only boxes of various dimensions take up a lot of space but also they make the shoes themselves hard to reach, thus diminish their weareability. For the time being I put them back in their boxes but I have become aware of one important concept that a lady from California Closet who came for a quote told me: boxes are for storage, you can't keep the shoes that you wear on a regular basis in boxes. I had never thought about that but it is so true. In fact she said that I should keep the shoes that I wear in the same closet where I usually get dressed (my bedroom closet) and keep only the "special pairs" and the storage boxes in the walk-in closet (which is more of a storage closet for me as I don't keep my everyday clothes there, while it is the dressing closet for my husband). An interesting concept to maybe think about in the future but that I cannot implement right now, since I don't have any room for shoes in my bedroom closet.

In the new closet I have the space to display neatly and at easy-to-reach level around 40 pairs, while the other ones (hors season) can be stored on the upper, difficult to reach, shelves like you see in the pic below:

The plan is to buy 40 of these Container Store shoe drawers to protect the shoes that are in constant rotation, while having them easily accessible thanks to the drawer system. I have a few of them that you can see in the lower shelf:

I could buy these shoe racks instead (since we used the Elfa system to redesign the closet) but they don't work for flats and I don't want to have two systems in place. Plus the open racks don't protect them from dust, which I think is a necessity.
Now, I don't know what to do with the boxes, it seems silly to keep empty boxes while the shoes are on rotation. On the other side if I throw them away I don't know where to put the shoes once they need to be stored away in the upper shelves. Any thoughts? I am afraid to throw them away and then regret and be forced to buy plastic boxes. I can easily recognize what's in each box so I don't feel that I need clear storage boxes (but I need a few for the boots/booties that don't have an original box anymore).
The other thing is that I own a fair number of leather thongs (like the JCrew leather capris, a step up from Havaianas) and it seems that for those the shoe drawers are a waste of space. I would like to find another way to keep them neatly accessible but I am at a loss. So I ask you, dear readers, what do you do with your thongs? I remember that the Container store used to sell a "flip-flops" organizer, that I think should work for regular leather shoes too but I can't find it anymore.
My husband (who de-mounted the old system and mounted the whole thing in just two days) has been very sweet and gave me the a big part of the closet as you can see (he is keeping for himself the wall on the back that you cannot see) and his only condition is that he wants to keep it clean and pretty (so no shoes hanging in those canvas hangers with shoe pockets).
If you are an expert of closet organization or simply have a few tips that worked for you, please share.

Have you ever counted your shoes?

  1. Ema! I'm laughing here, so many shoes! I've just started to Ebay my really high heels and Louboutins, I don't want to hobble about in 4 inch heels anymore, I love the heel height on the Valentinas which I don't own yet but one day.
Yes, flip flop, mine just lie at the bottom of my suitcase until the next time I'll need them, I had too many so cut them down to two pairs.

  3. It's impossible to part with shoes, especially the older well made pairs. I completely understand. It's awesome that your husband understands your love of shoes.
I keep my flip flops in old shoe boxes - 2 pairs per box. I also keep my shoes in their original boxes bc I can easily identify what is in each box. I would say don't toss the boxes from your every day shoes bc you will regret it when its time to move them up.
    Enjoy your new closet.

  4. Ema, hats off to you for counting your shoes. I am sure I have just as many, probably more. I know I have at least 30-40 sitting in a pile in my basement, waiting to be donated to charity. I have very limited closet space, so I use two crawlspaces that we have in the house for storing my shoes. I put my shoes in these Ikea shoe boxes that are made of stiff poly fibre and the front end of the box is a clear plastic window (so you can see the contents) that opens up and closes with a small velcro tab. Very convenient, and I can also fit about 2-3 pairs of flats or sandals in one box. They are similar to these ones which have a mesh window instead of a clear plastic window: http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/30193375/#/90186391

    Your new closet looks great!!

  5. Hi, Ema! We had a small-ish closet in the hallway to the bedroom, and by an ASTOUNDING coincidence it was just wide enough to hold a 36-slot shoe cubbie storage thing (basically shelves with compartments). After I installed that, I realized I needed another, which just fit on top of the first one. Now I have another 8 clear plastic boxes on top of those. Plus the flip-flops, plus some boots that I can't bear to part with, plus a pair of Gucci sandals from a once-in-a-lifetime sale at their Madison Ave store, which I've never worn, well maybe once. Plus (hangs head) some summer-y things, well, ok a lot, that live out at the beach because they are too open or light for the city. So when I say this post struck a chord, I'm thinking "Chord? Gracious, it's more like a Grand Opera!" Thank you!

  6. Hee hee...I won't even try to count...No doubt about it, I AM a shoe-a-holic!

See my post here about why women need so many shoes.

  7. Tabitha, I can't put them in a suitcase because (besides the fact that they are all full) I need them on hand in the summer!
Hope you don't sell all those beautiful shoes...

    Kate, haha good decision ;-)

A, thanks for the advice, I think you are right.

Louise, yes it is just incredible how many shoes turn up when one starts to count. I am lucky because I have enough space to store them but it can also be a trap because you just keep accumulating them. Thanks for the suggestions, I will look into the Ikea boxes for my flats and flip-flops.

    wellfedfred, I knew I wasn't alone ;-)

my4boys, I read your post, I totally agree!

  9. Ema - you are too funny! DOn't men understand that we need shoes for seasons, running errands, fancy events, for short skirts, long skirts, medium skirts, jeans versus trousers, fancy dressup event, days when we have eaten too much salt the day before? :-) I think your new closet is lovely!

  10. LOL, I have at least 100 pairs. Probably more. Whatever, I am happy to have a shoe for every outfit/occasion!

I have a 15-slot shoe cubby from Target (they come in other colors, too)... well, two on top of each other, actually. I use that to store heels that I wear regularly. My dressier/fancy heels are in plastic boxes from Big Lots, on a shelf high in my closet. They sell them at Walmart/Dollar Tree, too. I'm sure storing them in plastic isn't ideal, but I have yet to see a fabric/breathable storage solution that is sturdy/durable enough and not $10 per box!

I don't have a good solution for flats... I currently have them on a cheap three tier wire rack from Target, stacked on top of each other.

  11. Hi Ema, I'm sorry I am late in commenting. I realized when reading this that I can guess the number of shoes I own but only because I had a major purge this past winter. I did keep some of my fantasy life shoes, 4 pairs. I can't walk in them but I could wear them if I wanted to. They are in my storage closet upstairs, along with my out of season shoes and boots, my current shoes for spring and summer are in my everyday closet along with my wellies. I have shoe shelves that hold 15 pairs of shoes.
I keep my shoes stored in their little shoe bags. Chie Mihara shoes, which are my new obsession, come with these bags. I have purchased some for my other shoes. The only original boxes I have are for my La Canadienne shearling boots and for my Gucci loafers and Manolo Blahnik slingback heels, I bought the designers shoes on ebay and I love the boxes so much I decided to keep them. I kind of wish I had kept the Chie boxes as well because they are also beautiful.
I probably have less than 50 pairs of shoes, including my sneakers and ballet flats.
For the summer I like to have a basket by the front door for everyday lightweight footwear, is this an option for you?
I'll tell you who loves buying shoes even more than me,my younger daughter, everywhere we go she is eyeing up shoes. Uh-oh!

  12. Hi Ema, I've just started reading your blog and it's great! I used to live in NYC and now live in Europe and go to Milan a fair bit, so I enjoy that both are represented in your blog!

I have 21 pairs of shoes, including flip flops, and one pair of slippers. I have a small storage unit in the US, which has a few pairs (5?) of shoes too but obviously those aren't in circulation!

I would have to say, though, that out of those 21 pairs of shoes, I probably wear maybe 15 regularly over the course of the year. There are two pairs I'll never wear but I haven't found a good place to donate clothes to here so they linger.

I definitely have aspirational shoes, like you they're mostly heels. I'm thinking about searching for some comfy heels and getting rid of the ones I never wear. I love that a lot of women here wear heels daily and I'd like to find some pairs that I could comfortably wear all the time.

I just keep mine in an open cupboard built into our front hall and on the bottom shelf of my wardrobe. I don't keep any boxes.

I have a detailed list of my shoes if you are curious :)

  13. I am afraid to count.

I can't begin to imagine how many pairs of black shoes I already own, and yet I still want more. And all the running shoes? And the flip flops? I shudder to think how many pairs are piled in the tiny closet that I share with my husband.

The good thing is, whenever he buys yet another plaid shirt and asks me my opinion, I simply say, "You have your plaid shirts, and I have my black shoes."

    1. Hi Ema, I have probably similar number of shoes and even if I purge my clothes ruthlessly I keep most of my shoes unless they literally fall apart. Shoes are usually more timeless than clothes. I have some pointy toe shoes and boots from early 2000's and now they are back in style. I do have some fantasy footwear, but not too many, mostly heels that are higher than 4 inches, I cannot really do higher than 3.5". I even keep some cheap and uncomfortable shoes that I bought years ago, I don;t know why. I have a shoe closet installed by the front entrance where I keep my most used shoes and another shoe closet in upstairs hallway so I am pretty good with storage (I do keep them in original boxes like you, except for the ones by the front door that are in regular rotation). My only problem is I tend to keep adding shoes to my dowstairs closet and it gets crowded with shoes piled up on top of each other, ideally there should be no more than 12-15 pairs but somehow after couple of months it goes up to 25-30.

  14. I've counted mine, several times throughout the years. I had over 100 at one point, excluding flip-flops and tennis shoes. I had at least 15-20 pair of tennis shoes at one point due to my brother's job. Now that he's out of the country and shipping is high I've paired down that closet area. I have also paired down my "over 100" as well but sit around 65-75 at any point in time. I am lucky enough to have a big closet that I custom built from the Container Store so I can keep all the boxes.

  15. I went high, but I was still off. Lol. I don't count flip flops. They don't always last a full season & they don't take up much space. I put as many as I can fit in in this boot box from Container Store. I also put my boots in those boxes. In the winter I keep the flip flop boxes (1 or 2) on the bottom and boots on the top. Then rotate when the season changes. I ditched my original shoe boxes because they are all different sizes. Having as many shoes in the same size/type of organizer means I can stack high without a problem I use these shoe boxes from Container Store. Your shoe drawers may be more clear/see-thru than the boxes I use. I'm happy with them, though. Your storage system looks really nice.
