Fitting Room Pics Brought You By Sick Child

I had great plans for today since it was my daughter's first day back to school after the (extra-long) winter break: my favorite gym class (a mix of core fusion and cardio, where you really sweat it out) right after drop-off, then grocery shopping and a stop at the Collection store where I have something on hold; some ironing and then as a reward a (long due) mani-pedi.
But my daughter is sick with a bad ear infection so I am stuck home with a grumpy child (who is sleeping now) and I am officially bored to death. So if you want to do a good action today, leave a comment to this post and save me from myself (when I am bored to death I do stupid things like clicking on every possible site until I find something to buy that I will regret the day after).

I had these fitting room pics of a few new arrivals since... last year but it seems that so far I had more urgent things to say and do than posting them. Thanks to my daughter and my subsequent boredom I am finally going to post them. I have a request though: don't laugh. It was snowing outside that day and I was wearing my heaviest clothes so many of these pics mix resort wear with ski wear! Mind you, that could be perfectly fine with Gayle and her acolytes and actually a PS at the store suggested that I pair the scroll print shorts with a cashmere turtleneck. I don't know where you are supposed to go exactly in a pair of shorts and a cashmere turtleneck but it didn't seem to bother her that THERE IS NO PLACE ON PLANET EARTH IN ANY SEASON for such an outfit. Unless she meant that I should wear the shorts with tights and boots which gives me the opportunity to make a digression. Please, PS united, could you give me a break on the "wear it now with boots, wear later with sandal" thing? I don't want to wear summer clothes with boots, I have enough WINTER clothes to wear with boots and I don't even wear those BECAUSE I DON'T LIKE TO WEAR BOOTS in the first please. Yep, we exist, people who don't like boots. See, I am grumpy too!

Now, moving on, here are said shorts in a size 2. They fit pretty TTS and I actually liked the print much better on the shorts than on the Jules dress. The yellow is definitively more golden on the shorts than on the dress and there is little beige-pink (which I find odd in the dress):

I always regretted buying shorts too early in the season (not only they invariably go on sale before you can even think of wearing them but weight fluctuations make them an especially risky ahead-of-the-season purchase) but I am going to Miami again this year for President's Day in February and I am considering them for the trip. I just have to figure out if I can pull them off other than on vacation. They are short but they don't feel that short on, if you know what I mean (I don't feel very exposed, maybe because the fabric is rather stiff).

Next is the Jules in the botanical print (I couldn't try the Jules in the scroll print because they were out of small sizes but I can tell you that it is made of the same thin silk than the Blythe blouse and not a silk twill like the botanical one. It is so thin that the first time that I touched it I thought it was unlined, when in fact it is partially lined in poly as all the Jules. With exception that the poly in this case is the one that mimics silk chiffon and not the heavier one that is similar to acetate. Are you still following?)
I tried this dress on for our friend DaniBP, who had asked me for some advice. As you know Dani ordered this dress and had a thoroughly review up on her blog so I will only add a fact that could be useful to some of you if you are still considering this dress. The Jules, as we all know, is a short dress silhouette but this one is about one inch and a half longer than the scroll print one (and, as far as I know, the other Jules) as I found out comparing the two of them in the same size at the store (it looked longer already on the hanger).
Demonstration: I tried a 00 (again, they didn't have a 0) and while it was overall a tad small and pulling a bit on my hips, it was still longer on me than my Jules in Italian paisley (that I own in a size 0, my "Jules" size). In fact it is almost knee-length on me (as a reminder I am 5'2"), while my other Jules hits me mid-thigh:

In case you haven't seen Dani's post yet, this is a close-up of the print which is beautiful and has much more blue in it than I could tell when I looked at it on the website:

It is partially lined in white poly:

I also tried a few cover-ups but I can't post the pics on the account of sheerness. However, I wanted to show you one that I really liked and is not on the website. It is a long kaftan in lightweight cotton. Completely overpriced at $98 but I would consider for half the price or less (I am trying a XXS):

As you can see from the pic above I also tried the sheer stripe tunic and while I loved it on the hanger it disappointed on. It looked very ordinary and the v-neck is much lower than the tunic above, which makes it a no-go to wear as a tunic over jeans (even with a cami).

Ok, that's all I tried. My little patient woke up so I am going to go. If you have any comment about these that you want to share, please do!

Sorry you are bored but it should make you feel better to know that there are a lot of readers (me included) who wish our legs looked like yours. I wish I could wear those shorts - so I say go for it (orden on-line so you can play the return game when the price goes down)!

    1. Thank you but not all that glitters is old. My legs look much better in pics than IRL, I can assure you. I am not complaining but I am not a model either!
Yes, I will probably order them as ride along if I need to reach the minimum for free shipping. I go to Miami mid-February so I can still return them after my trip if I don't wear them.

  2. Hi Ema! I like the shorts - but I think that you are right that it is too early!

I can;t believe how cheaply they are making them!

  3. It's true those shorts are amazing on you!
And a big waaaaa from me, I'm so jealous, the Jules Botanical looks perfect on you. It's a gorgeous dress. Thanks for trying it on and for the advice you gave
I hope your little girl gets better soon and that you find a cure for the boredom, it's always easier to feel bored this time of year.

    1. Thank you Dani, but again sometimes my legs are particularly photogenic.
Well my cure for boredom was the gym, it gives me energy, it is the fact of being stuck at home that makes me feel bored. I start to run in place and then my day is gone without me doing anything!

  4. Yes, my February boredom is setting in early this year. The last time "the Februaries" started this early, by the time real February came around I had striped hair, and then I colored it red in honor of Valentines Day, a pointless gesture because Himself was working late and didn't know that you could pick up the phone and reach a florist as well as a sandwich shop.

That dress sold out on the website almost instantly. There was one XXS in the small hours this morning. I saw it in Rock Center today (I should get a life), and loved it. It's 100% cotton and has sleeves, in other words, it's something a REAL LIVE PERSON would wear to a REAL BEACH WITH REAL SAND AND WATER. Also in agreement about the price.

I love the shorts on you, they look very "resort-y" but I know only too well what you mean about not wanting to buy summer/resort wear too far ahead.

    1. You didn't, did you?
I have never seen that kaftan online, thank you for letting us know. I hax the same reaction when I saw it (finally they got that nobody wants to wear silk on the beach and that a cover up should, well, cover up). We should get a life together ;-).

  5. Hi Emma,
January blues here too as it's grey and raining in Victoria. We were in Mexico last week so I've been in the laundry room for 2 days and what I give for a blue sky.
Love the shorts on you but I do think that they'll go on sale. Let's face it not many people have legs like yours. so I'd wait it out.
The dress I'd jump on as it's stunning on you.
Hope your little one feels better and the great thing about kids is in 24hrs. they bounce back quickly.

    1. I dread dping the laundry (it's in ghe basement) but that it sounds like at least it is for a good cause, a vacation in Mexico!
I don't like the botanical Jules, it isn't my style at all and I tried it on only for Dani (I am using my New Year resolution as a weapon to fight Crewlade). I really like the shorts but legs or not the price seems a bit steep for shorts.
Thanks for commenting (I extend this to everybody)!

  6. Over here in Beijing, China it is quite normal to see women (not just young girls) wearing tights, shorts and boots ;) I personally don't go for that look... but after being here a year there are quite a few fashion trends that used to seem crazy/outrageous but don't any more!

Both the shorts & the Jules dress look great on you. If you could snag the shorts on sale it would be even better!

BTW - thank you for your blog - now that I'm in China for the next few years and don't have access to a JCrew store anymore your reviews have been invaluable!

    1. Thank you Ingrid! Wow, Bejing must be a totally different world... I was a bit exagerrating because I am fed up with the PS pushing the boots look on me, I know that sometimes it works but you would think that everything works with boots.
Thank you, I will keep the reviews coming (I have a bit of review-fatigue)

  7. Hi Ema, I hope your daughter feels better soon. I notice that little kids bounce back really fast from illness, much faster than adults. The Jules dress in floral botanical print is gorgeous on you. I am dying to know what sweater that is you are wearing in the first pictures with the scroll print shorts - I love that caramel colour but it is very hard in a good quality sweater.

  8. Hi Louise, thank you! It is actually one of my oldest sweater that I bought when I was still living in Paris. If I am not wrong is from the brand Et Vous (which I think has seen better day, the last time that I was in Paris I couldn't find their stores anymore). I don't wear it often because it is very warm and bulky so I take it out only when it is very cold outside but yes it is a very good sweater (even if it has a bit of acrylic in it). The color though is almost identical to JC heather caramel (I have a few cashmeres in that color).

  9. I agree the botanical Jules is longer. I tried it the other day. Cannot get over the price w/that poly lining. The shorts look good on you from the pics. I know what you mean about looking different irl. Don't think I responded about the chambray pjs. I took my usual small. the blue didn't work out for me, unfortunately. You were very helpful & spot on, per usual, nonetheless :)
