Product Review: Collection Silk Cafe Capri in Pewter Paisley (And Advice Needed)

Last weekend I read an interesting article in the WSJ "Off Duty" section about the so-called "New Boho" wave in fashion and how designers and style-setters alike are incorporating bohemian prints and styles into a more traditional wardrobe (like pairing a banker shirt with a skirt or pants that have an ethnical vibe). You can access the article here but you need a subscription to read it (there is also a video-interview about the new "grunge" that you can watch even without a subscription and misses the mark completely IMO). The article mentions brands like YSL and Victoria Beckman but looking closer to us I think that JCrew and Tory Burch do a very good job at the new hobo.
The unforeseen effect of the article is that it made me look at the Collection Café capris in pewter paisley in a new light, probably because I saw them in store the same day. In fact it made me look at them to start with, as I had completely ignored them when they came out. Even when Jenna showed up in pewter paisley head to toe I didn't have a second glance at the pants. But all of a sudden after reading the article I started to fantasize about them. As you know JCrew put out plenty of "crazy pants" this season but none of them attracted me, simply because they all seemed superfluous (not to mention the price points).
So why these are different? Well, because they are grey and I "need" grey pants to pair with my grey schoolboy. I ordered the herringbone café capri back in the Fall but returned them because they didn't go with the schoolboy. At all. I looked intensely in the eye of the grey café capris but they would look too much like a suit with the jacket. I tried a pair of Theory grey herringbone slim pants but they didn't fit well. Who knew that grey was such a difficult color?
Not only these would pair well with the schoolboy, I thought, but they are seasonless because of the silk fabric so I can wear them now (well, not really now with the temps that we are having but in normal winter weather) and later in spring-summer. In the summer I thought, I could try to pull off a "new boho" look with a tee or a paisant blouse on top. Also, I have that heather lace shell that maybe some of you will remember that I love but can only pair with white pants and I thought that they would look great together.
So to the store I went to try them on, the plan being to buy wait for a sale. They had none left in my size, in fact they only had one pair left. What? These are $300 pants! Same thing at the other store. I go on the website and again, only one pair but this time they are a 0. At that point you probably know the "I have to order them this minute before they sell out completely even if I have to sell my liver to pay for them" feeling and I call my new VPS and we place the order. He assures me that I got the last pair (not true, because I had a pair in my cart and it was still there after we placed the order).
I received them yesterday afternoon and tried them on immediately because I wanted to return them (and get my $300 back) ASAP if I wasn't blown away.
Now, I had seen them in store so I wasn't disappointed in the fabric but from the Jenna outfit pics and also the catalog pic you might be wrongly induced to think that they have some texture, like a silk jacquard. They have none. This is plain silk twill. Also, something that I knew is that they are not lined. I am one of the few who like unlined pants better than lined pants because I think they fit much better on me but I agree that for the price they could be lined. Let me put it this way: I have no idea why these pants cost $300, they are completely overpriced. However, they sold out at this price so the market is sort of saying that they were right to price them so high because people bought them (I guess many took advantage of the pre-holidays 30% off promos, but still).
When I put them on, I was surprised by the fit. I was expecting them to pull a bit in the thighs, as the cafe capri, especially the silk ones, usually do, but they fit TTS and GREAT. I also appreciate that they are uncuffed and a bit more tapered on the leg. They also look a little bit shorter than the regular café capris but maybe I am mistaken and it is only because of the silk:

As expected they look great with the grey schoolboy (I know, I know, the golden buttons ruin the total-silver look but I am going to replace them one day):

At first when I tried them with the heather lace shell I was disappointed because the greys are different and clash a bit. However, this outfit grew on me, the pattern of the lace on the shell is almost a textural counterpart to the paisley print and I like the effect:

I also tried them with a white silk blouse, just to see the effect. This blouse (the Harlow blouse from a few season ago) is more ladylike than boho and could give the pants an old-ladish vibe but it is a classy outfit for a cocktail or an event:

So I do like a lot how they look but I am torn for a few reasons. First, the silk seems very snag prone. Like a bad manicure could ruin them. Second, I am afraid that I am going to crack them at the seams when I sit. Not that they are small but I feel like sitting could put a lot of stress on the seams.
Third, well they are $300 and last year I regretted buying the fresco floral for almost the same price because I didn't wear them that much. Fourth, while they pair perfectly with the schoolboy blazer and I ultimately like them with the shell, I don't see that many other styling options than the white shirt and I am afraid they will generate more purchases. Now I know why Jenna wore them with the coordinating popover: she didn't know what else to wear with them! I am kidding, I know she wanted to make a statement, but there is a bit of truth to it. So for all these reasons I am wavering. I am tempted to keep them and try to play the repurchasing game when they go on sale but if for some reason they don't go on sale that fast or they don't popback, I am stuck with a $300 pair of pants. As always, I don't mind to pay full price if it is something that I actually start to wear right away but if in two months they are a third of the price and I haven't worn them I will be mad at myself. Ah, the Crewlette!

What do you think of the Silk Café Capri in Pewter Paisley? Are they on your watch list or anybody else has them? Do you think I should keep them at full price? Anybody else read that WSJ article?

  1. They're really cute on you but for $300, if you're not 100% or at all torn, I would return them. Maybe they'll surprise you and come back on sale at some point. That's happened to me a lot with JCrew.

  2. The fact that you use the phrase "stuck with a $300 pair of pants" when contemplating keeping them says it all. You shouldn't be having these conversations with yourself if you know it's right. I think you like the idea of them, but if they feel too delicate to wear without snagging them on a hangnail... You could just hold onto them for 45 days and revisit the return idea if they haven't already been marked down or worn. Also, if you do wear them and they snag or rip, I'm thinking J. Crew might make good and refund you. I had a pencil skirt randomly split up the back and they gave me a full refund, no questions asked. One last thing - they sold out because Jena wore them in public and the photo went viral. I'm pretty sure they'll rerun these and have them back in stock in every size soon (unless Michelle Obama is seen in them, of course!), but don't hold me to that! The up side is that there will be more crazy pants on the way that we will all NEED, for sure!

  3. I think the pants are lovely. To me, they read as a neutral. I think they work well with both of your tops. I would pair them with colored tops as well: turquoise, yellow; whatever you like to wear with gray. That said, $300 is more than I would pay, especially with the misgivings you've mentioned. It sounds like it would be worth waiting for them to go on sale or for a promo offer. Let us know what you decide.

  4. Well I'm torn about it for you. First, I think they look amazing on you and I think they are very much your style. Second, I personally think unlined silk twill is lovely, these are very elegant pants in a great fabric (though the snagging fear is a factor, I guess you'll have to be careful with them).

You are immediately able to put together 3 outfits which to me says that you will wear them. Also I think that you could wear them now (indoors at least) with a big sweater in gray or off-white/white.

My 2cents: I am leaning towards Keep Them. I think because of all the sales it is hard to imagine paying full price but these seem like a big hit, they are much nicer than anything else I've seen out of J Crew for some time.

  5. Ema - you know i like me some crazy pants. I did keep the purple silk tie pants and was happy with them (I think I caught them for $200 on sale) but the turquoise left me cold. I like these pants. I like them a lot. I do not see this as a pair of pants you would tire of. I could see them with a navy top, white in the summer. I would hold onto them for a few more days and I bet you think of more outfits OR you will decide that no, these are not for you! I think you look gorgeous in them!

  6. Ema, they look great on you. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet.

  7. Hi Ema, these look great on you but yeah, for $300, I can see why you are wavering a little. Since you ordered them over the phone, you have 60 days to return, right? Perhaps hang on to them and see if there is a full price promo or they may pop back in the sale section (it seems to happen quite often with J. Crew!). That way you might feel happier with your purchase.

  8. Return them because they will go on sale soon. Clearly, the price doesn't match the quality (unlined and silk twill)

  9. I'd return simply over the straining the seams issue. This happened to me with my Jules in italian paisley, also made of silk twill, at the arm seams. The dress is not tight, but just from bending my arms I ruined the fabric at the seams.

  10. I laughed at "I have to order them this minute before they sell out completely even if I have to sell my liver to pay for them" because I've been there. If it makes you feel better, I've had that happen when my VPS gets the last of something and it's still in my cart. I think what happens if you try to check out is it will show out of stock. Even if you don't, it will disappear from your cart later that day.

I love them with the lace shell, and in addition to the white and of course grey T and chambray shirt (style gel for the past couple years, lol), black or any bright color top will look really good I think. Not sure if it'd clash or work, even try some subtle polka dots like the polka dot blythe, the pale grey dots version.

They do look goood but completely understand your concerns. Keep for a bit to see if your love or doubt grows.

  11. If you bought them in store, I think you should keep them for 29 days and reconsider, and if you bought them online, I think you should keep them for 59 days and reconsider. Or if you need more time and you bought them in the store, you could re-buy them online so you'd have more time to think about it. I think they are fun but kind of classic because of the colors and they really suit you. I lean toward keep, but you don't have to rush the decision. I'll bet they go on sale before 60 days are up! And on sale, it's an easy decision, keep them for sure.

  13. Ema, I saw these online yesterday morning before your review -- popped back in a size 0 and 2 -- and I was so excited! This is the only new arrival that I was really excited about, but I waffled when it first came out b/c of the price and crazily, the next thing I knew, it was completely sold out at $300! So when I saw these pop back, I immediately put the 2 (only 1 available!) into my bag (I like the cafe capris to fit a bit loose) and went all the way to "place my order" until...

...yikes, $300 for a pair of pants. I had to walk away from my computer and take a break with cup of non-caffeine tea. And I came back and deleted from my shopping bag.

I still think the print is incredibly gorgeous, and versatile, as silk pants go. And, to boot, they look fabulous on you. But $300. You bought those great SW boots for $300 and you will have them forever and wear them often. Such a better buy! Unless you will be dreaming about these, I would return and hope for sale...

  14. These pants are stunning. I don't know how well they would hold up so that might worry me. I think it would look great with black. What about a black cashmere sweater now for winter with pretty silver jewelry. Later for spring any pastel or white. What about a crisp white blouse in linen? These caught my eye as soon as they came out and obviously others feel the same way. Keep them for a while and watch for sale. I think the price is the only negative.

  15. I read the WSJ article (you can read without a subscription if you google the article title and click the link, same with NYT). It was interesting, and I thought the writer really captured the summer city dressing dilemma! People here tend to wear head to toe white, often fairly tailored, in the summer. They always look really good. It's a somewhat similar approach - laid back and tailored at the same time.

The pants, I am torn. They look really good on you when you crop the bottom half of your legs out, but there is something off about the fit when I see the whole thing - possibly something that could be fixed with shoes or maybe if you tucked them into boots. They are a little bit short and a bit too wide at the bottom for you, I think. The proportions are a little off and because of that, they don't have the complete wow impact that I would expect for that price. But maybe you could fix that with shoes or tailoring.

I love the outfit with the lacy top, very cool combo of prints and textures.

I don't know, that's a lot of money for a purchase you're not 100% sure about. But that lace top with those bottoms really has a huge impact.

Would you wear them a lot? Especially considering that they'd be easily recognized as being worn frequently?

  16. Those pants are magnetic! But I'm in Team Dubious.

I think you need to accept the idea that many, many things look fabulous on you. Sometimes, though, just fabulous (I can't believe I wrote that) is not enough. it's one thing to have a seam split on a $19 marked-down wool skirt, another to have it happen on delicate fabric of a $300 item. And to buy something while making plans for what you'll do if it snags, gets holes, pulls threads, opens at the seam or the zip - That's how people shop at GoodWill.

on the other hand, you already have your boots - mine will be waiting for me when I return from trip - and you have a lot of great outfits for the pants - I understand the pull. So I'm recommending "60-day closet probation."

    1. While I understand the point that you're trying to make, I would like to add that that is not really how people shop at Goodwill either. People give away plenty of high quality clothing, as we know from regular "closet purge" posts around the blog world. I wouldn't pay $2 for poor quality either.

  17. Kind of loving them!

  18. Ema, they're lovely on you. I like it w/the two textures as you pointed out. You can also wear them w/a navy blazer and perhaps even your camel ones. I think there are lots of possibilities. And I totally see you in wearing them on vacation in a modern home like the one you rented for your husband's birthday in California? Hoping my memory serves. Anyway, I think you have an issue w/the price. Perhaps if they were even $198 you would not feel so doubtful. From what I know you have strong popback kung fu. You will probably be able to score these on sale if you can wait it out and do the early am time, etc... FWIW, I find that I generally quickly wear item that I really liked/wanted *and* paid a good price for. Things I bought just cuz they were dirt cheap or were full price or close to it, I end up not really wearing. I think because I own so many clothes I tend to feel a little guilty if the price is high. As someone said, there will be more crazy pants even though it doesn't feel like it when "you got the last pair!" lol
