A Few Factory Reviews

I ordered a few things from the factory website last week when they were having their new arrivals "special discount". Ordering from factory is a real gamble, not only because we don't have stores around here but also because the prices go up and down like crazy. I learned from the past that the discount that they offer for a few days on the new arrivals is one of the lowest price you can get before things sell out or go straight to final sale, so it is actually better to buy sooner than later at factory, at least to check the styles out. In this case I also had a 20% coupon that I could use on top of the discounted price so after much deliberating I decided to order the factory version of the cupcake necklace, the factory crochet eyelet top (aka, last year ring-around eyelet top) and the factory crystal stud necklace. Just to give you an example of what I was saying, the crochet top is now back to FP ($58) while with all the discounts I paid $32. You can still get a percentage off with code MOREPLEASE, but it isn't as good as it was last week.

Let's start with the top. I was actually hoping that the factory website would offer a version of the ring-around eyelet top. I own the blue grotto and it was one of my favorite tops last summer. I wore it to death and I regretted not getting the ivory colorway. I prefer my summer tops to be white and that's the reason why I never got the ivory (before regretting it). Well, they read my mind at factory and they offered it in three colorways, including a pure white. I went with my regular retail size and it fits exactly like my retail one, except for the sleeves that are a little bit tight and shorter, if my memory serves me well. The cotton in the sleeves and back is slightly thinner than the retail version but all in all I would say that there isn't much of a difference, so if you missed on this top last year I recommend the factory version.
Here is on me in my regular XS:

In the last pic I am wearing the cupcacke necklace. I was shocked to find out that this one looks exactly like the retail version except for the fact that the stones don't go all the way around, at some point the chain starts so the overall effect is a bit less stunning. Still, the colors, stone size and overall look of it is exactly the same:

For $30 something I will take it! I purchased the cupcake necklace as an early birthday present to myself last year but I didn't know if I would get a lot of wear out of it and it was expensive so I ended up returning it. I am thrilled that they made a factory version of it that looks exactly the same as far as colors and design go! The other necklace is backordered until mid-March and could be redundant because I purchased the spearmint color as well but if I like it enough I will keep both.

And now a factory item that I purchased a few weeks ago and I don't know if I am going to keep. It's the washed cotton army jacket, that appears to be currently sold-out. I ordered this one as an alternative to the more expensive retail military jackets out there and it is fairly well made. The fit is good in my usual XS (I wouldn't size down) and I liked the fabric, which has a subtle herringbone pattern. However, I don't know if I like the look of a military jacket after all. It isn't refined enough to look like a modern take on the military jacket and I have worn something like this in my old days. Basically, it is a military jacket that looks like a military jacket, lol:

I don't feel particularly well dressed with this jacket and jeans like above but I like it over a maxi. I think it needs a light colored bottom (it would look great with white jeans as well):

I had decided to return it because I can do better, I think, but we have just booked our 15th anniversary memorable trip to.... Jordan and I feel like I might need it (although it is going to be very hot at the end of August). Thoughts? By the way, if you have been to Jordan and Amman in particular, I am having a hard time to chose an hotel there. It looks like all the luxury hotels are deprived of local charm and are pretty far from the touristic attractions so I am almost inclined to go the B&B way. If you have a recommendation, let me know. It would be only one night (two full days) as we are spending three nights in Petra.

Ok, that's it. What do you think of these factory offerings? Have you found something at factory recently? Please share.

  1. I'm so excited about your trip to Petra! I couldn't stop talking about it. When we went you had to do the last part of the approach by camel, I was glad for my long pants and short boots.
I loved a few of the things that we did in Amman city proper, but honestly I would hesitate to stay in a B&B. For one thing, you want reliable air conditioning and hot water. Yu probably know this, but after the Lebanese, the Jordanians are considered the best cooks for Arab food, and it's close. I could happily dine on just the appetizers that an enthusiastic Jordanian host sets out. The restaurants that we ate at in Amman seem to have vanished (I have just googled), and I will check with Himself the name of the hotels we stayed at.

For sights, the Dead Sea scrolls were divided between Jordan and Israel, and just the contrast between the way they are displayed in the two countries was startling. I know you didn't say you were going to Israel, but look at the Jordanian share of the scrolls to have in mind if you ever see them in Israel.

Street life in Amman is colorful and fascinating, it starts late in the day and ends later, probably because families like to be led by Dad when they go shopping. And it seemed to me that every other store was a candy shop - probably an exaggeration, but everyone out to stroll seemed to be carrying a colorful bag of sweets.

    Go in peace!

    1. Thank you for sharing wellfedfred. I am pretty excited too, we have been talking about it for months and we almost gave up due to the logistics of it but in the end it was the only destination that both of us really cared about so we are going from Paris where we will drop off our daughter with grandma. We are pretty limited by time in what we are going to see and my husband has already been to the Dead Sea on the Israeli side so we have decided to only do Petra and Amman (we want to unwind a bit too). I was more sad to let Wadi Rum go but after all the landscape seems similar to Monument Valley and we have camped in the desert in Morocco already so I am happy with Petra and Amman.

  2. Ema, thanks for pointing out the factory top in white. I have the ivory original and it's a favourite. What a wonderful anniversary destination. My friend who heads up PR for Ritz in the Middle East always recommends the Fakhr El-Din in an old villa on the 2nd Circle for good Lebanese food in the capital fakhreldin.com. She usually stays at the Four Seasons, great city views (with a city view room) as it is on the top of the highest of Amman's hills (5th Circle/ Jabal Amman). But it's on the edge of Shmeisani, the business district, so not ideal for city touring. I've pinged her to see what, if anything, she recommends around possibly the 3rd Circle and other more central locations.

    1. Thank you so much for the restaurant recommendation GetFresh! It looks awesome, I will make sure to book a table! Yes, the Four Seasons was our first choice (a friend who used to live in NYC moved to Amman a few years ago and he has been the general manager there for a few years) but is too far away for us. It looks like among the big international hotels the Grand Hyatt is the closest to the touristic area (walking distance) but the Intercontinental looks better, especially the pool (important, since we are going in August). I am actually looking at a small but very clean and modern hotel called "Hermitage House" that is a step away from the amphitheater and off the main "stroll" street (Rainbow). If your friend has some insider information let me know!

    2. Funny, she picked the Grand Hyatt because of location and fact rooms have finally just been renovated. She said check that renos are all done, and that their Club Floor could be well worth it. Also, that they still give a cute small camel with Jordan stitched on it? Not expensive or that you couldn't buy it, but your daughter might like if she is not already far too sophisticated for such things ;-) If you choose the Intercon.(also a 15 min. walk to Rainbow St.) apparently it has two sections, so make sure you get the newer "deluxe" tower/ pool view/club rooms. She has to deal a fair lot with security questions to an American etc. market, so she says honestly she didn't check out a lot of smaller places as it's tough to "promote" them. Plus she is a bit of a Ritz lady iykwim. Where did you choose in Petra?

    3. I chose the Movenpick. Again, torn between the Movenpick and the more authentic Taybet Zaman but in the end I picked the Movenpick mainly because I don't want to be 7 miles away from the site. I am planning to take the Petra by night tour so proximity is key. The view from the rooftop bar also seem magic.

  3. Ema, the white top looks sooo good on you! I may have to get that one now :)

I agree that the military jacket looks literally like a military jacket. But it is practical... tough call there!

  4. Ema:
Hi, I would recommend the Four Seasons in Amman. Beautiful hotel and the thai restaurant in the hotel is very good. Be sure to ask for a non-smoking room. In Petra we stayed in a holiday inn - the hotel selection there is very limited and the "best hotels" are the equivalent of a 2 star hotel in the US. It will be very hot in Petra - I was there in March and it was quite toasty. Be sure to get a reputable guide - it will make your visit to Petra more enjoyable. Wadi Rum is about an hour from Petra - you can take a drive there one afternoon. It is basically a very hot desert with a few hieroglyphics that are hard to find.

    1. Thank you for the recommandation Erika. I would pick the Four Season for sure if it weren't for the location. My husband is the type that if he has to take a cab everywhere is not going anywhere so I'd better be closer.
Yes, our friend who used to live in Jordan warned us that the hotels in Petra are "crappy" in general. He actually recommended the Marriott for the views but we decided to go with the Movenpick for the location.

    2. Actually we did stay at the Movenpick - the hotel is at the entrance to Petra. Maybe the hotel used to be a holiday inn - for some reason that sticks in my mind. If you are only in Amman for one night the four seasons is in an out of the way location. We had a car and driver in Amman but the driver's English was very limited even though we were told he was "English speaking" so bring your reading materials for info on the sites. It is interesting to see all the road signs to "Palestine".

  5. Hi Ema, sounds like an amazing trip that you're planning!

I like the white top. I think that the coat is too big on you - belting helps the body but the sleeves are still a little wide.

  6. The circle lace top is a winner. You can do better w/the jacket. It's boyfriend, literally. You want a refined version. You'll find it.
