I didn't think I would find the perfect peplum top at JCrew, as they usually don't do this style well, but I did. I went in last Saturday to check out if there was something worth buying with the 20% promo and my eye caught a top that I had never seen before. It was a sleeveless peplum top offered in navy and a off-white. It looked nice on the hanger, but with peplum tops you never know, you have to try on to see if the peplum starts at the right spot, etc. Well, I am happy to report that this top is perfection, the really nailed it. The great thing about it is that it is a knit, made in a very sturdy cotton (with a 7% of spandex), that is structured enough to look like a woven linen top, but has all the easiness and comforts of a knit.
It is priced at $78 and the style number is 84643. The color is called Ivory but is almost white (no yellow undertones in it, just not an optic white). I went with my regular size, a XS, that fits perfectly without being too tight in the chest:
Side view:
It has a zipper all the way down in the back that is covered by a flap of fabric. I don't understand zippers in the back (impossible to zip up without help) but at least it is nice that they covered the otherwise exposed zipper:
I plan to wear it just like above or with a big statement necklace, like the rose beaded one. BTW, a reader asked me if I am enjoying the necklace but to be honest I wore it only once as the weather has been disgustingly cold and I didn't have many occasions to accessorize (except for the two last nights out):
If you don't open the zipper completely, you can pass it through your head like a regular top (which defeats the purpose of the zipper but, hey, I don't have live-in help and husband is rarely around when I get dressed).
I am not sure that it can be layered, the peplum doesn't lend itself to be topped by a cardigan (simply because you can't tuck it in and the peplum outline will show and create bulk under the cardigan) and it is a touch too long to wear under a blazer like the schoolboy. I tried it with my tweed boucle peplum jacket and the hem is slightly longer than the hem of the jacket. I can still wear it if I really want it but I prefer my jacket hems to cover my tops entirely:
This top should be included in the knits and tees promo until tonight (I didn't check so call ahead if you want to make the trip to your B&M only to get this), which brings it down to $62. For this price is a great top, especially if you are in the market for a peplum that is "barely there".
What do you think of the JCrew peplum top? Are you in the market for a peplum this season? Please share!
HI Ema - I saw this and really liked it, but for some reason did not try it on! I think it looks great and I think I will see if it goes on sale. I thought it looked substantial and not cheap at all and was quite good quality, but agree with you on back zippers - bane of my existence!
ReplyDeleteGlad that you liked it Wendy! I wonder why they made that zipper in the back, maybe there is some sartorial reason related to the peplum that escapes me!
DeleteThanks for the review!
ReplyDeleteI love the peplum top you got, because it looks not sloppy and more like a grown up version.
Very beautiful with the rose ncelace!
Thanks for the tip with the st.james galatee tee. That going to be the next striped tee i will buy!
Thank you ina! I hope you like it, I know it is a pain to send stuff back for you! I washed mine and it is like new and I know it won't develop holes. I just threw away my mustardy vintage bateau (today) because it looked like a piece of gruyere cheese under the arms. I was holding to it because it was one of my favorite tees but I can'go around with hole-y tee shirts!
DeleteForgot to say, youre tweed jacket looks totally like mine, except i dont have the peplum:)
ReplyDeleteYes it does ;-). Mine is a bit heavier and not as stretchy and the weave of the tweed a bit bigger but otherwise is the same (without the peplum).
DeleteLOVE that top, especially with the necklace! What a perfect top for spring. I got the Peony Tee w/ this promo and am tempted by the Jeweled Sweatshirt in white......
ReplyDeleteWelcome back LRA! The sweatshirt is beautiful, I was very tempted but I don't know where I would wear it. Size up if you want to layer, it runs small.
DeleteHi Ema!
ReplyDeleteI am coming to NYC tomorrrow, mostly for business, but we will have some time to shop tomorrow afternoon. I was wondering if you have any suggestions where to go? We have been to NY many times before, but I just don't know where to go that has the most shops in the closest area? 5th Ave? Soho? We mostly just want to go to Loft, J Crew, H&M, maybe Forever 21, Zara and Joe Fresh? Any suggestions would be appreciated!
I would go to 5th Avenue (downtown, between 23d and 14th). The only one missing from your list is Forever 21 but if you really want to go it is a short walk to the Union Square location. The advantage of Soho is that you might discover new stores (but I don't think they have a Joe Fresh yet). Have fun!
DeleteWhat a great top! This isn't on the international site. No idea why, because it looks as if it's a perfect top.
ReplyDeleteI love it with the rose necklace!
Thank you Ruth! It isn't online yet, maybe in the next rollout.
DeleteThank You!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome, hope you have fun!
DeleteI love the peplum on you and it would look great with the freco pants. Never noticed it on the site and that's why I enjoy your posts as you have great style. I just received the Milly Marzia jacket and it's perfect. Thanks for the posts.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the Milly jacket Marsha!
DeleteI hadn't thought of the fresco pants, thanks for tbe suggestion!
It isn't on the website yet, I forgot to specify that.
Ema, I really like this top on you. I looks like a perfect fit and it will be so versatile. It might look good with the jcrew neon tweed pencil along with the rose beaded necklace. I can see it with some cute printed or solid bright capris too or even jeans. So glad you got to meet Wendy. Looks like a good time was had by all.
ReplyDeleteYes, it should look nice with a pencil and also "graphic" jeans.
DeleteIt was great to meet Wendy, she is a sweetheart.
The fabric on this top is very nice. The back zipper was a pain when I tried it on, but I figured it out. Still not sure if the peplum is for me.
ReplyDeleteI really love this top and it looks amazing with the beaded rose necklace. I think I would sometimes want to put a sweater or jacket over it, though, and cannot think what would look right.
ReplyDeleteHi Ema, I totally would have missed this top if not for your review. I will try to check it out in the store, as this is something that needs to be tried on in person (as you mentioned, the placement of the peplum is crucial).
ReplyDeleteI have awarded you a "Very Inspiring Blogger" award in my latest blog post. You have such a great eye for fashion and I love your sense of humour, it is so much fun to read your posts. Thanks for the blog and I hope there are many more posts to come!
Just in case, here is the link to the post here. Cheers!
