I didn't know that I would be ready for Talbots anytime before hitting my 60th birthday, but I must admit that I loved A LOT of items in the Fall lookbook (much more than in the JCrew one) and a while ago I started to check their website for new arrivals and sign up for emails (actually all started when I read an article on Talbots in the WSJ this spring, that featured several look from the Fall lookbook).
Yesterday I had my first shopping experience at Talbots and it didn't go very well. For Talbots, I mean. If you read through the end you will know why. Amusement guaranteed ;-).
I was walking home with my daughter (after dragging her all the way to JCrew at the Rockefeller Center) and she had fallen asleep in the stroller. I was checking the JCA post (do you also suffer from compulsive cell-phone-checking disorder?) and someone (I think it was Gigiofca) posted a code for 20% off at Talbots. Because I wasn't very far from one of the stores in the city (that I know only because I used to live a few blocks away, and not because I had ever shopped there), I decided to check out the new arrivals, hoping that they would have an item in particular that I had added to my wishlist waiting for a code like this one.
So, I walked in (or I should say, I forcefully pushed my stroller and my sleeping daughter in) and after the first impulse to run away from that private club for old ladies (no offense) I thought that I would look around and even try something on for sizing purposes, in case I would decide to order something from the website later on.
The first impression was that the merchandise looked very spring-y. A lot of yellow, green, white and navy blue. Even the red was a tomato red more suited for spring-summer than fall.
Anyway, because I was there and my daughter was sleeping I grabbed a few things that caught my eye and went to the fitting room.
After trying four or five items my phone rang. It was my husband, finally home after a four-day business trip (he was supposed to arrive later in the evening but he could catch an earlier flight) who was asking where on earth I was. Coming ho-ome!
So while I was trying to free myself from a sheat dress that was way too tight than I could have imagined from seeing it on the hanger, a howl came from the stroller. My daughter was waking up and not in the best mood. The howl become a piercing shriek, a cry of pain that clearly had nothing to do with wake-up grumpiness. For a minute or two I couldn't tell what was happening (she was crying so much that she couldn't speak) and I was afraid that someone would force the door to see if I was torturing her (only a lady from another fitting room said "she must be tired, poor baby". That in my mind of worried and guilty mom translated into "What the hell are you doing in a fitting room with your daughter crying like that?") Then as soon as I put her feet on the floor I understood, but it was too late: like a dike that suddenly breaks, a river of pee started to flow from her underpants, dripping through her legs and leaving a big puddle on the fitting room's carpeted floor.
Let me explain: my daughter NEVER had an accident since she is potty trained and we went to the restrooms while we were at JCrew so I didn't think "potty" at all.
Thanks God I had a change with me (when they are in diapers we always have a diaper with us, but I find it difficult to remember to take extra underpants with me) so I wiped her legs, changed her and she slowly calmed down and went back in the stroller (that was the only place where she could go as I had to take her shoes off, because they were soaked).
Now you would think that I would call someone and explain what it had just happened so that someone could come and cleanup or close the room. And that was my intention, I swear to God. But there was nobody around to tell and when I went back to the selling floor everybody was busy and nobody was looking at me and all of a sudden it felt ackward (plus, I was in a hurry because my husband was waiting home). The only guy around was the security guy but it felt even weirder that I tell the security guy that my daughter had just peed in the fitting room (like I was really guilty for something). So I just walked out the store. A HIT-AND-RUN, that's what it was. I was MORTIFIED but now I understand better what can pass through the mind of a normal guy who finds himself in a situation and sees an easy EXIT (just go for it, it's easy, nobody is looking at you). I can't even imagine what they though of me when they found out. If they found out.
So I am not shopping at that Talbots store anytime soon, out of fear that someone will recognize me as the lady who peed in the fitting room and run away. Plus, for the time being the vibe of the Talbots stores is not for me. This morning I went ahead and placed my first order online.

A Few More New Arrivals
A quick post on a (very) few new arrivals that I hadn't tried on last Saturday. I found my "MUST HAVE" item from this rollout and it's a store-only for the time being.
It's a dream sweater (dream like the blend) that is a pullover but it has an opening in the front like a double-breasted cardigan. It comes in the beautiful heather cobblestone, which is maybe the best color this season so far (I know, for us who love muggy and hearty tones). I saw it for a brief moment yesterday while I was at the Collection store to make some returns and I couldn't stop thinking about it. That's my definition of MUST.HAVE. NOW.
Here it is, in XS:
It also come in burnished olive and a pink that I haven't seen IRL. The name on the recipt is "Dream Yoga sweater" and the style number is GY6877. It retails for $88.
I would have preferred if the arms were a little less tight so that you could wear a long-sleeve blouse under it, but the XS fitted so well that sizing up wouldn't have been a good idea and anyway it is going to look great with a tank under it. A few days ago I pre-ordered the Khloe Jacquard Cami in (guess?) cobblestone because I needed a ride-along for free shippinga and this cami was the new arrival that really caught my eye during the first (gasp, we are at the second one already and it's barely August!) fall rollout and the stores haven't received yet (I will report back when I receive it, after the 8/17 shipping date). The two should look smashing together.
I know that there are people who have sworn off the dream blend, but I am a fan. It is very soft (more pleasant on the skin than merino) and piling is not an issue for me. It's a little bit like wearing cashmere but without the price tag. If you have a different experience don't hesitate to share.
Just to be sure, I also tried the new cashmere crewneck in the same color, that was my original choice/option when I started to want something in heather cobblestone, but I actually preferred the dream one over the cashmere (because of the style I must admit). Anyway here is a (partial) pic (this is the XS, I found it a little bit tight in the arms):
In reality I was trying to take a pic of the Herringbone bell skirt that someone was asking about on the JCA and I had regretted not trying on the last time that I was in the store. I really liked the fabric an the color but the length and the elastic at the waist don't work for me (it's too young-looking, even if I know that some of you will say that I can pull off the mini length). Here I was already sizing up to a 2, so don't be afraid to size up, there is room for it.
Last new arrival that it tried is the Lace panel tee. This tee is very pretty IRL and almost worth its $42.50 price tag. However I am incapacitated to buy a tee FP at the moment, I have tee nausea after seeing all those graphic tees languishing for months in the sale section of the B&Ms. Maybe in a few weeks I will be ready again ;-).
Still, this one was tempting, very flattering and new:

OOTD (Medallion Print and Gold Accessories)
Last year Medallion print is one of my favorite summer prints. I had completely missed out on it when it was in store, but I put my hands on the blouse when a fellow JCA sold it to me.
I love pairing it with white pants and golden accessories. Here is my yesterday OOTD:
The bracelet is the rectangular links one from HO 2008. I bought it on super-sale last year on a tip from a JCA who had just returned hers to a store in the city. Well, I NEVER wore it as I always found it a little bit tacky. In fact the reason why I had taken it out of my jewelry box yesterday morning was that I was planning to return it. Sometimes I am like a drug addict who scouts his parent's pockets in search of money to buy his daily fix. The difference is that I scout my closet and the box where I keep my JCrew tickets (that I have recently updated from an Hermes foulard-sized box to a big shoe box, as my tickets where overflowing) in search of unworn stuff that I can return for a store credit. That's where my money is. In my closet.
Anyway, when I found the ticket I realized that I paid less than I remembered, so I put it on to try it one last time and it looked great with the outfit (I apologize for the Napoleon-esque pose, I obviously wanted to showcase the bracelet and I don't suffer from stomach pain as the great man):
Tacky looks definitively better with a tan.

Vacation Outfits (Part 2)
I am going to post the remaining of my vacation outfits before this vacation thing becomes completely obsolete. I hope that there is still someone interested out there! If you have missed the first part, check it out here.
On Tuesday night we went to Philippe's, which is a Chinese restaurant by the famous Mr.Chow. It must be one of those overcrowded spots on weekends but during the week it's pretty quiet and they have a three-course menu worth going. Also during the week they won't refuse you at the door if you come with your three-year-old (in fact we weren't the only ones with young kids).
I wore one of my favourite summer dresses, a jersey strapless by Ralph Lauren. Ralph Lauren jersey (or at least this dress) is very substantial and not clingy at all and I just love the color. I only have a crappy pic of this dress (in front of the Ralph Lauren boutique in East Hampton, by the way):

Wednesday night was the only night when we ate in. We had a monster storm that night and we just went out to get a pizza that we ate in our apartment in front of TV (watching "Legally Blondie 2" because of our daughter). So no outfits, unless you want to see me in my pajamas.
On Thursday night we went to Sag Harbor. Sag Harbor, as the name might tell you, is the only village in the Hamptons that vaguely resembles to what us European think of when we think of a seaside village, in that it is actually on the water and it has a harbour (shocker, I know).
I would call the outfit that I wore that evening "a wasted occasion to wear something else". I absolutely wanted to wear the JCrew sequin necklace tank but I didn't have any bottom to pair it with, so in the end I wore jeans (I always tend to bring too many tops and too few bottoms and in this case the only pair of non denim bottoms that made it into my suitcase were the scout white chinos, that my husband didn't like with the top). This is a "city outfit" and I could have saved it for the city (but I absolutely ADORE this tank, in case it pops back I highly recommend it):
Friday we had rain pretty much all day. We went at friend's for cocktails and then the three of us had dinner at a family-style eatery in Amagansett. I wore the exact same outfit that I wore the Sunday before, with the aqua Piazza dress and the metallic beach cardigan. The only new element was the tan, as we were now towards the end of our vacation. The funny thing is that my friend didn't stop telling me how tanned I was, so that I actually believed her and I managed to get a sunburn the day after, the LAST DAY of my vacation. Apparently I wasn't that tanned. Yet. Again, this outfit didn't get photographed because it was raining and when it stopped raining it was too dark anyway.
Saturday night was our last evening and we went to our favorite restaurant in Montauk, Harvest. As I said, Montauk is low-key, so I dared to break out my fringed tunic and my equally (but involuntarily) fringed denim bermudas. I thought that my husband would be horrified and that he would ask me to change, but he was quite amused by the tunic's tassels. Men!

We left on Sunday afternoon after lunch. Now I don't know why exactly I saved the vintage cotton v-neck tee in neon flamingo (that I had bought exclusively to wear on the beach) for the return trip in the car where nobody could see it. I guess that I didn't want to look like a traffic light on the beach but that's the point right? If you buy a neon-y tee you know that you are going to be seen from afar...
Anyway, here we are, finally home after four and a half hours in the car and at least three hours of my daughter asking if we were there yet (but no throwing up, unlike last year, yay!):
And to all of you who are going on vacation soon or are on vacation right now, enjoy it as it only happens once a year and it won't last forever! And don't forget to take pictures so this winter you will be able to feel the warmth when outside it's cold and grey:

Sunday at Ikea-by-the-Water
Last Sunday we decided to go to Ikea to check out the "big girl" beds for our daughter. Her crib is from Ikea and we have been very happy with it, so we thought that we would look at their Junior beds before ordering one from another company.
We don't have a car so getting there by public transportation is such a hassle (especially with daughter in tow) that it usually discourages us from going. But the (relatively) new IKEA in Brooklyn has a boat shuttle service (a watertaxi actually) that takes you from the Seaport (reachable by an easy, even if long, subway ride for us) and leaves you directly at the IKEA in Brooklyn, that is directly across the dock (then it's only a very short walk through the parking lot). So we thought that it would be a fun outing for a summer Sunday.
Now I don't know what I was thinking when I get dressed on Sunday morning. I wore the worst outfit for this kind of trip. For starters I thought that the weather would be nice and sunny (clearly I didn't check weather.com) while it started to rain as soon as we arrived at the Seaport (linen shorts and leather flip-flops are notoriously not waterproof). Second, my outfit was completely wrinkled by the time we got off the subway. Third, a delicate embroided blouse is not the best choice when you have to schlep a huge IKEA bag (not to mention a bed) on your shoulder all the way back home (because you all know that it's impossible to go to IKEA and not buy anything. Even for my husband!)
I guess that I really wanted to wear my starfish shorts, that I haven't worn that much since I bought them (I took them to the Hamptons but never had the occasion to wear them there). I really like the print on these, it's so summery, and after trying them with a few tee-shirts without being satisfied, I put on my Fiesta tunic and I felt ready to go (or that's what I thought):

Besides the rain (that stopped after 45 minutes or so and gave us a good excuse to have lunch before "embarking"), it was a fun trip. The boat ride is short but interesting and you get to see the Brooklyn docks from an unusual point of view and very close (and of course you still have the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty on the other side). Actually the architecture of the docks reminded me a little bit of the Venice docks (NB: my husband doesn't agree).
I didn't have my camera with me and the battery of my phone was slowly dying and I really regret not taking a pic of IKEA-by-the-Water as we were approaching it (it looked a little bit like a mirage), but I managed to take a few pics in front of the watertaxi after disembarking at the Seaport. You will notice the huge IKEA blue bag hanging from my shoulder. I was carrying it because my daughter fell asleep in my husband's arms on our ride back to the Seaport (as you can see she is sleeping in the stroller), but after these pics HE carried it (too late for my blouse though):
We didn't buy the bed but we bought two cute bedding sets for her future bed, a pillow, a stool and a stuffed animal. As I said, impossible to leave IKEA with free hands.

JCrew New Arrivals: Fitting Room Pics
Good morning! I had planned to post the Part 2 of my vacation outfits today but I managed to visit a couple of stores this past weekend so I am going to post the pics with some of the new arrivals instead. I must say that there is nothing so far that I have to have from this rollout besides maybe the new toothpick twill pants that look AMAZING. Enjoy!
First the only new tee that looked kind of interesting was this one. It also comes in silver. It's slub cotton and I thought that the fit was big but I found out later that I was as trying a S here and not an XS:
The pants that I am wearing with the tee are the new Waverly chinos. I don't need another pair of chinos and I have tried them only for the blog (I like the scout better). Here I am wearing a 00 and if had to buy a pair I would go with a 0, as there were too snug in the waist/hips. All in all I would say that hey run TTS:
Here am I ready to enroll in Army. The jacket is the Solid Ristop Field Jacket. Can I say boxy (they say "shrunken fit" on the website?) However, I must say that I didn't notice that the waist could be adjusted by pulling on the inside drawstring:
Another jacket that I didn't like, the Solid knit Thandie jacket. Besides the fact that as everybody was lamenting is unlined, the sleeves were too long on me and it didn't fit quite right in the shoulders:
And the last jacket that I tried, the Waxed utility jacket. This is a good alternative to the Downtown filed jacket but it is a little bit oversized:
Let's move on to something more feminine and work-appropriate like the Kalista cami. With the collar closed it looks in anything like the cami on the website and I even thought the model must be wearing the Kelsey in the pics, but after closer inspection I think that it the same cami. In my opinion this is a hot mess, unless the collar is really supposed to be worn open all the time. I am wearing a 0 but it also comes in petites. By the way, Kalista means "most beautiful" in ancient Greek in case you are wondering. (And I haven't googled it, I promise. It's rare that I can show off my ancient Greek ;-)):
The skirt is the in-store only lace overlay skirt that you have seen on Dinagideon in this post. I had high hopes for this skirt but besides the fact that I have nowhere to go in it, I think that it's a tad overpriced and it is too long on me. If I am not wrong it is a little bit stretchy so I would size down if you want to call a store (the style number is 28947, courtesy of Dina, as I forgot to write it down). You can see it better in this pic:
You are going to laugh at the next one. It's the Honore dress. What can I say? Good for prom night (maybe)! By the way, you all know that I am only 5'2", right?
And another black dress, in-store only. This is a cotton eyelet dress, more suited for summer than fall. I didn't like the fit at all. It retailed for $128:
Speaking of super-short, this retail-only velvet mini is ridiculously so. And you know that I can wear short skirt, but this one is sized for crewcuts:
The top is the Sparkle waves henley in blush stone. This henley is very cute (fits TTS) and it also comes in another in-store-only sort-of-bronzed-twig color that was terrific.
I had tried the same skirt the day before at the Collection store. I really wanted it to work because the color is TDF, but as I said it's too short even for me. Here I am trying it with the Carmichael plaid popover, which is one of the few things that I really liked and I think I am going to buy at some point. The fit of the popover is relaxed but still feminine (unlike the summer Sconset plaid shirt). I apologize for the pic, taken with my phone:
And yes, my daughter was trying to roll the fitting room rug (that's why I really can't try a lot of stuff when I am with her).
Another thing that I liked, but didn't feel like I have to have is the quite popular Zip-side sweatshirt. I think that the fabric was a little bit rough but there is another (softer) version in store which has a blue undertone. It is very fitted in the body and arms (here is an XS):
The price of this in-store version is $68 and the color code is HMI.
One of the new arrivals that I really wanted to try is the Microspun cowlneck tee. I was a little bit disappointed in this one: it's thinner than I thought and the cowlneck is wrinkle-prone. I tried the black and the blush stone in XS. Here is the black:
And here is the blush stone, that didn't wowed me as I thought:
On the other side, I really liked (quite surprisingly because this kind of tank is usually cut too low for me) the Microspun pocket tank. Here is the warm taupe in a XS (as you can see is not too low):
And now the two items that really wowed me.
First wow for the totally superfluous but absolutely beautiful Silk and sequin scoopneck tee. I need this top like a bullet in my head as they say, but it is stunning in person (I hadn't noticed at all on the website) I would like to get it at some point when it goes on sale. They only had the almond in store, but I would probably prefer the olive one:
The sequins are sewn in a way that gives the impression of a flower pattern, really beautiful:
Second WOW for the new Premium twill toothpick pants. First of all, I found out that "toothpick" doesn't necessarly mean "cropped" (I thought that toothpick was always a cropped style) and these are not. Second, they are really soft and the fit is amazing. Third, they come in this beautiful dark green which has the DFO color code (which used to be dark fog, but this is definitively a green even if it might look grey on your monitor).
Because the twill is softer than the denim and cord fabrics, I sized down to a 25, while I am usually a 26 in toothpick so you should probably size down too:
I have been good and I didn't buy anything but I think that I am going to get these, also because I can wear them right away (or at least when it gets a little bit cooler).
What are your thoughts on these new arrivals? Did you buy anything yet? Any must have for you? Do you share my enthousiasm for the new toothpick (in case you have tried them on)?

First the only new tee that looked kind of interesting was this one. It also comes in silver. It's slub cotton and I thought that the fit was big but I found out later that I was as trying a S here and not an XS:
The pants that I am wearing with the tee are the new Waverly chinos. I don't need another pair of chinos and I have tried them only for the blog (I like the scout better). Here I am wearing a 00 and if had to buy a pair I would go with a 0, as there were too snug in the waist/hips. All in all I would say that hey run TTS:
Here am I ready to enroll in Army. The jacket is the Solid Ristop Field Jacket. Can I say boxy (they say "shrunken fit" on the website?) However, I must say that I didn't notice that the waist could be adjusted by pulling on the inside drawstring:
Another jacket that I didn't like, the Solid knit Thandie jacket. Besides the fact that as everybody was lamenting is unlined, the sleeves were too long on me and it didn't fit quite right in the shoulders:
And the last jacket that I tried, the Waxed utility jacket. This is a good alternative to the Downtown filed jacket but it is a little bit oversized:
Let's move on to something more feminine and work-appropriate like the Kalista cami. With the collar closed it looks in anything like the cami on the website and I even thought the model must be wearing the Kelsey in the pics, but after closer inspection I think that it the same cami. In my opinion this is a hot mess, unless the collar is really supposed to be worn open all the time. I am wearing a 0 but it also comes in petites. By the way, Kalista means "most beautiful" in ancient Greek in case you are wondering. (And I haven't googled it, I promise. It's rare that I can show off my ancient Greek ;-)):

You Need These Shoes
If you have been reading my blog for a while you know that every once in a while I cheat on JCrew with the Gap (if Mickey knew!)
Two days ago I was in to make a return (a swimsuit that I had bought for my husband and he didn't like, as 99% of the stuff that I buy for him). It was a Wednesday and I had one of those Wednesday 40% off coupons valid on one full price item that I generally spend on stuff for my daughter. But this time I spent it on a pair of shoes for myself.
If you have been reading my blog for a while you also know that I like Tory Burch shoes and I have luxury tastes when it comes to shoes. I have been tempted to buy the Eddie flats in Royal tan but then decided to save my money for the Sallies (that as you know I have bought in the classic navy). Well, the Gap came up with the perfect Eddie knockoff, the City flats that come in an array of colors including an in-store only tan that looks exactly like the Tory tan:
Not only these are much more affordable of course ($39.50 but I paid $24 with the coupon), but they have a padded sole that is actually better than the unpadded one of the Eddies. The leather (yes, they are real leather) is buttery-soft and they come in a very chic pouch (in the same color) for easy transportation:
I tell you, they are the perfect foldable flats: anybody needs a pair of these, especially if you commute or travel frequently (I generally travel in my Revas but I am going to switch to these for my next trip to Europe in a few weeks).
Size-wise I bought my regular size, even if Gap shoes tend to fit big (I was sized out of the equally fantastic ballet flats this spring). However, since these come in half sizes (bonus), you can order one half size up if you want to be sure that the elastic is not too snug in the back (mine is not even in my regular size but I know that people often complain about this).
I think that the tan color is terrific (there were a very few left in my local store), even if going towards fall you may want to choose the purple, black or the in-store only navy or grey (I am probably going back and get another pair in navy the next time that I have a coupon available).
If I haven't convinced you, maybe the enthusiastic reviews on the Gap product page will. And if you live near a Gap (who doesn't?), check them out as soon as possible before they sell out (especially if you like the tan color or the pink).
If you want to stick to the original Eddies (which are actually already a knockoff of the impossibly expensive Lanvin flats), they now come in a new patent leather for fall.
