By Popular Demand: the Madewell Pemberly Blouse

Yesterday I was on the JCA and the discussion shifted from JCrew to Madewell, and in particular to Madewell silk blouses. I have a Madewell silk blouse that I bought back in October and a few people asked me to post pictures of it, so here we go.
My blouse was called "Iris" and it was marketed as part of the Alexa Chung for Madewell collection, but as a matter of fact Madewell is currently selling an identical blouse (only in different colors) under the name "Pemberly", that you can all see (and eventually order) here (but there is also a plaid version here.

I immediately fell in love with the semplicity and feminine details of this blouse (that I missed in the blouses at JCrew) but when I noticed it it was already too late and almost sold-out in all the sizes (like pretty much everything from the Alexa Chung collection). My first choice was a nude color called plaster but it was sold-out in small sizes, so I decided to get a brownish color in a S, after seeing it IRL in the store (I don't remember the name of this color but you will see it in the pics). A few days later the plaster one popped back in a XS, so I ordered that one too, thinking that I would return the brown one.
Now I thought I had saved the pics of the XS in plaster but I looked everywhere on my computer and they are gone. So I only have the pics of the S in the other color, which is the one that I ended up keeping.
The only thing that I can tell you is that the XS fit exactly like on the model (just try to picture a lighter color, similar to the Jcrew rose dust):

but I decided to return it (even if it was the most lovely blouse in the most lovely color) because it was too short to tuck in. I know myself and one of the reasons why I don't buy/wear this kind of blouse very often is that I get easily annoyed when they won't stay tucked in and I know that it would have driven me crazy and eventually not get worn. It was also a little bit on the smallish side around the chest/body and wouldn't have allowed an extra pound or two.
The brown one (aka the size small), even if perfect in the shoulders, was much longer and "tuckable" but the real difference between the XS and the S is in the sleeves. The sleeves are MUCH bigger/longer in the S and in fact they can't be defined as "3/4". Also, the silk (crepede chine, I think) is a little bit on the shiny side in this color (and I think in bright colors). However, it was very flattering on my skin tone and it was a perfect fall color (as opposed to the plaster one, which was more of a spring-y color and washed me out a little bit), so I decided to keep it.

Here it is:

It has adorable brass buttons at the collar and sleeves (detail that completely sold me on the blouse):

I have worn it plenty of times in the fall, under cardigans and jackets before it got too cold to even think about wearing something silky. BTW, It is dry-clean only (bummer, I know).

So the bottom line is: if you want to tuck it in I would size up, but if you can live with a blouse that falls out of your bottom get the small size as it has more character (it is made to just fit IMO).

Do you have the pemberly or the Iris blouse?

  1. Hi! Somewhat new reader :) That picture of the bright pink Pemberly sold me. I immediately went to the Madewell site and ordered it! There was only one XS left and I'm crossing my fingers I don't get a cancellation email that I've become so accustomed to from J. Crew! Thanks for the pics and review!

  2. Ema, thank you SO MUCH for the IRL pics & review! The blouse is lovely on you; I can see how it would look great w/layered necklaces since the buttons are hidden & won't distract.

I usually wear a 2 in JC perfect shirts, so should go with the XS or S? I do have broad shoulders, so I didn't want it to be tight there or across the bust.

Will be snagging the ivory as soon as a promo hits! Thanks again, & love your blog! Enjoy your holiday getaway.

  3. Ema, thank you for posting these pics!!! If you can wear a small, I'll probably need a medium... good to know. I am a 6 in J.Crew shirts. What a gorgeous blouse... I'll be waiting for it to go on sale!

  4. Hi Ema -

Off topic but hope you can help me with the fit of the Elena dress. It looked amazing on you and I would love to get it now that it is on sale. How if the fit thru the arms and shoulders? This year a lot of things were cat small i.e. the brocade top and I am trying to decide between a 4 and 6. Also do you think the dress could be taken in if need be?

    Thanks for your help.

  5. Jackie, yay! Let us know if you like it when you receive it.

Connor, I would go with a S, the XS runs a tad small IMO.

Em, yes, I would say you need a medium in this.

dcgirl20024, it is definitively cut small through the shoulders. You will probably be safe sizing up. Taking it in is going to cost you IMO because there are three layesr of fabric and the result is not guaranteed.
