There is another zebra in town

Last Thursday (when I visited the Soho store and tried the cargo pants) was the first real day of spring in NYC, a warm and sunny day, so I decided to took my zebra (tee) out for a tour and a little social experiment.
I have to say that I had enough time to think about how I was going to wear it and there aren't tons of options (colors are limited to black, gray and white and it has a rock&roll look that makes jeans almost mandatory).
It was warm compared to the days before but still in the low 60s, so I couldn't wear it alone. Here is how I've layered it, step-by-step (the jeans are from the Gap and it was the first time that I wore them as well. They are very soft and I love them):

Then I threw on my Michelle cardi in dark charcoal:

And I finished adding my Zara windbreaker (the color is between a military green and gray):

By the way, I love the Zara windbreaker. It's from the current collection and I have it in navy too, which is a little bit more elegant (it retails for $99). I really couldn't decide between the two colors so after buying the navy one I called my mother in Italy (where Zara is usually cheaper) to buy me the green (she loves to go shopping for me).

Then I wore my aviator Chanel sunglasses as a final touch, put the baby in the stroller and got out of the apartment. I was half expecting people to nod in sign of recognition but apparently not everyone in the street is a JCA (how suprising).
I knew that in fancy Soho people would fake indifference anyway. However, I was a little bit disappointed that it didn't create curiosity or any reaction when I wore it to the playgroung in the afternoon (my playground friends didn't make any comment and the other people didn't even smile, which is the effect that I was hoping for). I think that the whole point of having this tee is to have fun with it, which includes people somehow reacting to the fact that I'm wearing a zebra. I guess that if I had walked in the JCrew store (the one where they know me, because in the Soho store no reaction as well), they would have probably greeted me with some "How cool your zebra tee", but it's like writing a book and having only your friend and family to read it.

I'm going to give it another try, but I start to wonder if it was money well spent. Maybe I should have gotten the rosette tee instead of this one. Well, at least my daughter loves it and says "Mama zebra" every five minutes.

Have you the zebra tee? What is the people reaction when you wear it?

  2. You look so sweet and I love your nickname.

Have you thought about pairing it with something for a pop of color? Maybe the shoes, the jacket/cardigan, or even a pair of pants? I often will use shirts like the one you bought to show off my colorful pants or skirt but have the outfit toned down a bit by the neutral color of the shirt. Of course there is a big sequined zebra on it...but at least it is in black and white!

Just some musings on my part!

  5. Very nice. I have a short trench (similar to travel trench) that I bought at a Zara in Italy last spring. The quality is great and I wear it all the time. It was only 39 euros.

  6. You look great! I have this zebra tee too & my 2 kids LOVE mine as well! I have only gotten "comments" when I was in a J.Crew store! As long as WE like it (& our kids), that's all that really matters! Polyvore has lots of ideas of different ways to wear this tee too!

  7. So you are the one I saw at the Soho store with the stroller. I bought the remaining small zebra tee in the store after seeing you! I too feel ambivalent about it but with the 25% off, it's a good collectible item. I wore it yesterday during our family's easter lunch with a black Lea cardigan and I thought it looked nice.

  8. First, a belated Happy Easter to everyone (I always feel a little bit weird the Monday after Easter because in Europe it's a bank holiday and in Italy we call it "Pasquetta", that means "Little Easter")

Harvill, the jeans are a "Limited Edition" and the ticket says "Crwford stlg" which probably means "Crawford Straight Leg" (they are definitively straight leg). The style number is 900267 and the original price was 59.50 Hope it helps!

Dinagideon, I tried to pair it with a bright bottom but nothing in my closet inspired me but I was thinking of red/orange as the only possible alternative color. However, now that I think abpout it, I have a pair of yellow jeans that I could try the next time. Thanks for the suggestion.

Anon, Heidi and MMM, yes, it's impossible to resist my little one calling me "Mama zebra", it's too cute and it's worth the price of the tee ... She also wants to kiss it (she is in a phase where she wants to kiss everything, especially if it's an animal, real or not).

Susan, I used to buy a lot at Zara, especially when I lived in Europe where it's very cheap. I still go there from time to time but don't buy that much any longer. I guess that I have replaced my habit to buy at Zara with my habit to buy at Jcrew.

Maria, what a coincidence! I can't believe that you saw me and you're reading this blog. I saw the tee in the store, probably in your hands! Anyway, with the 25%off it's definitively a good buy, you are lucky to find one to buy with your card.

  10. Hi Ema! You look great in the tee. This is almost the exact same way I wore my Zebra tee last week...great minds and all, ya know. ;) I didn't get much of a reaction, either but my boys love it and so do I. :)
