Movie Night Outfit

On Saturday night my husband and I went to the movies. This is the first time since our daughter was born THREE YEARS AGO that we pay a babysitter to go to the movies (we went a couple of times when my mother in law was here). The fact is, we never found a movie that in my husband's view was worth paying a babysitter to be seen. He can enjoy a good drama or art movie but when it comes to actually choose something to see it's like nothing is good enough for him. I, on the other side, am a movie junkie (and I go to the movies alone or with girlfriends whenever I can) but I cannot see an action movie without falling asleep. I immediately loose interest and I cannot follow the (simplest) plot. I know that action movies are made exactly to dispense the viewers from using their brain while watching, but apparently it's something that I can't do. So thank you Christopher Nolan for coming up with an action movie where brain activity is actually required.
Yes, we went to see "Inception". Not exactly mind-bending as some reviewers said (I think that the "Memento" from the same director, was more successful in mixing the different levels of reality, so that you could never tell if you were in the present time or the past) but certainly WAY above your average blockbuster summer movie. Not to mention the performance of a quite inspired Leonardo DiCaprio and the hypnotic Marion Cotillard.

Anyway, even if we were just going to the movies, it was a special occasion and I wanted to dress up a little bit. But we had also planned to have a bite before the movie at the newly opened "Shake Shack" in our neighborhood (a burger place with incredible lines if you have never heard about it) and I didn't want to feel overdressed.
So I wore my Drexel plisse skirt the "cool way", with a tee and flats and golden accessories. It turned out to be one of my favorite outfits ever, also thanks to the Sequin Peek-a-Boo sequin tee that I had bought earlier in the afternoon at the Loft with the F&F coupon. The website pics don't do this tee justice. The detail of the sequined pocket is really nice and sparkling and even if we have seen sequined tees before, this one is very well made. At 19.50 before 30% it was also a very good deal (but it's now $15 on the website) and I bought it in the fall olive color, a color that not only is very flattering on my skin tone but will transition very well into fall:

Here is the entire outfit with the accessories (yes, I wore again my tacky bracelet, which is quickly becoming my favorite summer bracelet):

I also wore the small Thompson tote in gold (not pictured). When I go out with my husband I rarely take a bag with me but because I am always freezing from the AC at the movies, I needed it to carry the scalloped zipper cardigan in black that I bought during FS (I would have worn it in the street because it really completed the outfit but it was too hot):

Have you seen "Inception"? Did you like it? Do you have any of the items in this outfit? Please share!

Have a good start of the week!

  1. Very cute movie outfit! Well Dumbo here got a bit lost during that film, it was ok, not really my cup of tea but hubs loved it. I couldn't believe how expensive it is now to go to the pictures, pfft not worth it!

  2. I loved Inception but I was in the camp of practicality when it came to the ending...my hubby of course was the opposite, all conspiracy theories, etc.

I remember being FORCED out of the house to go see a movie when CW was barely three weeks old, tortured me but in the end was probably good for me.

We have grandparents locally so we never pay for a babysitter. I anticipate if we had to pay for a sitter we would. never. get. out.

I love the skirt, one of my absolute faves to wear and to see on others.

Speaking of skirts, the sequinned bell skirt I bought at J. Crew this weekend is not wool...some sort of synthetic blend...yet another reason that it is much less expensive than the similar-looking Collection piece!

  3. I love that outfit: the combination of olive and black is just lovely, especially with the gold accessories.
We went to a movie this weekend too: Despicable Me (yes, a kids movie, we had our 8yo with us!)
Well, it was pretty fun except that I drank my first Coca-Cola in about 5 years and I was up all night from the caffeine.
I would really like to see Inception, with no soda.

  4. Ha! Planning on a movie date night w/ my hubby soon, haven't been to movies in at least 3 years (before kids!) so this should be fun. Love the outfit. Very classy looking, yet casual. I will have to check out that tee, i love the color and idea of it!! Was it 19.50 in stores?? Online it is showing full price at 29.50.

  5. Tabitha, thanks. Well, add to the price of the ticket 4 hours of babysitting: you better go and see a good movie!

dinagidon, I must have a high level of male hormones because I am always the one who comes up with big theories. I just love brainy movies...
Yes, the need of babysitting makes the whole going out thing a lot more complicated, besides the money factor. First, in that you can't really decide at the last minutes and also you need to find someone whom you trust AND is available that night.
Thanks for the info on the skirt!

DaniBP, wow, five years without drinking Coke? I think we drink a bottle a day in our household (but only Diet).
Actually I can't wait for my daughter to be old enough to come to the movies with me/us. Some of my friends took their three-year-old to the movies already but I think that it's a little bit early. Probably next year!

mrs.anketell, yes it was chic and casual. The tee shows up FP but with a red note that says "Special value $15", so it's probably a promo. It was $19.50 in store.

  6. Inception was a great movie! I think I have a bit too much of a nervous disposition for that kind of film though because by the end of it I had practically cut off circulation to my boyfriend's arm from squeezing it so hard. Hah.

Love the outfit! That sequin tee is adorable, and so reasonably priced compared to the ratty JC tees are somehow worth $40 because they have five sequins attached to them.

  7. You look fantastic! Simple & chic but dressy/casual.
I love the Drapey Plisse. Same fabric as the Curators and Studio jacket (if that helps anyone out) but the price I paid--all of $20 couldn't be beat! I haven't worn mine as I think I am going the route of a tights girl with this one. It is very short on me and not sure that's appropriate at my age!

My hubs and I really enjoy movies but mostly wait to see them at home via pay-per-view/cable in the comfort of home. We probably see more of the newly released kid/family movies.

Babysitting does tack on quite a bit to a night out to dinner and a movie. Speaking of which..how DOES one find a babysitter in NYC? I've always wondered. I guess word-of-mouth?

  8. Andrea, yes the sequin tee is adorable and a good price right now (although it was $30 FP).

sweetsy, thank you! Isn'it the best skirt? I think that it was worth FP but I too endedup re-buying it for a lower price($29.99 if I am not wrong). I couldn't believe that it hadn't sold out!
Don't even get me started on how hard it is to find a babysitter in NY!
