OOTD Challange: How to Wear Optical White?

I have this little white dress by Calypso that I thought would be a great summer staple when I bought it (in the cold winter I must say) but as a matter of fact I never wear. Why? Well, because it's too...white.
So yesterday I thought that I would give it another try and wear it to a playdate, leveraging on that little bit of tan that's left.
It seems that it's never the right moment to wear this dress. For starters, it's silk, and not a breezy habotai silk, but a pretty heavy Dupioni silk, the kind of silk that makes you sweat. I have it in another color also (a berry color) and even if it's easier to wear, I never go out in it on a hot summer day because I immediately get the sweat stains under the underarms. With the white this isn't an issue at least but there are other issues.

Total white is a difficult look to pull off and this dress is whiter than white. It's almost fluorescent white, due to the shine of the fabric. Plus, I always feel like a little communicant when I wear it, probably because the style of the dress is very chaste. And needless to say, you need to be tanned to wear this kind of white.
So the only way to wear it is to accessorize it so as to break the total white scheme and the communicant feeling. But accessorizing a white dress is no easy task.
Your only allies are necklaces and belts (a cardigan is not even an option in 100 degrees heat).
I have a few colored necklaces and probably a turquoise or coral one would work better. Anyway here is what I have and tried to play down the white of the dress.

First option, the paisley blue necklace from summer 08:

It's a little bit "Greek parade", what do you think?

Second option, with the bubble necklace in soft violet:

I like it (even if the contrast is subtle) but the bubble necklace is too high maintenance for my day lifestyle (God forbid that my daughter or one of my daughter's friends pull on it).

Third option, with a Loft necklace that is technically silver but I thought would work because long enough:

The truth is, this dress looks better when belted, so I belted the last outfit:

But less is more, isn't it:

Another belting option, but more for the evening or cocktail hour, is this Zara elastic belt with faux-rhinestones:

And with a Calypso sash belt that I had bought to wear with the other dress. I don't like this color with the white but I am kicking myself for not buying it in more colors, like turquoise of pacific blue (they were kind of cheap at $30):

And this is how I wore it yesterday to the playdate at my friend's house. I kept it simple but fresh for a hot summer day:

What's your favorite option? Do you wear total white? Do you have an optical white dress? What do you wear it with? Any suggestions?

  1. I live in white during the summer, it's the shade I look best in. I like option one best of all and prefer it unbelted. When I go on holiday I always pack about 3 or 4 white dresses.

  2. I love it with the belts and no necklaces. Maybe a lightweight scarf would work? You look lovely in everything. The beaded belt is my favorite look -wow!

  3. I love white, although I wear it mostly in tops. The dress is cut so well. I much prefer your looks with necklaces. The brigheter/chunkier/more textural the necklace the better.

  4. First choice: top 2 pics with big necklaces. Second choice: no necklace and big beaded belt. That belt is HOT.

  6. I like it unbelted, though I hear you about the troubles of silk in summer. In the photos it looks like cotton, which would be better. As for the optical white, I think it has more to do with the undertones of people's skin that determines whether they gravitate towards white or off white. I'm guessing you have warm skin with yellow undertones, in which case the common wisdom says you should wear off whites and ivories.

  7. I liked the Zara belt with this dress the best, followed closely by the silver belt/flip-flops.

No white dresses in my closet... just a LOT of white T's.

  8. I think it would look great with no belt, larger earrings, a statement bracelet, and sandals...no necklace. (I don't think the neckline of the dress works with one.) Out of the looks you put together I like the one with the Zara belt the best. :)

  10. I like best belted with no necklace (first two belts) or with the violet bubble necklace unbelted :)

  11. It is a beautiful dress. If the white is a problem I'm sure you could find someone who would dye it for you.

  12. I love it belted with the silver belt or the H&M one... no necklace or perhaps something that hits at your collarbone and not quite as long as the others. However, I think the best way to wear white is to keep it simple and classic!

  13. I like it w/the silver belt and also w/the bubble necklace. However, I see the point about the necklace competing w/the neckline of the dress. What about bangles. Unbelted dress w/bangles would be really cute.

  14. I wished I looked as fabulous in white as you do!
Great little dress, I think it looks great belted AND unbelted.
I do like FFM's suggestions for styling too!

  15. I saw a woman at the park wearing this dress with darling red sandals, not belt. It was darling. :)

  16. Thank you for chiming in ladies, I really appreciate all the comments and suggestions!
Looking at the pictures I think that my favorite two looks are the one with the silver belt and sandals and the one with the bubble necklace (but I still like it more belted).

FFM, thanks for the suggestion. I really don't have "larger earrings" (I only wear the diam studs that my husband offered me for my 35th birthday or nothing at all), so that's not an option for me but I see what you mean when you say that the necklaces that I have shown fight a little bit with the neckline of the dress.
    Thanks for stopping by!

Gigi, yes bangles or a big cuff would work. I have to work on that!
