Returnable Item of the Week: the Lightweight Denim Trousers

First, the commenting function is back to normal. Yesterday I had unwillingly blocked everyone from commenting by restricting the comments to "members of this blog" only. I'm sorry for that. I mistakenly thought that a follower was a member of the blog but when at the end of the day I saw that there were no comments to my last two posts I had a suspicion and I found out (by reading the Blogger Help) that the Blogger definition of team member was not the same than mine.
So now it's fine, you can comment again and also go back and comment on my yesterday's post if you have tried and still want to (still no anons allowed though, I need a break from them).

Now back to the subject of this post, I have been stalking these pants for a long time on the website and they are the item that I ordered along with the Chrystal Symphony necklace (BTW, I have returned it yesterday and the SA didn't even take it out from the box to see if it was the good necklace that I was returning!) when they popped back in my size two weeks ago (it was before the 20% off promo, so I paid $79 for them, with free shipping).
I had tried them in store when they first came out (you maybe remember it as I posted a pic), but decided not to buy them at that time because I was sure that they would go on sale later. However, my size (a 0 for those who are not familiar with my measurements) sold out pretty much immediately in the stores here and in many trips to different stores I didn't see any size smaller than a 6, so I decided that I would buy them as soon as they would make a popback on the website (they ALWAYS do, right? You just have to be there at the right moment. Like at 4 in the morning).

I have been looking for a lightweight denim pair for the summer for a long time and I really like the color (so summery) and the fabric (so soft). However, I'm on the fence about them.
Really, I can't tell if they look incredibly cool or just the opposite (like, workers pants).
The thing is that they have a flower power thing to them and they can look a little bit shabby. Also, as you know I'm pretty petite and wide-leg pants are tricky for us petites. So I have tried them dressed up and down and I like them more dressed up. But do I need a pair of jeans that I have to dress up to look good in? Jeans are supposed to be THE item in one's closet that you look good in when you DON'T WANT TO DRESS UP. Right? But maybe it's just an impression.
So here are the two versions, dressed up and down and I would like you to tell me what you think. If I decide to keep them, I will need to have the hem done (in the pics I wear platforms and I have rolled them inside a little bit but without pinning them).

First, dressed down with a white tee (this is the Slub cotton twisted V-neck tee, style 16090, that just went on sale. It fits TTS and I highly reccomend it):

See what I mean? The look a little bit shabby in this pic to me.
BTW I have bought my first boyfriend V-neck tee and I just have to show it to you. HeidiG, I know that I'm late to jump on the wagon but late is better than never, right? Actually this is my second one. I bought the first in the weathered stone color when they started to popup in the sale section of the stores (they had tons of them but I just found two XS) and I just HAD to have the warm shell one (that costed me another hour or two of stalking on the website, but I finally got it with the 20% off). So here it is (it's all wrinkled from the box but once steamed it will look just great):

I thought that it would be too big on me, but now I totally get while there are people crazy about this tee.
Back to the pants, I have tried them with the tuxedo-front cami and the dangling pearls necklace (you will see a lot of this one I think, I just LOVE it):

I threw on the Georgia cardigan in bistro orange that I just received with the boyfriend tee (got this one in FS with the 20% off, what a steal) and I'm surprised that the colors work well together (I was also playing around with the cardigan because I've never owned anything in this color. Not that it's a very common color):

And then, to push the dress-up look to the extreme, I tried them with my Chanel jacket (but I will have to change my platforms for heels):

I got you, right? Well, the jacket is not a real Chanel, it's an old Zara and it's just amazing. There is no other brand like Zara if you are looking for a well made knockoff. When I got this jacket (we were still living in Paris) I told my husband that it was from Chanel and he kind of had a hart attack. Then when I told him that it was "just a $100 Zara" he was super happy (I use this trick sometimes, and it ALWAYS work).

So, what do you think of the pants? Worth it $79? Do you own these pants? How do you style them?

  1. Do not like J crew jeans, denim trousers whatever you want to call them. To each their own, but you will not catch that thing hanging in any of my closets. I might be j crew "crazy" but insane I'm not. Their pants always end up stretching and fitting like a plumbers fit by the end of the day and I'm a size 2. I will go out of my way to buy the jeans from White House Black Market because they fit me the best. That being said, there are a ton of polyvores that make J crew pants/denim to swoon for and I have even seen them IRL on the pics of blogs where the JCA's can rock those pants/jeans like royalty. Me? No way.

  2. i like it better dressed up with the tuxedo cami and the georgia cardigan.
OT have you seen the libretto neclace IRL? is it worth full price?
    is it very dressy?

  3. I'm personally not a fan of this style of denim. I love the lightweight fabric, but I don't like the square pockets on the front...if they had been regular slant-front pockets, these jeans would be perfect. The square pocket just looks outdated to me. That said, they do fit you nicely, and if you see yourself getting a lot of wear out of them, then keep 'em!

  4. I don't love them......however, I love that Zara jacket!! Lovely!! And welcome to Heidi's boyfriend tee club!! I own three of these tees---love them. I do love that shell color tee on you, too:)

  5. I don't love the pants, if you do choose to keep them I would wear them dressed up like you did with the tuxedo cami and cardigan. It really looks the best when paired with those two pieces.

  6. I am on the fence about these jeans because the contrast stitching and the pocket style make them look very 70's. If I were to wear them I would have to wear my top untucked so the upper portion of the jeans would be covered! They look like they fit you very well, so if you like the retro look, then keep them. If not--try their bootcut jeans! :)

  7. If you keep them, I like them with the Georgia Cardigan and the Tuxedo shirt. Otherwise they are just ok.

  8. I have a pair of those jeans but by another company.
To me they are SUPER casual and I only wear them the days I am totally bumming around the house.
I think it's the front and back pockets that are just very casual looking.

Just my 2 cents of course :D

  9. I like them dressed up.
But, I can't get past how the front pockets are outlined in darker stitching. otherwise, I like the color alot, I just wish the pockets weren't outlined! ugh. I would probably pay more like $20 for them.

  10. Yay! I can comment.

The first time I saw those pants I thought, "I had something like that in high school back in the '90s," so they were always a no-go for me.

You look good in the pants because you have an amazing body, but something about them still bug me. I just feel they don't look modern enough...I feel they are too vintage...if that makes any sense.

I guess it is similar to those frou-fy dresses of the fifties...you can create a dress that has the feel of that awesome era but without all the excess fabric and length and detailing that make many of the vintage dresses difficult to wear.

If you keep the pants, I know you will make them work...

The nastiness you had to deal with made me sad. I am so glad you kept blogging. I readily admit to even one negative comment keeping me up at night upset, so what you dealt with would have put me in therapy! So bravo! You are awesome!

  11. I am not a huge fan of these. They look a little 70s. I understand what you mean about wanting some lightweight denim. I bought the J Crew Vintage Slim selvage jean http://tiny.cc/7KT3B and rolled them up to get the same casual, lightweight look that also looked cute dressed up!

I am sorry you had to deal with all of those crazy anons. They just are jealous of your lovely life - no need to be upset. And since I couldn't comment before, Happy Birthday! I am so glad you found such a lovely dress! I told you Intermix had some great deals! I love the Marley brand - they make really great clothes. At the sample sale this year, I managed to snag 3 cashmere wraps for $39 each! You should definitely check it out next time!

BTW - adorable Zara jacket. I totally thought it was Chanel!

  12. Those jeans are cute on you! And you looked amazing in your party dress, btw.

  13. oooooh, not sure about the jeans. Hesitant to say that, I lurk on your blog and think very highly of you. Just not so much in these jeans ;)

If you can find a pair of seaside trousers in chambray those might give you the look you want but in a more tailored way.

  14. Sorry Ema, don't like on you. It looks vintagey but in a dated sort of way. For its price, $99 signature premium jeans seem a better buy at the Nordstrom site right now.

  15. Jcrewcrazy, I don't own many Jcrew jeans myself, just one pair. Generally speaking I'm with you: I bought a pair of boycut jeans a pair of years ago and they stretched out o badly, they completely lost their shape after a few wears (and they were $89 jeans!) I was so disappointed that I stopped even looking at jeans at Jcrew. But I think that the "new" matchstick are a better quality though.

Ina, sorry about the libretto necklace, you have asked many times and I haven't replied yet. Yes I saw it in IRL, but I haven't tried it on or even took it in my hands because I have a similar one. I think it's beautiful, very sparkling, but it wasn't love at first sight for me, so I don't know if I would pay FP...

AppGal, I personally don't mind the square pockets, but you're right about the outdated look.

Mrs.anketell, yes the Zara jacket is such a great piece. I should wear it more often. And yes, I'm part of Heidi's club now...

Summerilla, thanks for sharing your opinion, much appeciated.

Petunia, I'm interested in these jeans because of the lightweight fabric. Don't need another bootcut ;-).

Laura, thanks for sharing. I like them best with the tuxedo shirt as well.

    TM, I think you're right ...

Anne, they are $49 less the 20% off in store right now and that bugs me... If I could get my size, they would definitively be more worth it.

Dinagideon, it makes sense. And thank you for the encouraging words, knowing that there are people who appreciate what I'm doing gives me a great motivation to keep up with the blog, even in "difficult times".

Dominique, I bought the linen-denim selvedge jeans in cowgirl wash as well but immediately didn't love them (besides the fact that my "normal" size was HUGE). I tried a pair of light weight Habitual (if I remember correctly) years ago that were just perfect (same color than the Jcrew and even lighter but didn't buy them. I guess that I'm looking for a substitute.
Thanks for the compliments (I didn't know Marley before buying this dress). I love Intermix but I try to keep away from it. When I went in to try the dress I ended up with three items (the prices were great though). When I was childless I used to go to their crazy sample sale, maybe next year when my daughter starts nursery school I will have a little bit of free time to go again.

    Post-fab princess, thank you!

Tina Z., thank you for you appreciation. You're right abour the chambray seaside
pants, but I couldn't find my size so far. Keep readining and posting!

  16. It is the pockets that make these a no go. Not flattering at all IMO. Return.

  17. no....the color is what kills it for me. Way too light and acid looking.

I think in a darker wash you could totally rock them!!

  18. Ema, I succeeded in getting a pair of the chambray seasides in 0 by calling a few stores. Someone mentioned on JCA seeing them in their store, too, so I think there are a number of them out there. If you don't want to call around now, I'm sure there will be a popback. The nice thing though is that the 20% off is still in store right now, so I got my pair (arrives today) including shipping for $31.38. I will also have to get them hemmed, but I am hoping I love them.

I agree the lightweight denim trousers are a bit too funky, and not in a good way. They remind me of pants my mother used to garden in in the 1970s.

Are you still sold on the amethyst croquet cardigan? Mine is sitting in the box by the front door because I'm on the fence. Did you have any other styling suggestions other than the navy mica mini? I can't think of anything else in my closet except jeans or my denim pencil skirt. I'd love to hear your ideas, because I have a feeling if I return it, I'll regret it. I do wish the colors were more saturated.

    Your birthday party looked lovely!

  19. Marie, Summer and Cinderella, I'm quite convinced now that I can find better for the price and I'm going to returning them. Thank you for being honest!

Corry, I still LOVE the amethyst croquet cardigan and I can't wait to wear it (sort of, not that I'm not enjoying these sunny and hot day that finally have here). I haven't thought much of other styling options to be honest (I know that I'm going to wear it a lot with dark jeans/navy trousers) but looking at what I have in my closet I found that the color goes well with the JCrew shell color (warm and not). I have the cafe capri in shell and it's super-nice with them and the rosette tee underneath. More than that I don't see anything else to suggest at the moment. Hope that you're going to keep it, I definitively prefer it over the melon.

  20. I'm happy to see a review of these trousers. I was also interested in them after seeing them online. IMHO they overwhelm your petite frame. I have the same issue with wide legged pants, especially if they are really long. I love the Georgia cardigan and was thinking about the twisted v-neck tee as well. Glad to know the tee fits TTS. LOVE the Zara jacket! It fits you really well.

  21. Hi Ema, just to say that the chambray seasides arrived and indeed I do love them. I hope you might be able to find a pair, too. I'll have them tailored this weekend and will lose some of the wide leg at the bottom, but hopefully will keep some of the look. They are incredibly soft and are just a tad big in the 0, which can be taken in with the belt. I didn't want to take them off!

Thanks so much for your ideas on the croquet cardi. I think I will be returning mine. I love the design of it but I the color just doesn't work for me or my wardrobe. I agree it is super chic, though, and I hope you get good wear out of it in Paris!

  22. These are not my favorite JC jeans. I try to avoid this type of pocket detail because even on the slimmest of figures (ie, you:) )the stitching acts like an arrow pointing to the hips. But, if you keep them I love how you styled them with the ruffle blouse and cardigan.
Sounds like you received a not nice comment? I'm sorry. You are doing a great job! Ignore the negative people.

  23. Tweetle Beetle, Stephaie and all: thank you for your advice. I returned them this morning and no regrets, you opened my eyes!

Stephanie, thank you! Yes, I had to face some nasty comments last week but thanks to readers like you I'm still here!
