You don't how how difficult it is to walk on a sole without the upper of the shoe (the straps were still attached to the sole but without the thong my foot slipped forward at each step) until you try. After 15 minutes of me dragging my feet (where I had barely walked half a block) I realized that there was no way that I could make it home like that and because of the stroller (a bugaboo) I couldn't even take a cab. I stopped at the Citibank on Madison and I asked for tape but they only had the slim paper tape (that notoriously doesn't stick) so after a few tentatives I gave up on the idea of taping the strap back as an emergency procedure.
At that point only Jcrew, that happened to be on the same block, could save me. I was on the other side of Madison and I was a little bit scared of crossing the street with my walking-challenged shoes, but then I thought "hey, old ladies cross the streets every day and they aren't faster than you now", so I went (the reality is that car drivers - especially NYC taxi drivers - expect old ladies to be slow but expect younger ladies to cross the street almost running so even if they SEE that you are still in the middle of the street their brain doesn't register you).
Anyway I made to the Jcrew store and then I had two options:
1) Buy the cheapest pair of shoes that they had (hopefully they had still some capris sandals left in the back); or
2) Use the accident as a good excuse to buy the pair of shoes that I'm currently coveting, the suede Juliet midheels in black or graphite.
I explained that I "needed" a new pair of shoes and I added "literally" pointing to my feet and I asked if they had a pair of capri left in a 7. The SA brought me three pairs (none was a 7) telling me that the cheapest of the bunch was the gold pair, in a 6. These were only $12.99 and even if not my regular size they fitted (Jcrew capri run a little bit big) and at least they would bring me home, so it was a deal.
Incidentally, while I was waiting for the shoes I heard the two other SAs talking about something that was "gone" and "couldn't even be reordered because it came from this place in Paris", so I immediately thought of the lace cami that I saw on the table three days ago and I asked for confirmation. They told me that they SOLD THEM ALL (and the gentleman at the door added "in like, 5 minutes" - it must have been a subject of conversation among the employees). I guess that the Madison Avenue Collection store is THE place if any where a lace cami at $800 can sell out in matter of minutes, but I was shocked anyway. Now I'm kicking myself for not trying it on when I saw it and take pics for you ladies (but I have no other regret). Summerilla saw it at the Soho store so if it's still there when I go (I think that it's going to sell less fast there), I will make sure to try it on.
And now, a pic of my yesterday's outfit. I changed my mind re. the Imperial tee: I definitively LOVE it after trying it with my surplus matchstick in grey:

I really think that it's a summer tee, so I decided to wear it right away and actually I wanted to wear it again today!
Did you ever "needed" a new pair of shoes? What would have you done if you were me? Bought an "emergency pair" or your most coveted pair?
You always have the cutest stories! I broke a heel on a pair of pumps during lunch and I had to "splurge" on a pair of Manolos b/c Neimans was the closet store. I was going to a job interview a needed shoes ASAP and didn't have time to drive around to a differnt store.
ReplyDeleteLove the tee on you!
Your lucky! I wish my shoes would break while near only a J.Crew :)
ReplyDeleteThe only time I really "needed" shoes was when we went to Disneyland a few yrs ago and my "walking" shoes were seriously hurting my feet - so I had to get a rather ugly pair of tennis shoes from target :( boo!
Perfect reason to buy a new pair of shoes!! The SOHO store had about 3-4 of the cami's left, I'm not even sure in our size. I wasn't trying to get my hopes up too much by trying it on but I so wish I had. It just looked so gorgeous in person! Oh I seriously wish I had $800 to spend on it!
ReplyDeleteOh and I have talked to a couple others, what do you think about trying to start a NYC JCA group? Would you be interested?
oh I love this story. When you said "only J Crew could save" you, it made me smile :) Love the tee. I can't believe those $800 tops. I wonder if we will see them on anyone famous/recognizable in the magazines or online.
ReplyDeleteI love reading your stories, too:) I think an "emergency pair of shoes" is in the works, for most mommies!! HA! Feel no guilt!! I love that tee---more and more. Would like to see more outfits with it....
ReplyDeleteWhat a story! So glad you didn't have to walk home shoeless! A friend of mine took off her shoes while painfully limping down a NYC street -- her shoes were giving her blisters. But barefoot on the sidewalks?! There's so much glass and debris.... Anyway - three cheers for J.Crew! I probably would've done just what you did -- to buy what works -- assuming they were cheap enough. LOVE the Imperial Tee! I just got mine this afternoon -- so cute! :)
ReplyDeleteI was once wearing a pair of between the toe Manolo's with a little heel, and all of a sudden I'm walking and the thong part broke apart from shoe. I didn't know what to do...its really impossible to walk then. Thank goodness I wasn't far from home and I had my car nearby. I can't imagine how you made it to J Crew even if it wasn't far.
ReplyDeleteNow pretty much I always have a pair of flip-flops in my bag...not so much from the expirience but for when I'm ready to say I don't care how I look I just need to be comfortable. I usually leave the house in some sort of a shoe with height but then after walking in the city after a while its enough.
Emily, thank you! Wow, what an excellent excuse to buy a pair of Manolos!
ReplyDeleteStacie, actually I could have looked for a nail salon (there is one not far from the Jcrew) but I didn't think about it at all. I must be "programmed" on Jcrew ...
Summerilla, I must admit that I'm not a big fan of lace (although that one was beautiful), so I would have tried it on just for the blog because I know that many of you love it. However I have to say that when I saw it in the store I had a scruple about trying on such an expensive and delicate piece just for fun, so maybe even if they still had it at the Soho store I couldn't push myself to actually try it on. We'll see!
And yes, of course I'm interested in being part of a JCA group in the city.
Sweet Tea, thank you! Apparently Jenna and Mickey were right about this one ...
mrs.anketell, thank you. I will think about other outfits! I think that it looks nicer with a bottom in a light color like grey or pastels) than with black or darker colors.
RatsOnParade, I thought about that (walking home barefeet) for a second but then I thought of all I could possibly get under my foot and I immediately discarded that option.
RatsOnParade, I used to have a pair of flip-flops in the stroller but because I started wearing flip-flops all the time I took them out. But you're right. When I used to work I always had a pair of emergency shoes in my bag (I had a pair of those 99 cents chinese slippers that are really lightweight)
I ordered the lace cami online a few weeks back insisting to myself that because of the price, I would just try it and immediately return it! I also had just paid off my credit cards so I had a nice zero balance going! Anyway, it arrived yesterday. It's gorgeous, the size 6 fits beautifully. There's no way this is going back. Now I'm going to have to pay for it! I'll try to send you a picture. I hate to say it but I'd plurge for it all over again! So if you can find it, and manage to make it work financially, then definetly buy it!
ReplyDeleteI don't think I have ever done that (not to say that my shoes have never broken on me, but there's a lot one can do with staples and tape) but I am seriously considering "accidentally" ripping apart the pair I am wearing right now so that I can get myself a new pair :)
ReplyDeleteI love that tee and can't wait to get it!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute story I hope you enjoy the shoes! I would love to see a picture of the lace cami if you find one. $800...um, not for me! :)
love the imperial tee!
ReplyDeletei think i am going to oreder mine because the xs is already down to 10 online.
did you get the scarf too?
Great story, I can see myself using that excuse to buy something new. And that outfit looks good on you!
ReplyDeleteJulie, congratulations on the lace cami, you're one of the lucky few! I can understand how one can splurge for something that is really exceptional and it looks like this cami really is. Last year I was eyeing a leopard-print fur coat by Agnes B. (I tried on it three times) but it was much more expensive than the stuff that I usually buy so I waited for it go on sale and it never did (and my size sold out before Thanksgiving). I totally regret it because it was something that I won't find anywhere else. So I totally understand. I would love to see a picture if you don't mind sending one!
ReplyDeleteZoe Moet, lol, that was funny!
Stephanie, thank you. I think I'm going to try to sell the sandals on the weekly exchange, I have so many gold sandals, I really don't "need" them any longer ;-). I would keep them if they were the orange "neon" ones (I was hoping that they would bring me those!)
ina, before you buy it I would like to stress the fact that it's REALLY THIN
(hope you won't be disappointed).
No, I didn't get the scarf because it's a pretty substantial weight (compared to the tee) and also because I just received long-washed silk scarf (a popback) that is also striped (even if is not grey but more spice olive).
nobelle, thank you. Yes, now I "almost" wish that my (old) shoes would rip off more frequently ;-).
I think it looks fabulous on you! I forgot to bring my shoes to a wedding out of town and had to buy a less than pretty pair at a very suspect looking store in a very small town. Nobody noticed except me and I would imagine a few snide chicks. Ah ha
ReplyDeleteLadies, can we PLEASE start a NYC JCA group? Even if we're toting the kids to Crewcuts and the Colelction store? :) I would LOVE a JCA store event... :)
ReplyDeleteKristin, thank you! Do you still have/wear those shoes?
ReplyDeleteJC, I sign up! I suggest to start it in September when everyone is back from vacation and Summerilla has moved here.
