(Speaking of which, have you watched Madmen last night? Boy, it was really somber, I'm not sure if I liked it (especially because Roger looked like a great man compared to Don/Dick) but the last sequence was poignant (as they often are)).
Today I want to share the outfit that I wore on Friday evening to dinner at friend's. Actually I was just "trying on" the outfit and it ended up being the outfit that I wore because my daughter was having a babysitter panic attack and was doing everything she could to delay the moment when she would be alone with her (like asking for milk, that she NEVER drinks before going to bed) and my husband was unusually inattentive to my daughter's cries (normally he runs when my daughter asks for something, especially milk. He is the "milkman" of the house, has always been), so basically I had to take care of her and didn't have the time to change. Don't get me wrong, I love this outfit but I think it was a little bit too much for the occasion, I would have preferred to wear pants instead of the deco skirt but I couldn't figure out quickly which pair (and then it was too late).

Looking at the pictures afterwards I understood what I find refreshing in this outfit: the absence of ruffles (and tiers). This blouse is the Harlow silk blouse from Fall 08 and it looks like it comes from a different era, the pre-ruffles Jcrew era (although they had just launched the Victoria and a couple of other ruffled shirts but I thought that they would be the exception). It's so classic and well-made, a staple in a woman's closet. Not to mention that the darts at the waist (that you can't see very well in the pics because it was tucked in the skirt) make it incredibly flattering. I'm kicking myself for not buying another one on sale in the fresh guava (or was it papaya? I can never make the difference between the two shades) or honey glaze during the TURKEY and HOORAY promotions last year (by the way, do you think that this year we'll have a little something besides FREE SHIPPING for the holidays?), especially because I paid this one around $35.
I wanted to show off the blouse (and the buttons in the back that go all the way down. Not that anyone has noticed), so I didn't wear a cardigan. I tried it with the Eden velvet blazer in black that I have recently purchased for less than $100 but I ended up wearing a coat directly over the shirt because I'm not sure that that I'm going to keep the blazer. I really need an evening black jacket but to be honest I think that I can find something more flattering, especially around this time of the year. Sometimes I buy Jcrew because I'm too lazy to look around. Anyway, I took a pic:

Last week when my daughter was at school I was strolling down Madison Avenue and I saw a street vendor around 60th st. that was selling a $10 pashmina that reminded me of the deco skirt, so I bought it (it wasn't a big investment and it felt very luxurious at the touch for a $10 scarf). The print is quite similar, but the background is whiter, while in the deco skirt there is the same amount of black and white:

I did wear it with the deco skirt and my black puffer coat even if it was a little bit too much print together, but I plan on wearing it a lot with my white Zara coat this winter. Now I have to go back and get the ocelot one!
Have a nice evening!
i looove the pashminas they sell on the streets in nyc- when i was there last winter i got like 3. they've held up nicely, too!
ReplyDeleteI really need to find an occasion to wear my deco shirred skirt (I have not worn mine yet!)! I just LOVE it and seeing you ladies in yours makes me love it even more! ;)
ReplyDeleteThat scarf is fabulous!! Of course I love the print. Go get the ocelet one too! :-P
ADORE the scarf!! Even together with the skirt.
ReplyDeleteI love the skirt and blazer together!
I love that skirt. I just don't find them long enough for me to wear comfortably. Now that the first lady wore it I doubt I could even get my hands on one to try in a bigger size to see if I could get it to work.
ReplyDeleteI bought that same necklace because you reviewed it, I just love it. I want the crystal supernova bracelet in black, it would be so cute together.
I love that skirt! It looks beautiful on you!
ReplyDeletei really like the deco skirt. the size 0 is already soldout, you were lucky to bought it right away.
ReplyDeletecan you give me the style number of the ruffled scarf? what colors did they have instore?
TIA
Great scarf!
ReplyDeleteHappy to see how you are wearing the deco skirt. I love my black one soooo much that I have ordered the Deco as well, but now it is waitlisted in the 2. Uh-oh, I hope it is still coming my way!
My youngest daughter hates it when I go out, so we have always made a game of dressing up, with make-up and jewelry, and she picks my outfit (well, sort of..) This way I can actually get out of the house without looking totally frazzled!
Really like your OOTD/OOTE posts!
Cate, I was wondering if the "street pashmina" are a NYC thing. I guess that they sell them in all the big cities? They are great for the price, but this one is particularly soft, it really feels like a pashmina (while the other ones that I have feel cheaper)
ReplyDeleteMMM, wear it, please! It's such a nice skirt. And yes, I love the print too ;-)
mommydearest, I can't decide if I like the scarf with the skirt or not, but I certainly like it alone. Not sure about the Eden either, the fit of JCrew jackets is a little bit odd on me.
Summerilla, it's definitively short, so I guess that you should size up one or two sizes to get the "right" lenght on you. Michelle Obama can't possibly have worn one that was sold in the stores, they must have made it one especially for her, she is so tall!
sweet tea, thank you!
ina, welcome back, I missed your comments. The style of the scarf is 20267 (price is $50) and as far as I know it comes in black, heather grey (the one that I bought) and ivory. I didn't see the ivory in persoon as I wasn't interested.
DaniBP, actually I'm NOT wearing my black one because for the evening I prefer the deco. I'm thinking of returning it and buying it in another color for the day (the grey or the aubergine).
I tried the dress-up together thing once with my daughter but then she was soooo disappointed when she realized that she wasn't coming with us that I felt terrible.
yay--another OOTD posting from you:) I really, really also love the skirt on you, it looks beautifully elegant! Nice buy on the pashmina--i just picked one up here, today at the mall during my lunch. They were selling them at a booth in the mall, and i love it!! I paid fifteen dollars for it!
ReplyDeleteHey Ema, I nominated you for an award on my blog. You rock, girl!
ReplyDeleteLove this outfit on you!! I agree about the refreshing absence of ruffles & tiers.
ReplyDeletethat deco skirt is so fun - I tried it on in store, and found that sizing up one made the length perfect - but it wasn't worth FP to me at the time. Doubt we'll see it again now that Mrs O has worn it. Ah well...maybe the next skirt...
