OTTD (with a Special Guest) and New Purchase

Hello my dear readers, are you feeling springy? We are still blessed with nice spring temperatures here, which makes choosing an outfit a real pleasure after all those months of wearing the same outfit again and again (even if I a lot of clothes to choose from, at the end of the winter it gest a little boring)! I feel like I have won an entire new wardrobe!

Yesterday was a very important day for a lot of families with preschoolers in NYC. It was the day when everybody received the acceptance letters for the next school year and I have to tell you that a big weight got off my shoulders! My daughter was accepted into the nursery school that is just around the corner from our place and this is going to change my life as I won't have to walk half an hour a day to school (and back) as I do now. On the other side I really like the school where she is currently going (she is so happy there), and if it weren't so far I wouldn't have applied to another school and went through all the preschool drama again. If you're not in NYC you probably won't understand, the nursery school admission process is very particular to the city, apparently.

Anyway, I didn't know yet yesterday morning when I was getting ready for my walk to school, but the day was announcing itself as a great one already. For starters, it was unusually warm, even in the early morning, and I had plans to meet with a fellow JCA who happens to live in the neighborhood for coffee and a little shopping (returns actually) at the Collection store. That was a
lot of fun and I'm happy that I got to meet her through this blog!
I wore the pleated-chiffon cardigan in putty from last year, the "can't remember the name" cami also from last year and black toothpick jeans:

As you could see, we have a special guest today: my daughter was playing in the background (as usual) and she was so cute in her Stella McCartney for Gap wool minidress that I wanted her to be in the spotlight (while I usually try to crop her out):

I couldn't resist (mommy's heart) and took some pics of her alone:

It was the perfect weather to break out my long-coveted-finally-mine ruffled-collar trench. I haven't pics of the entire outfit but I wore the trench the other day to take pics of my new purchase (just replace the chinos with the toothpick jeans).
My new purchase is a purse. I have been looking for a small and easy to carry purse for-e-ver. It had to be a cross-body, so in case we have to take a bus or the subway I can carry my daughter AND the stroller (folded on my shoulder). But mainly I needed one for all those summer afternoons when we go to the playground after nap and I just need to take with me my wallet, keys and phone. I bought the Jcrew charmed mini-bag before Xmas but returned it because it was too dressed up for my lifestyle and also too seasonal (you don't want to wear tweed in the summer). Not that I disliked it but it just wasn't what I was looking for. Also the colors where a little bit difficult to pair as I don't have a lot of black coats/jackets (I have more in the camel tones).

So when I quickly walked into a BR store last Saturday just to browse what they had and I saw this small cross-body bag in a cognac leather and with a chain (bonus), I knew that I had finally found my baby. Moreover, they were running a promo where each customer was given a coupon and inside you could get 25%, 30% or 50% off the ENTIRE PURCHASE. It was my lucky day and I got 50% off! So instead of $98 I paid less than $50 (and it's a leather bag, not plastic).
Here it is:

It's small (same size of the Jcrew one) but I can fit my wallet, keys and phone inside:

By the way, this is the "other" watercolor floral scarf that I bought at the Jcrew event, for the reader who asked. I bought it to wear specifically with this coat:

Now, the fun part. When my husband saw the bag, he asked me if I had found it at Goodwill. In other words, he thinks that it looks cheap and why would I buy something like that, instead of a nice bag by Chanel or Vuitton? Well, I said, that's what my budget allows me, BR, Gap and JCrew and you get upset already if I spend what you think it's too much at Jcrew, I can only imagine the reaction if you saw a $2000 Chanel purchase on the credit card statement. After thinking it over, he came up with a deal: if I return the BR bag he will offer me a Vuitton in a similar style (it has to be a Vuitton). I thought he was kidding, but he really meant it.

Now my dear readers, I really like my BR bag, I think that the color and size are perfect for me and that I will get a lot of wear out of. I am almost tempted to keep it and let the Vuitton go. Am I crazy? I have to say that I haven't looked at the Vuitton catalog in a very long time but what I don't like in Vuitton bags is what all the people like, the fact that they are too recognizable as Vuitton. I don't know, maybe I have seen too many fakes in Italy but I'm not thrilled by the idea.
Trickery (pretending that I have returned the BR bag and wearing it behind his back) is not an option here as I'm sure that I will get busted sooner or later: you can't possibly wear a bag everyday and hide it each time that you come home.

What should I do? What would you do?

By the way, BR is offering 40% off a single full price item every Wednesday in-store only. You must present a coupon to get the 40% but I'm sure that they still have them under the counter so if you are interested in any BR new arrivals, make sure to ask and go in a Wednesday. For those who liked my Theory safari jacket in this post, they have a very similar style (even if the color is a little bit lighter and it's not 100% linen) for $98. I saw it in the store and it's very pretty (definitively the same fitted style).

Wow, it was a long post, I hope you enjoyed it! Happy Wednesday!

  1. Hi Ema, I'm leaving to visit my twins in Bologna for a week and was hoping you could help with my wardrobe. What should I bring? I'm only 5'2", 54 years old, and wear a size 6 but am on the hippy side. I've been following your blog although don't post because I am not computer savvy at all! Your daughter is so adorable! Enjoy her because they do grow up so quickly! Hope you can help!
PS I did visit the store you suggested near the Met when visiting in October and picked up a couple of things for the girls.
    Thanks! Lisaocean86@hotmail.com

  2. I love the scarf and trench together. I need that scarf - it is looking so great on everyone! I have the trench and love it too but mine is white so I don't feel like it is warm enough yet to wear it. Maybe by April or May (I'm in the northwest).

  3. Oh, and your little girl is darling! Love her outfit!

  4. I agree with you about the recongnizable quality of logo bags and the fakes out there. I hate fake bags! But, I would look through the catalog and see if there is anything comparable to the BR bag and while I was at it, look through Chanel and see if there is anything that may tempt Husband away from the
Vuitton. If there is nothing you like, keep the BR mini bag!

  5. Hi again Ema, Just wanted to mention a large part of my staple wardrobe is from JCrew and Ann Taylor.
    Thanks again!

  6. I love the bag that you bought. Nowadays LV is for tacky people who think that the Vuitton monogram can buy them some kind of status, well yes it does; that of a prat with more money than sense or any individual style. ( Husbands don't know this of course)

You are very funny writer, I really enjoy your blog, I have finally gotten a google account so that I can comment.

  7. Ema,I think if you're happy with your cute BR bag, you should keep it. I hate having something super expensive that I have to worry about when I'm out with my kids. If you keep the BR bag perhaps your DH will funnel those funds towards something else you want/need at a later date.

  8. I'd do some research and see if there's a Vuitton bag that you really want. If not, I'd keep what you have.

  9. What an offer! I'm not sure what I would do. I like the previous comments suggesting you have a look at what is available, if you don't like anything keep the BR bag! I think it's a great little bag.
I am having bag-anxiety right now: I'll post about that later in the week when my : Marquee Satchel in Antique Lilac! arrives (over budget, oh well!)
Your daughter is so adorable. Congrats on the nursery school acceptance! She is as stylish as her mother!

  10. hi ema! first off, congrats on the preschool acceptance--i know exactly how you're feeling! we took a chance and only applied to 2 preschools downtown--waitlisted at one but accepted at the other! phew, so as long as my daughter has somewhere to go, i'm happy (plus, it's the closest one to our apt!)
as for the bag...hmm, i'm not a huge fan of LV (tho' if your hubs offered up a mini chanel, i'd make grabby hands!) but i would do as the previous poster suggested--check out the latest LV offerings and if there's something that truly grabs your eye, go for it! heck, for the price of the BR bag, perhaps you can keep both!

hope you're enjoying the lovely nyc weather...get it while you can, i hear rain all weekend! :(

p.s. your daughter is adorable--my little one has the stella sweater dress as well--so cute i almost bought the largest one the gap offered for myself!

  11. Hi Ema-
Funny that you posted about this BR purse because I ran in there today and thought...this is a perfect little purse for anyone (especially on-the-go moms). I have my 40% off coupon and was thinking about getting it myself as I am expecting #2 and anticipate I will have no free hands in the near future!

LV has never been my thing (or any sort of bag that has logos all over it). I actually have such a hard time paying anything over $250for a bag because I would rather have so many other things. Isn't it quite ridiculous that I will fork out $98 for a Jcrew sweater, but not too much for a leather bag?
I find it so funny that your husband thinks the BR bag looks cheap and would buy you such an expensive bag. My husband would fall over at the idea :)

Best of luck on your decision!

  12. Hi Ema, love your blog! I saw that bag yesterday and was thinking that it was a perfect bag for summer walk in the park with my 2 year old. As for LV, you might want to take a look at the LV Eva or Sophie. If you're not fond of the monogram, check out the Damier Bloomsbury.
    Good luck!
p/s Your daughter is so adorable!

  13. Hi Ema!

You're daughter is too cute. I would probably get the Louis Vuitton because the BR quality, while good, just isn't as amazing as you'd get from Chanel or Louis VUitton.

I understand your reluctance to get the LV monogram, have you looked at the Epi Leather? Or if you're going for the monogram (which can be nice), have you checked out the louis vuitton Odeon GM? It's a nice cross-body bag.

  14. Hi Ema,

I have been reading your blog for a few months and really enjoy it. I am moving to Europe( Amsterdam) in July, but most of our things are being shipped out when my husband moves in early May. I will be living out of 2 or 3 suitcases for 2 months. I am a little scared of having just a few suitcases of clothes... could you give me a few tips on what I should keep for those few months, most of my clothes come from jcrew.

    Thank you
    Sunitha

  15. I would return the bag you have now and buy LV or Chanel instead. I've seen lots of fake Monogram LVs, but none from LV's Damier and Epi Leather lines.

If you are looking for a durable bag that you'll use for a long time, I'd say go for LV.

  16. Ema, where is your mini trench from? I love it!

  17. Your daughter is TOO adorable!! Thanks for incorporating a picture of her. Quite the delight! I love the BR purse. In fact, I also have a BR coupon, and after reading your blog, i went over to the BR website, but i guess it's instore only?? If YOU love it, then keep it.

  18. I've been a lurker for awhile and I love your blog! I have not posted before but I just had to comment on your husband! I think its kinda hilarious that he actually cares about your purses. but anyway, what is wrong with that adorable BR purse you got at 50% off! I think its really cute. I wonder if you can keep it and tell your husband you'll wear it to the park. You need a purse that you don't have to worry about with kids in tow. And then take him up on the offer for a LV that you'll wear when you go out with him! Why not have your cake and eat it too?

PS: I almost got that ruffle trench last year but I already had something similar in my closet. It is really cute on you.

  19. Hi Ema - I think the BR bag is super cute and I think you should browse through some of the LV bags and if you find nothing you like than keep the BR one. That is so sweet of your husband to offer you a nice LV bag. I have to say I have a few LV bags, not because of the status symbol, but because the quality is really amazing and they hold up really well.

I like Kathy's idea about tempting him with a pretty Chanel. That would be amazing.

  20. Oh and P.S. your daughter is too cute for words. Thanks for sharing these pics with us. Love her in that Stella dress.

  21. Lisaocean86, welcome back;-). Normally around this time of the year the temperatures in Northen Italy are much warmer than here, but my parents said that it was snowing in Milan the other day, so definitively pack something warm. And no cords ;-).

Kristin, I didn't buy the white one because here there is no season for a white trench but it was cute as well. If you plan on wearing it with the trench, I would buy the scarf in the papaya color.

Kathy, yes, Chanel would be another deal completely but I think my husband is not "ready" to offer me a Chanel yet.

Tabitha, glad that you spoke up. I wouldn't generalize on the people who wear logos (some are tacky, some are not). Vuitton is not the tackiest IMO but if I had to choose I would choose a Vuitton.

    JulieStyles, exactly my point!

LadyCardigan, I will but I don't want to force myself to like something that I don't like.

DaniBP, I understand bag anxiety. Isn't it funny how there are periods in life when the bag that you're wearing (or not wearing) is the last of your thoughts and all of a sudden all you can think of is a new bag? Thanks for the congrats!

stef, congrats as well! Yes a mini Chanel will be a deal maker but I also love the (more affordable) Marc Jacobs "Single" that comes in a Chanelesque beige for spring. However, I would be stressed to wear it (not to mention the Chanel) to the park and it wouldn't fit the bill as the BR. LV are more durable. But you're right, the best would be to keep the BR as an unpretentious bag and also have a more expensive or "classy" one (not necessarly LV).

Christy, I'm 100% with you. I would reccomend the the BR bag, but I have to say that I have a very small wallet that can fit in it.

ss, thanks. I will have a look, thanks for the suggestion.

Dominique, thanks! I will check the Odeon out! I'm not fond of the Epi cuir either.

Sunitha, I'm not sure if I can help as I don't know where you live, if you work in an office or are a student and what's your lifestyle. An advice that I can give you is to keep the colors in the same color palette that you can mix and match. Hope it helps!

Mona P., I know that Vuitton or Chanel bags are more durable than a BR but I'm not sure that I'm going to wear a Vuitton more than this particular BR. As a matter of fact I have some designer bags and I don't wear them often.

Sarah Mina, it's the Jcrew ruffled-collar trench (aka "Keagan" trench) from Spring 2009. There should still be some on ebay. The Loft as a similar style this year, you might want to check it out.

mrs.anketell, thanks. I haven't checked but I guess that it's in-store only if you haven't found it. There was only one in my store, maybe it's selling out?

  22. Hello. Just came across your blog and just wanted to say, your daughter's guesting on your picture just made me smile. She's so cute! Children can just wipe away stress when theyre not yours but Im sure all the moms would beg to disagree with me on that at times =) God bless!
