Nude Shoes Dilemma: Advice Needed!

Way back at the beginning of the summer I impulse-bought on sale a pair of high-end shoes that I almost immediately regretted buying, for two reasons. First (most important) reason: they were not my size but a half size bigger. I wasn't loosing them but you could see a gap of half an inch between the back of the shoe and my foot. The SA talked me into wearing them with pads and I was stupid enough to buy into his sale pitch.
Second reason: they are a beautiful pair of shoes but not something that I needed and they are expensive, even on sale. What I really liked about them (besides the fact that they are nude without being pinkish or tan which is pretty rare to find) is the fact that they are very classic and they have a very low heel, which (to me) makes them the perfect pair to wear with non-black party dresses (as I am pretty incapable of wearing a pair of high-heeled pumps without looking, and feeling, like a foolish woman).
They are by Bally, a Swiss brand that is maybe more well-known in Europe:

I wanted to return them but the problem was the final sale policy of the store. Luckily for me I used my Amex so after getting back from my vacation I filed a claim through my Amex return protection program and I finally received the go-ahead from Amex to send the shoes (that must be unworn and in the original packaging), which is the final step before they can refund my credit card for the amount that I paid (something like $250).

But in the meanwhile I caved and bought the Elena shift dress (which is almost sold out on the website, as I just found out!) I have to tell you that I am still a little bit in shock about the price that I paid (even with the $25% off) but it's the "cool factor" of this dress that I find quite special and very suited to my personality/lifestyle and I thought that if I were ever to buy a lace dress it had to be this one.
So what the Elena dress has to do with my shoes? Well, the shoes happen to be the perfect pair to wear with the dress IMO (when I am not in the mood to wear it with my motorcycle boots, lol) because they are exactly the same champagne shade of the dress lining. And quite magically I tried them today and they fit like a dream (no gap). Don't ask me how's possible that a grown-up woman's feet grow up half a size in a few months but I have noticed recently that many of my old shoes feel quite tight. OK, now if this is a known symptom of incipient menopause, don't tell me!

So as I am ready to put them in the mail and never see them again, I am hesitating and I would appreciate a little help ;-). You maybe see something that I don't see and that can help me taking the right decision.
I am going to show you the shoes with the Elena dress but this is not a post on the dress itself as I didn't have time at all to style it (but I think that less is more with this dress so there isn't much to style). I am perfectly conscious that these are a more springy alternative to black tights/black shoes but I think that that's how I prefer it (without tights or with nude tights) and I don't think that there is a better pair of shoes for it out there, also because the dress is pretty short and a higher heel would create a disproportion. The downside of lower heels is that they don't lengthen the leg as, say, a 4" Laboutin.
But enough words, here are the pics:

What do you think? Should I keep them or you think that I can find better? The only contender would be this pair but it feels silly to return a pair of shoes that I already have and go through the hassle of ordering another pair very similar if it's not to save money (and these are basically the same price). Obviously I don't plan to wear them ONLY with this dress (incidentally I think that they should also look great with pants, even if I haven't tried) but this is the mean reason for me to keep them.

Your advice is greatly appreciated!

  1. Ugh, I have the same dilemma! I have a pair of nude shoes (similar color and finish to yours) that is super uncomfortable (though they technically fit) and pinches my toes.. I keep thinking I'll return them (bought them at Nordstrom), but it's so hard to find a replacement!

Are they comfortable? If so, I would say keep them!

  2. I think you should keep them! They look amazing with the dress, and nude shoes like that are very versatile. After all, if they do fit you, there's no reason to go through the hassle of returning and then looking for another pair.

  3. btw, if you did want to return them for a cheaper pair, these ones from Piperlime that I've had my eye on look pretty similar...

  4. I say try the shoes on again tomorrow morning (and even Thursday morning) to see if they really are comfortable. You don't want to convince yourself that something fits (which I admit I've done before) just because they complete an outfit. The shoes are beautiful and look wonderful with the dress (which is gorgeous!)-- but if they don't feel right, it will probably bother you when you wear them out. If they fit, then great, and I say keep them. I agree that it's hard to find the perfect nude shoe. My fave is the patent nude Jimmy Choos with the kitten heel...

  5. I honestly love them. I like more nude shoes than darker colors and I think the heels are perfect. Besides black heels, these would be the second pair to own:)

  6. My first (gut) reaction, too, is to keep them!! They look good, and like others have said, a great pair of nude pumps/heels is difficult to find! I bet they would even look stunning with jeans and the right top......:)

  7. If they do not fit and since you are still contemplating, send them back! I bet you will be able to find another pair!

  8. Looks like I am in the minority here but I think you should probably send them back! Whenever I have doubts about buying something, I know that's a sign in it of itself. If there's any hesitation, you will probably find something better. If they were cheaper, I'd say keep them but I think for that price, you can definitely find something just as nice.

  9. I think you've answered your own question. . . . .

Funny - I was thinking my feet have grown recently. I just turned 51.

The shoes look great with that dress and now they are comfortable? Problem solved ;) Love your blog.

  10. I am with the last poster: I am 45 and my feet have grown a half size in the last few years (not swelling, but consistent). If your own larger size is transient, you may want to get nude colored foot petal inserts and/or the strips for the back of the heel until the half size is permanent. They are a gorgeous basic shoe, if you have no trouble walking in them.

  11. KEEP the dress!!! Gorgeous!!!!

The shoes are pretty, but for some reason I'm just not feeling it paired with that dress. I don't know what it is, maybe I'm picturing a satin shoe with that dress or for a burst of compact color the red Coddington pumps or something like them with a shorter heel.

Hmm...Can you see yourself wearing these shoes with a lot more outfits (say at least 10-15 so you can justify the price)? I have bought Bally items before. I think their items are well made, but hopefully you have far many more items you can instantly picture yourself pairing the pumps with to get your bang for your buck as they say. Like the other poster said, see how they feel tomorrow or at different times of the day. Can you test them indoors and be on your feet for an hour and not feel discomfort? I agree that if you're still having doubts, return the shoes. Had it not been for the dress, would you have hesitated to return the pumps? Over the years, I've learned to trust my gut, love them or move on. Something else will come along.

  12. Return the shoes. You already started the process. What if you really need to use the service some other time--will this unfullfilled claim go against you? I am sure there are other shoes out there to go with the dress. Don't second guess yourself.

  13. My feet swell a bit by the end of the day, so shoes sometimes feel tighter then. Is that the case for you too? In that case I would return them and get the higher heels. You already are protected by Amex. I also like the higher heels better. JMO

  14. I really like the dress on you. It is lovely. But the shoes -- how do I say it? They seem a little old for you. They are a wonderful brand, that's for sure. I'll bet they are really nice. But you have such a fun and youthful personality. I hate to say it, but if you were my gal pal, and we were shopping, I would use the dreaded M word: matronly.

  15. I am dressing like a cat burglar and breaking in tonight - i LOVE the dress!

Are you walking out of them? I love Bally and the shoes look great but if they're slipping off then return them.

  16. i have to say that dress looks gorgeous on you. how tall are you? (just wondering because i want that dress but it has to fall around my knee area for me to buy it!!)

  17. Ema I am so happy you bought the dress, I just have to say! It is SO EMA.
The shoes? I think you should return them. Something about the pump-ish style doesn't quite seem to fit with the dress. I agree nude shoes can be hard to find, but I bet for that price you could find something better, and a shoe that fits really well. (Maybe you have swollen feet for some other reason. You did have a calf-injury, that could swell your Achilles and in turn affect the way shoes fit.)

  18. I actually don't think the shoes look great with the dress. I'd return them. And I agree with Genny about having started the process.

  19. ema, the dress is fantastic on you! definitely return the shoes.

  20. I am also going to side with the if they don't fit perfectly then return them group. Try them on morning, night, after a long day and check again. Because: 1. when you are dressed for a party in that fab dress you don't want to be stressed about your shoes. 2. Bally is a great Swiss brand but cost-per-wear counts. 3. They are nice neutral shoes, but compared to some of your TBs etc. you seem very on fence to me that's the "return while you can" sign.

  21. The shoes are beautiful but if the fit is not perfect, you will not reach to wear them enough to make the price per wear worth it. You will find another pair.

  22. Oh, advice, of course, we looove to give advices, he he..Here are my 2 c- I own few poairs of Ballys from awhile back and they are GREAT shoes, definitely worth the investment. My concern is the size. That would be a determining factor on whether to keep them or not. If you can work around the size and you can wear them frequently, do keep them. I love nude classic pumps b/c you can wear them pretty much with anything, esp short skirts for a leg lengthening effect ( not that you need THAT anyways!).

  23. Love the dress, return the shoes. I feel they are more "meh" than wow. The color is beautiful with your skin color though.

  24. I'm not sure what you decided, but I like the shoes & respect the Bally brand. You live in the city and a high heel can't always make sense. You can still have a little bit of height with these, but not so high you can't walk. They might look good w/skirts and pants, incl the capri or martini pants you have.
