JCrew March New Arrivals, Part 4: Tops

Good Friday afternoon everyone! I am going to try to wrap up my fitting room post series before it's time for a new rollout. I tried A LOT of tops so instead of grouping them by category (sweaters, tees and tanks etc.) I am going to post them in the order I tried them on for practical reasons. I don't think you need me to tell you what's a sweater and what's a shirt anyway ;-).

Let's start with the Linen cable-knit sweater in caribbean green. I am not a fan of cable sweaters (too preppy for me), I tried this one because I was attracted to the color. It is lightweight, has a nice drape but I didn't like the bottom with the slints, I didn't find it that great of an idea because the fabric is so thin that it doesn't fall flat, everything that is underneath sticks out, so a little bit of blousy-ness would have helped there. Fits TTS, this is the XS:
Pajama alert on the next one, the Cashmere boatneck sweater in multistripe. I really, really liked this one when I saw it on the table, but the fit was off. The sleeves in the XS were loooong and it is a longer sweater overall, which doesn't work on me (maybe it looks better on taller gals), the look is pajama-y. The colors are much more vibrant IRL:
The infamous (if you have followed the discussion on the grammatically incorrect French on this tee on the JCA) Je suis un fou d'amour tee also gave me the pajama vibe. So not only I would sport bad French but I would also look sloppy. Total pass. BTW, guess what's the Google translation of "I am a fool for love?". The fit is a bit small due to tight arms, this is the XS and it just fit:
Next, a couple of tanks that I really liked. The first one is the Sunlit sequins tank. I liked both the black and the blue dusk colors. The fit is TTS as far as tanks go, meaning that I didn't have to size down to a XXS. This is, I think, the black (even if it looks lighter in the pic):
And this must be the blue:
I think that the sequins added more to the design in the blue colorway than the black. I would have bought the black if it weren't for the sequins. I don't care for the sequins on this one, so I don't want to spend more for them. I will probably get it on sale.
The other tank that I realy liked is the Sequin stripe tank. This has been around for a while on the website and I almost ordered it with the 20% off knits promo (before seeing it IRL) but in the end I didn't for some reasons that I don't remember. When I tried it on I regretted and I will probably order it if they do another knit promo AND free shipping. The sequins are very subtle and I really liked the fabric (thin but I appreciate that it isn't clingy, as they say in the description it drapes well) and the scoopneck (very flattering). I had to size down to a XXS in this one (this is the navy. The lemon zest is very pretty too and more bright than it looks online):
Third and last in the sequined tank category, the Stripe sequin tank. Wait, didn't I just write this produt name? No, the one above was "Sequin stripe tank"; this one is "Stripe sequin tank". VERY inventive JCrew! Maybe their name-finder was on vacation that week and Mickey or Jenna stepped in. Anyway, this one is very sparkly, heavy with sequins all around and I was almost afraid to look at the price tag but at $98 it seems pretty fairly priced if you need a high dose of sequins delivered on wide stripes (now it can look that I am making fun of it, but I liked it). Fit is TTS (trying the XS below), very comfortable to wear for a sequined top. The V-neck with wide straps isn't the most flattering on me (they make my top appear bigger because I have pretty broad shoulders) but no doubt that it is pretty:
See also Gigi rocking it here.

The Vintage cotton bandana tee was probably the item from this rollout I was most excited about when I saw it online. They haven't put out a nice graphic or printed tee in a very long time, so I was eager to get this one. After trying it on I couldn't push myself to shell out $42 for a pretty simple tee without checking H&M first (I checked and even if they don't have a similar print, the price of their organic cotton tees actually decreased from last year. I am pretty sure that I paid $12.95 for a graphic tee last year and the same design this year is $9.95, so the price of cotton has nothing to do with the JCrew markup), but I liked it. It fits TTS. I tried both the blue sea (tell me that I am not crazy and there is another color out there called sea blue. Wait, I just got it: sea is the main color and blue is the color of the bandana print) and the ivory azure but I only took a pic of the blue sea. I was actually hoping for a black-ish blue, but it is a true navy. The ivory wasn't sheer, or at least it didn't strike me as being sheer. Trying the XS, it wasn't tight but I wouldn't size down:
The Metallic swing sweater was a big disappointment. It looked so pretty but the fit was totally off. The arms are super-tight and the body is well, super-swingy (that's usually an euphemism for fitting like a tent. It's like when you are looking at real estate and when you see the adjective "cozy" you know that it isn't going to be a palace). Anyway, this is the XS:
Guess was it is also "swingy"? The Linen pintuck shell. I really liked it online, hated it on. This is the XS, size up if you are busty:
Much better was the Spindrift sweatshirt. The first time that I saw it I was drawn to the emerald color but after seeing the navy on ajc in this post I decided to go with navy (it seems incredible but I haven't a navy sweatshirt) and copy her look with the foulard pants. I really liked this top, it feels very cool on. Fits TTS on me (Gigi has experienced upper arms/chest tightness, but I didn't recall feeling it. Maybe if you a bit bigger than me on top, it will feel that way). This is the XS (that you have already seen with the polka-dots skirt but I wanted to show you with jeans since it's more of a casual top):
I am hoping that the navy will go on sale without selling out, I just don't feel like spending $60 in a sweatshirt as much as I like it.

There weren't many woven tops in this rollout and a few of them were online only. The only one that I could try was the Soledad embroided tunic. Not sure why they call it a tunic, it isn't longer than a regular top. I am not in the market for this kind of embroided tops (I have more that I can wear and I prefer Calypso in this department) but this one caught my attention on the website. However, it looked horrible on with those big sleeves flaring out. Not a look that I am going for. This is the XS:
This was the last top (you have already seen the Raindrop lace top, that is getting a lot of love in the blogosphere, in the fitting room part 3 post) and I tried the Retro-dot tunic but I forgot to take pics of this one (size down, it fits huge, especially in the armholes).
I am pretty tired (and I guess you are pretty tired of reading too) and my daughter needs a bath, so I will leave the jackets for one last (short) post. In the meanwhile let me know if you have questions of any of these and please share your thoughts! Oh, and have a nice weekend too!

  3. I like the Spindrift on you and thanks for saving me a return on the Bandana tee. I have 2 Spindrift sweatshirts and I find one is larger than the other, and I just ordered the navy it looks so good on you and ajc.

I politely disagree with you on the price of cotton affecting prices you see it just about everywhere.

  5. I love the spindrift sweatshirt, I received the green yesterday and I think I will keep it even at full price, I will try to catch the others on markdowns.

Thank you so much for the pictures in the past you have posted of the swimsuits and thank you for the sizing advice, I still ordered to large but overall I was super pleased with the designs and feel of the suits. I am hoping I can get the sizing right on the next order.

  7. Thanks for the reviews, Ema. I'm curious what specifically it is you didn't like about the sequins on the black Sunlit Sequins tank.

  9. I laughed at your sequin stripe/stripe sequin comment about the name finder on vacation. Think that person was also out when they named cafe capri in houndstooth wool and cafe capri in wool houndstooth. ;) Thanks for trying all these things for us, helps me a lot with online shopping.
