Snapshots of a Vacation

So I really hope that Starbucks started to offer Pinacolada while I was away because I need my daily dose. Or if not Pinacolada (I don't think that they have a liquor licence) at least Mango Madness, a supersweet and alchool-free mix of mango, cream of coconut and milk that judging from my daughter's addiction would secure them an entire customer base of 4-year-old and up.

Ahhh, vacations... They are always too short, aren't they? I know that it can be boring sometimes to look at somebody's else vacation pictures, so to make things more interesting for you, I made a selection of my favorite outfits (among those that were photographied), in no particular order. My daughter is in many of them because she was quite the diva and she would jump in as soon as she saw my husband take out the camera (not that I didn't want her to be in the vacation pictures but I knew it would be impossible to cut her out for blogging purposes). Here in matching green dresses, at the beach bar:

Me: Calypso dress (old), Jack Rogers sandals. My daughter: Gymboree dress (last summer)

Dinner at the beach restaurant:
Dress: Loft (last summer) Jacket: JCrew Nolita jacket in Great Lakes wash, size XS

Strolling on the (fabulous) Bavaro beach:

Cover-up: Boden

Outside the Italian restaurant, where you could eat while watching a family of flamingoes (my daughter was delighted of course and it quickly became our favorite restaurant, also because the food was delicious):

Calypso tunic, JCrew shorts

In the trees around the restaurant, we also saw but especially heard a woodpecker. A woodpecker! Who knew that the noise of a woodpecker in action could be so loud (it was almost like a jackhammer)?

The last day we took a long walk on the beach early in the morning. The beach had some amazing beds, with canopy-style shades, that were usually occupied by couples (it was actually a partion of the beach reserved to adults so this was our chance to enjoy them, even if only for the pics):

The family part of the beach had also a few daybeds, but no romantic canopies:

Jcrew Vintage cotton V-neck tee in modern red, Lilly Pulitzer bermudas

The following is probably the outfit that I liked the best. I bought this blouse at Calypso along with the linen tee to wear with the fresco pants (that I wore twice but unfortunately didn't get photographied) with the semi-intention of returning it (I had a $50 off coupon with a $150 minimum purchase) but it is too pretty and special and I can also wear it in the city in the summer (I don't see this on the website anymore and it was almost sold-out in stores). The pants are the JCrew toothpicks as you could have probably guessed:

Besides a very high-end resortwear store (that sold Cavalli and other high-end italian brands, probably because there were a lot of Italian tourists as Punta Cana is historically one of the first italian tourist destinations in the Caribbean, along with Cuba), the resort had a small shop that sold "Punta Cana logo" tee shirts. I liked the disco vibe of this black one. Also, isn't it funny when you think about it that the cheap tourist tee shirts is one of the only thing that you can only buy locally these days in our era of global market? This is at the main pool, which was just amazing:

And this is the airport, which was crowded with an incredible hoard of tourists for such a small place on the map:

It was hard to be back in NY yesterday, I was hoping that it would be warm enough not to wear a jacket but I had to reluctantly wear my coat (even if it isn't cold either).
All those Mango Madnesses and Pinacoladas had some not-so-pleasant side effects so you will probably see some extra weight around my tights and belly (it's a miracle that I could still squeeze my legs in the toothpicks on the last day) that hopefully I will shred quickly.

Which one of these pictures/outfits do you prefer? Have you ever been in Punta Cana?

  2. Welcome back Ema, you look great and happy in your pics and your daughter is adorable of course. How cute that she would want to be in all those pictures with you, my little one never likes any pictures (she likes taking them though).
I have been to Punta Cana and it was such a relaxing vacation. I was a little disturbed by the poverty all around it, but everybody seemed happy nevertheless.

  5. DaniBP, thank you! Yes, Punta Cana (Bavaro beach actually) has one of the most beautiful beach landscapes in the world, the palm trees are so tall that they seem to disappear into the sky.

ajc, thanks. Glad that you brought this up because I noticed a real general growth in the country. The last time that we had been there (6 or 7 years ago) I was, as you, shocked by the poverty sourrounding us (and that's one of the reasons that we hadn't been back), but this time I found that the it was much more "civilized", all the houses that we have seen were made in concrete, it seems that there are less people living in cabanas and there were some pretty "modern" commercial centers.

gigi, thank you. Glad that you like the Calypso top. Hope you are feeling better.

JillfromMN, it was the Paradisus Punta Cana (hands down the best all inclusive resort I have ever stayed at). Congratulations on your honeymoon, have you decided where are you staying?
