The Sateen Soiree Jacket

Today I lived in the fear that the UPS guy with the first of the two Jcrew purchases that I made last week wouldn't show up before 6 pm. Normally I'm the one who receives the packages, even late, but I totally forgot that I had a movie night with a girlfriend tonight and I had to leave at 6. My husband agreed to come back from work earlier so that I could go and when the package didn't arrive at noon (UPS makes two deliveries a day, one around noon and one in the late afternoon-early evening) I started to sweat. If you have been reading this blog for a while you know that my husband doesn't necessarly approve of my spending habits, especially when it comes to Jcrew so I really didn't want him to get the Jcrew box instead of me. I don't order on the website very often because he can immediately see what I buy on the credit card online statement (by the way, not to channel Sophie Kinsella's Becky, but couldn't credit cards companies give us, wives and girlfriends with illecit spending habits, a break and NOT mention on their statements what we spend on in the most embarassing details? Like it wasn't hard enough to smuggle shoes in the apartment, they have to tell our husbands that those $300 spent at a mysterious Chuckies went in a MIU MIU pair? Thank you Amex for getting us into troubles. Seriously, is there a class suit against Amex for violation of wives privacy that I can sign up for? If not, it means that the world is ruled by husbands...)
Just when I was trying to come up with a backup plan for the delivery (a plan that would only work with the complicity of the doorman), the UPS guy showed up (around 4) and saved my day.

Anyway, I ordered two sateen soiree jackets, one in spice olive and one in slate in two different sizes, a 0 and a 2. I had tried the spice olive in store when it was $99 and although I really liked it, I wasn't ready to spend that amount on a jacket because I don't get to wear jackets very often. It's funny but at $39.99 the same raisoning becomes an enabler (hey, I don't have many jackets, I should wear them more often, I should buy this one) and I pulled the trigger. In order to get the free shipping I also bought two pairs of the cocktail capris in a petite size that I couldn't try in store (the regular 0 was way too big on me).

Now, I thought that it would be useful to post a quick review of the sateen soiree blazer as many JCAs mentioned it in the "sale watch" post last week and there were different opinions about it (it seems to be a love it or hate it item). I tried it on very quickly this afternoon to post IRL pics in case some of you want to take advantage of the 20% off coupon, which makes this jacket even more of a bargain.

First of all, this was the first time that I have ordered a jacket from Jcrew and I was impressed with the wrapping and the fact that they came on a hunger (you are maybe used to it but I didn't expect that). The jackets were in pristine conditions and clearly they had never left the warehouse before:

The details are beautiful, look at the lining with the pink inserts (the inside of the sleeves are also pink, actually a bummer that it'is not supposed to be shown):

Now the fit. The most important thing to know about this blazer is the lenght. It is short (that, and the fabric, is why it's supposed to be an evening jacket, I guess) and if you have a long torso it might not work for you.
Also it's not very fitted through the waist but the overall look is very nice because of the shortness. I know that it looks plain on the website pics but it definitively has a little something, it's a fit that you don't see quite often. Here I'm wearing it with the stretch cocktail capris:

I put the Cate slingbacks on just to show the proportions (I know that the color is not good):

In store I tried it with the orange gateau skirt and the ensemble looked gorgeous. It works well with a full skirt IMO. The closest that I have to the gateau skirt is this cotton-taffeta A-line skirt from early fall 2008, but really, the effect is not the same:

The fabric wrinkled a little bit during the pic session, which means that it will definitively wrinkle a lot if you wear it for an entire evening. Which means that it will probably need dry cleaning after each wear to look fresh. If this really bothers you, this jacket is not for you.
Regarding the spice olive color, because of the tissue (sateen) I find it a little bit lighter than the same color in the cardigans. It's more light chartreuse than spice olive if you master the Jcrew color palette lol. I didn't try the slate on because the 0 is clearly my size, so I'm not going to bother (plus, I think that the spice olive is more of an unexpected color for this kind of jacket and it contributes to its charme).

I urge to try this jacket, especially now that it comes to the price of a tee shirt. For me it's definitively worth it a try.

Do you own or have you tried this jacket? What do you think?

  1. Did you like the grey, or no? I would never have paired it w/the gateau, but you are right. I think it can look really good.

I love the olive color on you. That works! And you got a great bargain. Plus, thank you UPS for cooperating!

  2. The jacket is cute but I don't like the fact that the fabric wrinkles easily. Dressy wear and wrinkles??? Not a good look. And if it needs to be dry cleaned or steamed professionally after each wear like you suggest the $40 jacket quickly becomes an expensive jacket!

Thanks for the post and your feedback. I do enjoy reading item reviews.

  3. Thank you for the review! I recently ordered one and am waiting for it to arrive -- it helps to know other people's experience with an item when you're trying to decide whether to keep it. Any thoughts about when/where you'll wear it (evenings, casual weekends, etc.)?

  4. I just tried one on in store last week, but for 99.99, I didn't love it that much. I think I need to keep checking online for popback. It is a fun jacket. I would love with just a white tee, jeans & fun heels or flats.

  6. The colored lining gives a nice touch, what color is the lining in the slate?

  7. Pakcola - the lining on the grey is a pepto bismol pink

  8. Well, that shade pink does not sound pretty. Hmmm...cute jacket but not sure...still on the fence. If it was an additional 30% off I would bite. 20% not so much...will wait and see what the new arrivals are IF they put them online!

  9. Soooo cracking up at the UPS story! That is the EXACT position I am in with UPS and my husband coming home from work!! Pretty much ANY time he comes home early, whether it's so I can get somewhere or just because, I am expecting a package! I NEVER get any UPS packages before 3pm ... and sometimes as late as 6pm. That doesn't leave very much time to hide the box and all the packaging!! ;)

I'm expecting my Soiree today ... hopefully I did the right thing by sizing down. I'm getting the pink color... I'm kind-of a pink girl!

  10. OMG, I thought I was the only one who had to hide her JCrew boxes from her husband! This is the story of my life! I am more than a little embarrassed that my UPS man knows more about me than my own husband -- that I am a JCrew junkie.

The only way I have found around the credit card bill thing is to open a JCrew card account in my name. That way, only I see the bills b/c I get to the mailbox first. I think my husband would seriously freak if he knew how much I actually buy. It's a sickness.

I keep telling myself that one day I will get bored with JCrew (like I have with other retailers) or decide that I have enough tops and sweaters and jewelry, but alas, every season something else shows up that I absolutely HAVE to have.

I am ashamed and for these and all my sins I am truly sorry.....

  11. I forgot to comment on the soiree blazer...

I have this in (what a surprise) all 3 colors. I have worn the pink and the grey more than once already and I have to say that I love it. I have been looking for a more structured alternative to a cardigan for the summer and this really fits the bill. It looks better with the sleeves pushed up and is a perfect contrast to a lot of the embellished T-shirts this season.

I think this is a really well-made piece and for the price right now it is such a STEAL!!! I recommend sizing down for a more tailored fit.

  13. I bought the slate and the olive and unfortunately they're both going back :( I need an 8 for my shouders which left the rest very boxy/unfitted looking. Oh well!

  14. Sorry for not replying earlier ladies, I didn't want my husband to read the content of this post by accident (a really stupid way to get busted).

Gigi, I haven't even took the grey out of the plastic bag as it's clear that the size 2 would be too big in the shoulders for me. Also, I think that the olive color is an easier to pair for the evening as it goes well with black and navy (and jeans). The grey would be nice with brights and pastels but I don't have many brights for the evening.
Anon, I perfectly get your point. I don't plan to wear this that much (that's why I didn't buy it at $99) but it's a nice option to have when I need to wear a dressier jacket, so it remains a bargain compared to the dry cleaning cost.
TUMC, hope that it works for you, let us know. I definitively plan to wear it as an evening jacket.
Heidi, do you mean that the price went down from $99 to $39 in one week?
Ina, I didn't really bought this one to wear with jeans but I think that the vintage slim jean would work great with this jacket.
Summer, you're right, not sure that this jacket would fit you well as you're tall but small-boned (not sure it's the right ord, sorry) and sizing up wouldn't work.
Lindsey B, the situation with the UPS guy is pretty exceptional in my case as I don't order often and I'm always at home when he comes. But I totally sympathize with you!
laurenmarie10, I think that I can say the same thing about my doorman (the UPS guy actually leaves the packages to the doorman so technically it's the doorman who makes the deliveries to me). The Jcrew credit card is a good idea, but how do you pay the bills? My workaround is to pay cash as much as possible (I have a small personal account from when I used to work).
And don't worry, your sins will be forgiven on this blog...
Re. the grey jacket, what do you pair it with?
Julie, bummer. Well, I guess it doesn't work for everyone.

  15. Not sure about the markdown - I tried it on in store and I swear the tag said 99.99. Maybe it had not been marked on the tag? Maybe it's less online - since the online & B&M aren't always the same (althought usually B&M are less). But I didn't pursue getting the correct price since I didn't really want to spend $100 on it. Now that it's $40...which to get - shell or slate (not avail in olive in my size)?

  16. Heidi, I would say that pink would be nicer with jeans if you plan to wear it that way. But why don't you order both, since you need $150 to get the free shipping + the 20% off? With the code is only $33!!!

  17. Last year the Fiona was still marked at $99 in store but was online was $39. Called the store and when it rang up it came up to $39. The clerk was shocked. Tag had not been marked down yet...online it had been that price for at least a week.

  18. Ema,

With my JC card, I pay the bill online from an account that I manage. I guess it helps that I pay most of the household bills except our mortgage, insurance, etc. All of my paycheck (which is minuscule because of our tax bracket) goes into this account, but without regular capital investments from my hubby that sucker would be gone! We have lots of expenses, so I have been able to bury the JC bills successfully so far!

Regarding the Soiree blazer in grey, last week I wore it with my broken-in chinos (khaki), an embellished T-shirt from last winter with the grey satin bow on the shoulder, grey patent belt and the Palma Patent ankle wraps in dusk. I also plan to pair it with the molten metallic tank in silver with white denim pants. Today I am wearing the olive color Soiree with the metallic tank in gold (they look GREAT together), denim pencil skirt, roughed-out leather belt and vachetta strappy heels.

The weather here in So California has been gloomy all month so I am still layering...
