The sale was pretty good in my opinion, especially if you are looking for shoes. This is what I brought home:

From left to right: black cashmere turtleneck from the current season ($75), Michelle cardi ($40, pricey but I regretted not buying more of these in FS and now are really gone), 3 pairs of Marjorie ballet flats (I know, I know 2 would have been enough but for $45 a pair), Vintage Roaster booties (major score at $99) and Script coat in antique stone (another score at $149 but it's a size 2).
The shoes were definitively the best part of the sale, even if the prices could have been better (the flats were $65 with the exception of the Marjorie, heels $99, booties $99 and tall boots $149, wellies $25. They also had Hunter boots for $75). They were mostly from spring/summer 09 but they also had some current Fall style (these with little defects but nothing serious). I got there early so the selection was good, I don't know if later in the day or in the sale it's going to be the same.
The coat selection was good too, I don't know the Jcrew coat styles by heart but the the yellow Winnie, the Ladyday (in white) and the Camino (in sea salt and dusty blossom) were definitively there. And the script coat of course. They were all $149. Suiting blazers were $99 (by the way, there are no bottoms in this sale) and I almost bought the Butterscotch wool flannel schoolboy blazer (same price) but I'm happy that I didn't because it wasn't such a good deal and I definitively don't need it.
The sweaters were a hit or miss. Not as many marked with a big SAMPLE word marked on the back like in the previous one but a lot of oldies. They had a good selection of jackies (summer colors) but they were $40 (and I paid $31 in the summer for mine). If you go there I would stick to those that have a tag and are current overstock, because the other ones can have holes or some sort of defect (not to mention that often the size is not and you cannot try them on).
If you decide to go there I have a few tips that I hope can make your shopping experience better:
1) Arrive at least 15 minutes before the opening in the morning. Ten minutes make a big difference, people tend to arrive around the exact opening time and you can't imagine how fast the line build up.
2) If you can, leave your coat at home and have only a small purse with you. No coat means no coat check-in and less time in the line.
3) Go with a pre-fixed budget (I left my credit card at home and took only cash with me) and take a pocket calculator with you, so you can make up your mind BEFORE you are at the register (the mistake that I made this morning, I decided when I was at the register). $40 here and $75 there easy sum up to a thousand dollars.
4) Know your prices and your sizes before you go. It's good to have a good knowledge of the current and past stock so you know what is more worthy it.
5) Check every item for holes and defects BEFORE going to the register. I had 5 cashmere sweaters that I was considering and each of them had a small hole that I hadn't seen at first. The shoes come in plastic bags and generally there is a handwritten note that describes the flaw (ex. sole worn, this is something that I learned when I came home, I didn't notice while I was there).
So am I happy with what I bought? Yes, but I regret leaving behind the black Metropolitan suede ankle boots for $99. I should have got those instead of the third pair of flats (and I could take home both for lack of funds!) That's what I mean when I said know your prices when you go there. I didn't know that these were still $250 FP on the website and I clearly made the wrong decision.
And because I don't know when I will be back blogging, I will leave you with a surprise. A new tee from the new Holiday collection (retails for $39.50):

This is the love child of the rosette tee from last spring (the pink roses are textured like in the rosette tee) and the current "bouquet" tee. Even if I have the rosette tee and I don't wear it that much I couldn't resist the color combination of this one (btw, it's slub cotton and not ringspun). In case you are interested, the style is 20455 and I bought a XS.
I apologize in advance if I won't be able to reply to your questions before tomorrow morning (as you know hubby is coming back from his trip today and OMG! I have to hide all this sfuff before he arrives!)
Ema, you got some great bargains. I LOVE the coat and wish I was in NY to go to the sample sale. I bought that same rose tee yesterday. It will look so pretty under your new Michelle cardigan!
ReplyDeleteHaha! Hide your stuff! Under the bed is always good! ;)
ReplyDeleteGreat scores at the sale, good shopping tips too. You will love the Vintage Roadster boots, I have them in both colors! I am bad, I know, but they are so stylish and practical.
what great finds for you! i have to admit im pretty jealous of all those great shoes! and that coat is fab! i love that tshirt "love child" that you mentioned! its super cute! :)
ReplyDeleteI love all your purchases! The coat is gorgeous! Do they have more shoes at this sample sale than in the past?
ReplyDeleteLOVE the new tee~ very cute! I can never seem to get enough of their tees!
ReplyDeleteGreat deals at the sample sale! I wish we had something like that (or a distribution clearance center, or even an outlet) around here! :(
Thanks for the shopping tips! :) I always seem to get caught-up in the moment when I am shopping!! :-P
Hi Ema:
ReplyDeleteYou were smart by going early...I would have loved the black suede boots, but they weren't there anymore when I went. I went to the sample sale later in the afternoon...It was my first, and last time going. I was looking for heels, and they were all $99, even last seasons, and last years as well as some curent styles. They should have had the older styles less than the current. Some of the cashmere sweaters that were $75.00, I paid less for when they were on final sale with the extra 20% off. All in all except for a few current items...you can get most items cheaper on J Crew's website, and you can return. No more sample sales for me...but loved everything you bought!
OMG. That tee is just overdone. Wow.
ReplyDeleteooh...ema, fantastic finds! now i regret not joining you--those vintage roadsters and a pair of metropolitans would have made putting up with a whiny toddler worth it! :)
ReplyDeletei might try and get there first thing friday morning and hope that they restock (wishful thinking!)
thanks for the scoop! will email you about next week's sale!
Oh I LOVE what you bought from the sample sale. Why do I have to be out of town this week?! I would have definitely joined you at the sample sale, maybe another time.
ReplyDeleteI'm loving the new tee too. I can't wait to get to a B&M soon and see the new arrivals!
Looks like u had a great haul at the sample sale! wish they would have one in my part of the world:) those ballet flats are adorable! i love ur tips on the side bar!
ReplyDeleteEma: Thank you for the post! Your experience reminds me of shopping at the clearance center, good finds on some yummy J. Crew items. Maybe I will make a checklist on what to do if you visit a clearance center. :)
ReplyDeleteThat tee? Will. Be. Mine. (I. Hope.) ;)
Take your time on commenting...life is not just blogging, and we all get that!!!
Thanks for reporting your goodies!!! Love seeing what you buy, I love your taste. GREAT scores on the ballet flats, I would have scooped up at least two pairs myself. Plus, I LOVE THAT NEW TEE!! Even though I don't really *need* any more tees, like you said, I just love the color combination here on this new tee:)
ReplyDeleteBtw: are those Marjorie ballet flats comfy?? I never have tried them, but may need to. Darn--i wish there was a sample sale around here, or a way that others could purchase items!! I would love to buy a pair of the flats!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteshopalot, thank you. And you are right, the Michelle looks great with the new tee (see next post)
ReplyDeleteDaniBP, I REALLY had to hide the shoes under the bed because my husband rang the door just when I finished that sentence (luckily, he didn't have the keys, otherwise I would have got busted).
I saw you sporting the Vintage Roadster, maybe I need a black pair too!
ashley, thank you!
Kathy, yes, definitively more shoes but not a lot from the current catalog (I was lucky with the Roadster). The heels at $99aren't worth it in my opinion because you can have the same sale price on the website if you're patient enough (I left a pair of Charlie)
MMM,I hope that the tips help ;-).
luv fashion, I totally agree with you that they should have had the older styles less than the current. We should write Mickey about this!
Summer, it can look that way but I love it so much that I'm wearing it with my pajamas!
stefanie, I'm sure you'll find great deals on Friday.
Summerilla, yes it's the wrong week to be out of town ;-). But I bet that as soon as you hit the store and see the new arivals you won't be regretting the sample sale, there are some beautiful stuff out there.
The Owl Closet, I might add a rule or two soon ;-)
dinagideon, I would love to visit the clearance center but NC is a little bit far ... And thanks for understanding ;-)
mrs anketell, they are super-comfy, but I reccomend to size down, they run long (I'm usually a 7 and the 6H is perfect, even a little bit on the loose side). I'm in love with the nude color, I might use them as stilish slippers.
