Beach Wedding: Advice Needed!

OK, so my husband and I are leaving in two days for a long weekend in the Caribbean to attend a friends wedding. We are very excited not only because of the destination (St. Martaan, where I have never been) but also because this is the first time since our daughter was born that we leave her at home (with grandma, who, as you know, came from Paris to spend part of the summer with us and babysit when needed). So it is both a social and a romantic gateway for us.

I have never been to a beach wedding before and I have no idea what people wear to this kind of occasions but the dress code on the invitation says "casual beach dressing", so I take it as a clue that high heels and taffeta gowns are not appropriate.
I am pretty much set on what I am going to wear since I had some time to think about it but I will show you what my options are and I would love to hear which one you prefer.
While looking for a dress to wear at the wedding I had two criterias in mind: no silk (because I am going to sweat in the Caribbean in July) and I wanted something inexpensive (under $100) and beach-y. Also, I wanted to avoid the bridesmaid look, so I excluded pretty much all the JCrew "parties and occasions" offerings.
Actually I thought that I had found my dress quite a while ago on ebay. I always thought that the Jcrew Lucca dress from Spring 10 would be the perfect dress to wear to a beach wedding (if you don't remember it, don't worry: pics will follow). It was a store-only dress and as much as I liked it I didn't want to pay $95 for it (it seemed really overpriced); but of course when I missed it on sale I regretted not buying it FP. I stalked ebay for almost a year for this dress, that came in light blue and pale pink, and when one finally popped up in my size this spring and for a decent price ($49) I jumped on it even if it wasn't my favorite blue colorway but the pink one. I already knew about the wedding (even if wasn't sure that we would go) and I thought that the pink colorway would actually be a better choice for a wedding (it's a little more elegant, while the light blue one was more casual). What I like about this dress is that is a simple strapless tubular dress, but the ruffles make it dressy (the fabric is a stretchy cotton). It looks better belted so if I decide to wear it I will probably need a sash:

I accessorized it with with the bubble necklace in soft violet (almost a perfect match):

The problem with this dress is that my husband didn't like it (he said that I look fat in it, boo), so I started to look for another option. Also, I think it would be perfect for the ceremony part but a little bit under-dressed for the reception. I was considering a few Lily Pulitzer dresses but between the price, the prints that I wasn't in love with and the fact that they didn't look really "me" I never pulled the trigger on any of them.
So when I went to Italy one of my "shopping goals" was to find another dress to wear at the wedding.
I found two actually. The first one is a strapless maxi-dress in a beautiful turquoise color with a "Roberto Cavalli" type of print. It's a no-brand dress (I bought it in a little boutique) but it is really a showstopper and even if it isn't the kind of dress that I would normally wear I thought it was worth to buy it just for the wedding (it was also quite inexpensive):

I have tried to accessorize it with my H&M knockoff of the turquoise bubble necklace but it is too long, I think, and fights with the print on the bodice so I think that I will wear it with a shorter one that was a Xmas present from my aunt:

The other dress that I bought it's a Zara dark navy empire waist short dress with a beautiful beading on the bodice. I bought it not exclusively for the wedding but to have something dressy to bring on vacation with me. It has a overlay of faux-chiffon that makes it flowy and beachy:

The problem with this dress is that it could be a little bit hot because of the lining. Also, is more of an evening dress and the wedding is at 5 (I don't think that we will get a chance to go back into our room and change for dinner, otherwise I would probably wear the first one for the ceremony and this one for the reception). I could also wear it at the reharsal dinner the day before.

The last option is a Calypso St. Barth silk plisse dress with "rope" gold neckline. I am going to take it with me but most likely I won't wear it at the wedding because it's black and I don't think that anyone will show up in black at a beach wedding (if you had another experience please speak up):

That's it. As far as shoes option I am going to take my Espadrilles to wear with the short dresses (seen with the third dress) and a pair of flat golden thongs (the congetti ones from last year). I am pretty much set on wearing the second dress (the turquoise maxi), that can easily go from the beach to the reception to the dance floor, but let me know what you think and if you have another preference or know something that I should know when attending a beach wedding.

Thanks for your time, I appreciate your comments!

  1. Wow, have FUN at this beach wedding!! I prefer the 1st option---LOVE that dress, it looks great on you, perfect color, and the necklace with it matches perfectly:) I also loved the 2nd dress, but that would be my backup option.......

  2. p.s. just reread your post and there is NO WAY you look anything but AMAZING in the 1st dress!!! Maybe he doesn't like it, because it makes you look awesome and he doesn't want any guys hitting on you......lol!!!!!

  3. okay last commnet: IF you decide the 1st dress, I don't think i would do the bubble necklace, too much with a dress that has ruffles...instead, get yourself a pair of beautiful, show stopper earrings to go with the dress:)

  4. I think the turquoise dress is perfect for a beach wedding and it looks great on you! JMHO

  5. Oh, and I would go with the second choice of turquoise necklace. While the first one is nice too, it kind of disappears into the background of the dress.

  6. have fun at the wedding!

  7. Of course we haven't met so I don't really know you, but I think the Calypso dress is the most 'you'. It's classic, classy, and you look comfortable in it. Yes, it's black, but I've been to beach weddings and some women do wear black to them. The first one is pretty and a good choice for a beach wedding -- AND you look GREAT in it, don't listen to hubby! -- but I'm not digging the ruffles. It feels too LA to me, if that makes sense. Look in your closet a little more? Sometimes the perfect outfit pops out at the last minute! You must have other beautiful Calypso dresses in there.

  9. I love the first dress, but I hear think my hubby wouldn't like it either. Men just don't get all those ruffles!
I love the calypso dress- stylish and classic! Its ok that it's black, i think plenty of women wear black, I just got back from Mexico and plenty of women wore black to dinner.
Have fun in St. Maarten, they have great beaches and great food!

  10. I think the first dress is the best option! I love the bubble necklace with it as well...however, my husband wouldnt like it either bc he hates ruffle and bows. So... as my husband always says "you dress for other women anyway" and quite frankly he is right! Men just dont"get" fashion! And you look far from fat, your body is fabulous and I think you rock the dress. If you dont want to choose that onr though bc of your husband I would go with the Calypso one- it looks elegant and beachy to me- besides the length of the maxi would annoy me in the sand and surf:) Have a great time!

  11. I love, love the Calypso dress on you. Many times I thought you shoudl not wear black to daytime wedding only to end up being the only woman in light colored dress. Calypso dress is simple, elegant and it fits you so well.

  12. I like the 2nd Dress for a beach wedding with the 2nd necklace. I would probably wear some gold metallic wedges with that! The first dress is lovely as well but, the blue looks lovely with your complexion.

  13. I love the first dress for the wedding. I might change the necklace for a gold necklace (with gold sandals) and certainly don't think you look fat! Sheesh!

The second dress is beautiful but I see that more with a straw tote doing some touristy things and maybe going for drinks.

The third dress looks very elegant but doesn't scream "beach wedding" to me but certainly reception or dinner. (Honestly what would it take to bring it along and slip into it for the reception? I would!)

The final dress is classic! That dress could go shopping or out to dinner- Love it!

Have a wonderful time on your romantic interlude! Just got back from one myself and feel so recharged!

    xx

  14. I think you look great in all three dresses. No way would I ever think the first dress made you look fat. I think it's a gorgeous, fun dress and would be perfect for a beach wedding.
That said, I also love the turquoise one. The color, fabric pattern and fit look perfectly beach wedding appropriate to me.

I hope you have a lovely time and would love to see photos when you return.

  15. Oops, somehow I missed the fourth dress. I still vote for the second, but I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.

  16. This is my first time stopping in...definitely going to follow along...lots of fun seeing all your different options and as someone obsessed w fashion..I love weighing in...
    SO...all that said.
I think the last dress (black) is the best option...it is an unusual and summery fabric and the gold roping detail makes it much more beachy vibed then if it were just solid black... I also think it fits you impeccably...loving the open neckline...I would do a fun bright gold and/or turquoise earring....and same w shoes.
The others were lovely on you...all of them were really nice on you..but my fav was the last.
Have a fabulous time...I have a 21 month old..and treasure the rare opportunities of nights out w the hubs sans baby...so important:)

  17. Ema:
I read your blog daily but have never commented. The Calypso dress is the prettiest one for the wedding. Yes, it is black but you could wear colorful earrings and play with the shoes. The turqoise dress is perfect for shopping but I think you will regret wearing it to the wedding. I get the whole pink ruffly thing, so skip that for your husband's sake , but bring it along for shopping, etc, and the other dress just isn't right. Perhaps, like Dinster said, look again in your closet. Sometimes we try so hard, the perfect outfit is within reach and we just don't see it. You have a huge wardrobe.
    Enjoy your trip.

  18. I vote for the turquoise maxi! and by the way, I pass Cavalli every day, and yours is the kind of dress he would do (1) if he had talent, and (2) if he had you advising him.

  19. I LOVE the turquoise maxi! And think it's perfection for the beach wedding. And you look fabulous in it.

  20. Love the Lucca dress, that would be my first choice. Barring that, I think the turquoise looks great, but is the wedding actually on the beach? If so, I would agree that the maxi length in the sand may be difficult. If so, I'd go with the Calypso. You have some great options!

  21. I love the long dress on you and the colour would be amazing in the setting.
I think the first dress is pretty but the cut is really odd under the bust, I don't think it flatters you and you have a great figure.

  22. My preference style-wise is the Calypso dress. The strapless dress looks great too, but I love the neckline and fit of the black dress.

  23. I like either the Lucca dress or dress al Roberto Cavalli, perhaps leaning more toward the "Cavalli" one, though both look great on you. I also prefer these colors for a daytime, beach, casual wedding.

  24. You look awesome in dress #1. You definitely don't look fat! My pick would be the Calypso.

I was also remembering that you had some awesome dresses when you went to CA last year. There could be some additional options there.

Can't wait to see what you pick!

  25. No black! I LOVE the first dress! It is very beachy! No, you do not look fat!

  26. I suggest considering two other dresses in your closet: the green Rebecca Taylor dress, and the Lilly Pulitzer long-sleeved one-shoulder dress you bought a few months ago. I know you said you didn't want to wear silk at the wedding, but the Calypso dress is silk so perhaps you'll consider wearing the Rebecca Taylor one. I think either one of those dresses would be perfect for a beach wedding.

  27. First dress.... The "cavali" looks amazing with gift necklace too! Have fun!

  28. Hands down the Calypso one!
    :)

  29. WOW~ decisions, decisions!!!

I don't think you can go *wrong* with any of them! But with that said... I think I like the last option. Even though it's black, I like the rope detailing (very beach-y)and with some cute shoes and colored jewelry like turquoise or coral maybe- it would look even more smashing than it already does!!

The maxi dress is stunning as well but I'm not sure if I would like a long dress in the sand at a beach wedding!?! Maybe I'm wrong though!?

AND... you certainly don't look "fat" in the first dress!! But that's totally something that my husband would say as well! :-P Men!! They just don't get ruffles (or bows, or sequin, or belts, etc.)! ;)

Most of all- HAVE A BLAST!!! You'll look lovely regardless of what you wear and I know you'll enjoy your time away! =)

  30. I love them all and live at the beach, so we've been to our share of beach weddings. My favorite is the first and last options with the black calypso being my favorite. The turquoise is pretty, but I feel that the top of it makes it look too casual for a wedding. Looks too much like a dressy beach coverup. You look fabulous in the pink dress and not fat at all! The black calypso is beautiful and is my fave! Have fun!

  31. I like all of them except the navy one...a little too conservative...I think your husbamd does not like the pink ruffly one because it does not specifically accentuate your waist....whatever. Maybe you got a "feeling" when you went to the location about what to wear? I hope you take a shawl or cover up just to avoid a sunburn.

  32. I vote for the gorgeous beachy turquoise dress with the 2nd necklace. Perfect for a beach wedding!
