Red, White and Blue Weekend (Vive la France!)

This past weekend New York celebrated Bastille Day. Even if technically Bastille Day is the 14th of July, the city celebrates on the weekend before when the 14th falls on a weekday like this year. As you know the colors of the French flag are the same than the ones of the American flag, with the difference that the blue is a lighter blue.

I wasn't really thinking "Bastille Day" when I wore my Zara striped maxi-dress on Saturday, but I accidentally wore the colors of the flag (I had blue shoes). I know that you have already seen the Zara dress but I accessorized it with red touches and felt very chic:

The bracelet is the Wide resin bangle in maraschino cherry. I love this bangle and the price is right. I have a small wrist but it doesn't feel oversized. The color is a beautiful red with just a hint of pink, very summery.
My pedicure was a matching summery red (OPI's Big Hair ... Big Nails from the Texas Collection). It looks quite sheer in the bottle but two layers are enough to provide coverage and the color is sooo yummy:

By the way, this color is almost undistinguishable in the bottle from OPI Guy meets Gal-Veston, but I tried both at the nail salon and the latter has a slight pinky finish, while Big Hair...Big Nails has a more orange-y finish. Both are very pretty though.

But yesterday I wore red, white and blue on purpose because we were meeting friends to celebrate Bastille Day. I hesitated and almost wore the striped dress again but it was VERY hot and I didn't know if I wanted to be in a maxi all day long, so I opted for a pair of shorts and a "French" tee. The shorts are the Oxford shorts in fresh orange. I don't know if this color was available online as I bought them in store and it appears to be sold-out online. These are a size 2 (they are very comfortable but wrinkle like crazy):

One of the coolest thing that you can do in the summer in NYC is to head to Brooklyn and celebrate Bastille Day on Smith Street between Bergen and Pacific, that is converted in a stretch of South of France for the occasion, with a petanque tournament (the biggest in the country), live music, a guillotine and Ricard or Lillet (two French "aperitifs") sold in the street. The celebration has become very popular and you can barely walk but the athmosphere is unique. The best part is that if you go early enough, the sponsors (Ricard and Lillet) give away a free gift. Two years ago I got a Ricard tee-shirt (that I still use to sleep), but this year they had Panama hats! My husband got the last one (he is a lucky guy) and a guy in the street gave his to me because I was wandering around with a Ricard in my hand (sometimes it pays to be a woman):

Now that I think about it, the Lillet hat would have been better because it had a red gros-grain instead of the navy one and it would have looked gorgeous with my Zara dress, but I will content myself with the Ricard one. I actually prefer to sport "Ricard" (that I like and drink, even at home) than "Lillet" (that I am not a big fan of) on my hat!

Anybody else celebrated Bastille Day in Brooklyn yesterday?
As I said I will be back soon with a post on my upcoming trip to a wedding in the Caribbean and I will need your help to choose my outfit!

  3. Love your outfits, they look like they were perfect for the festivities! And the Panama hat was a great giveaway, I'm sure it will come in handy in the future.
