Milly Love

At the end of my post on the JCrew holiday party collection I told you that I had already found my party dress and that it isn't a JCrew dress. Well, it is Milly. Some of you have probably seen my guest post on Gigi's blog some time ago with my Milly picks (see here). I have always loved Milly but this year she really got it right and if I had the budget I would have happily bought the entire Fall collection, it is so sophisticated and feminine, with a lot of references to YSL and the 70s. Also the quality of the Milly's clothes is outstanding (especially the fabrics, they look so luxurious IRL) and (listen to this) they are MADE IN THE USA. How many clothes are made in the western countries these days? So, it is more expensive than JCrew of course but if you wait for a sale you can get something of very high quality that will last in your closet and is made in the USA.

So, I waited and waited and waited and finally one of the items that I was eyeing went on sale during the Saks pre-sale a couple of weeks ago:

I am typically a size 2 in Milly and not a 0, so I was ready to pull the trigger on the 2 but I happened to walk by the store (which is on Madison Avenue and is the only Milly store in the US so far) one day and I tried the spaghetti version of this dress in a size 0 and it fit perfectly. Only the 2 was available on the website so I went to Saks (I had to go anyway) and the only size that they had in stock was a 0. You know the end of the story.

The dress is the perfect cocktail/party dress, it is elegant but also a bit flirty and it has the right amount of sparkle in the fabric. I was a bit worried about the length because it looks super-short on the model but on me is knee-length which means that I can justify the purchase because I can still wear it when I am older and less comfortable with showing my legs (it turn out that the model is 5'11" so everything looks short on her).

The color is called eggplant but it reads as navy (is the same navy as the JCrew wild blackberry). The only purplish thing is the beautiful lining (alas, it isn't silk but a poly satin. It feels like silk though):

As you can see the wrap is a faux-wrap, which means that I don't have to worry about it opening when I walk.
I can wear this dress to a multitude of events and I am going to break it out in two weeks for my BF birthday party.
I also love the retro vibe of the Vivi rhinestones dress (this is teeny, I would need to size up to a 4) and the simplicity of this shoulder-bow dress. But there are just so many beautiful dresses to chose from and the spring collection is here and full of beautiful prints. Check it out here.

Do you like Milly?

  1. Your new dress is is very pretty and perfect on you. You can wear it to a lot of occasions for years! I love Trina Turk, also made in America, and she has a boutique about 15 minutes from my house where I found a great LBD-which was lacking in my wardrobe. Happy Thanksgiving!!!

  2. The dress looks so much better on you than on the model. Seeing the J Crew photo I would never have given it a second thought!

  5. I love Milly. The line is carried at a high end department store here called Holt Renfrew. I am always drawn to the clothes and I try everything on but always it is too short for me, and even the proportions seem suited to a more petite woman.
The dress is terrific on you and I think for such quality it is great value!

  6. JulieStyles, thank you! I love Trina Tunk too but it is one of those brands that I don't actively follow. I mean, I like to browse their racks when I am at Bloomingdales but I never became "obsessed" with some of their clothes. Good to know that they are made in the USA too. Great find on the LBD.
    Happy Thanksgiving to you!

Sue, I have to say that I had seen this dress in store firts and then looked for it online, otherwise I wouldn't have noticed it either. You ar right, the model doesn't do this dress justice (not saying that I am better than the model, but she is a giant and I think this style looks better on petites)

Louise, thanks! Yes, I believe than Milly must be very expensive in Canada.

wellfedfred, your comment cracked me up! Well, if not this year maybe next year I will have an event worthy of the dress!

DaniBP, I am surprised! I find their hemlines to be not too short in general but you are taller so maybe they are on you. Bummer!

  8. While I had heard of Milly, I never checked out their line until I read this post. Your new dress is gorgeous! I checked out their website and I fell in love with several dresses - all the more exciting that the line is made in America!
