I know, I know, some time in the summer I swore that I wouldn't add any more stripes to my closet, but you know what? I don't actually own that many striped tops that I can wear in wintertime, since my two vintage beateau tops have developped holes and have been confined to loungewear (sadly).
Or at least that's my justification for succombing to the Silk scoopneck blouse in Seine stripe. This top has a mesmerizing power on me and each time that I see the banner over at the JCA blog (which is, several times a day) I am immediately drawn to the bottom right corner that shows the outfit with this top and the orange Minnies. So yesterday I decided that I would just go and get it (luckely my size was still available at the Collection store so I didn't have to go too far).
Let me immediately get out there in case you don't know that this top is not made in silk but rayon. I don't know how they can advertise it as a "silk scoopneck" and get away with it but in my opinion anybody who buys this top is entitled to return it (even after 30 days) as misrepresented on the website.
Second, it seems overpriced to charge $98 for a rayon top, which is a substitute for the more expensive natural fibers, when silk tops go for almost the same price at JCrew. I actually became curious and found an interesting article over at MSN Money that explains how rayon prices have surged as of late. But even if we take into cnsideration the increase in the price of rayon, this top remains overpriced and I am sure that it will be around for much less on sale.
Even knowing this, I had to have it. Maybe it's the evocative power of the word "Seine", or maybe it is just that it feels a lot "me".
This is the 0, my regular size. It fits perfectly and I like the 3/4 sleeves. I also really like where it hits me and the fact that it isn't boxy but doesn't become too narrow around the hips as some tops do:
I thought that the navy color of the stripes would be difficult to pair but it really reads as navy and this morning I wore it with my cashmere shawl cardigan in navy and my toothpick cords in (guess?) navy:
The other color in the top is identical to the saddle color in case you are wondering.
This is a detail of the neckline to show you that they used a contrasting stitching for the neckline (that some of you might not like). I don't know why they did this and if all the tops are the same (I mean if the stitching happens on a navy stripe) but it isn't a big deal for me, even if I was a bit surprised at first:
I love this top and to me it is worth it because I think I am going to wear it a lot but if you are in doubt I would wait for a sale, as the quality doesn't match the price tag.
Do you own or are interested in this top? Have you made an irrational purchase recently (something that you had to have even if the quality is not up to standards?)

The navy and saddle color combination is very chic.
ReplyDeleteI actually like this top very much, but it needs to go on sale!!!! looks very stylish with black pants, on you!!
ReplyDeleteI love this top too but to hear that it's not actually silk is very surprising and disappointing!! But it looks fantastic on you (I had to laugh when you said it is mesmerizing. I think striped tops have the same effect on me!!)
ReplyDeleteI really like this top on you Ema. You've tempted me to add it to my wishlist for when it goes on sale.
ReplyDeleteHow awful that it's not silk but it says so in the product name. Well, I still love a stripe. Thanks for sharing pics!
ReplyDeleteI liked this top and I would consider it on sale, given that it's not real silk. Its name is totally misleading!
ReplyDeletehave they changed the name on the website since you posted
ReplyDeletethe link in your blog to reflect the actual composition of the fabric?
It is actually a very nice top but not worth almost $100, are you keeping it
Thanks for that great article!
