The necklace tee was part of the last rollout and since it was the only graphic tee in the rollout and the first "holiday" tee it got some attention. Personally, it immediately struck me as JCrew knocking off the Loft knocking off JCrew, in a perfect fashion circle of sort. I am pretty sure that the Loft had a very similar necklace tee last year that probably wasn't priced at $42.50 but looked too much like a JCrew knockoff.
Anyway, this tee is styled in the JCrew Collection store window under a tuxedo-style jacket that I don't see online but I tried on in another occasion and will share pics of in the next post. The two together look pretty cool, so I decided to try the tee on. I had read that the tee is quite short so I grabbed a S (instead of my regular XS). Well, short and boxy it is!
As can you see there is a lot of fabric just hanging on the sides. It looks like a tee that has been beaten up or was ruined in the laundry machine. The fabric has probably to do with it since it is a very thin cotton slub that doesn't hold its shape. Not sure what kind of look they were trying to achieve but given that two of me could have fit in the S, I tried a XXS, which is certainly more fitted but also overall "shrunken":
I honestly felt like I was wearing Crewcuts and that gave me an idea. I recently ordered a few Crewcuts winter tees for my daughter and when I received them my first thought was "Why can't they do tees like this for women?". The designs are adorable but more importantly they feel very substantial and thick for winter, like they are not going to fall apart at the first wash (I am talking about the thicker cotton ones, that I prefer to the tissue tees).
So, since I had a return to make at Crewcuts, I decided to try a few tees in a size 14 while I was there. I picked up two not too cutesy designs that would work on a grown-up woman and off I went in the fitting room (I was a bit embarassed, I must say).
The first one is the Girl's long sleeves bow sequin tees. This one was a bit on the thin side and a bit tight on me (especially in the sleeves) in a 14:
Overall it wasn't flattering but I am usually a XS or S in tees so if you are a XXS are are small chested this one will fit you.
The next one is the girl's version of the necklace tee, the Girl's trompe l'oeil necklace tee. This one is more substantial and felt bigger on. I was comfortable in it and guess what? It is definitively longer than the women's one:
On the other side, the Girl's jeweled snowflake sweatshirt is much smaller/shorter and I couldn't do it (I didn't even try, it looked really small).
I am not necessarely looking for a new holiday tee as I still love my snowgem one and I kind of like the idea of wearing it each season. But if there was an amazing embellished tee out there I would probably go for it, I kind of miss them (I just can't phatom what price tag they will put on it if this one goes for $42). On a positive note the PS at the Collection store said that there should be more tees coming, so if you are looking for a new one do not throw yourself on the necklace one and hold out (especially if you are not petite or a XXS and cannot do Crewcuts).
What do you think? Are you borrowing from the kids?

Wow, I can't believe how short the tee is!! I've always loved that their tees were long. Ridiculous. The Crewcuts girls size 14 is too small for me, mainly in the arms, but the boys' tees work well. As do the cashmere sweaters. I actually just ordered the factory fair isle from boys to try out!
ReplyDeleteThere must be a reason for that tee shirt being so short, but it just foesn't work. Plus the cotton really feels flimsy and see-through for a winter tee. What were they thinking?
DeleteThat necklace tee is ridiculous! Thanks for braving the changing room- I always check out the crewcuts in the sale section, and I love it when they feature more of the pieces in the catalogues. My experience of the quality has been very good, and I can usually wear a 14 crewcuts in tops!
ReplyDeleteThis was a Crewcuts only store and my daughter wasn't with me so it was a bit weird but I think that nobody was paying attention to me when I run in ghe fitting rooms. I had never tried Crewcuts before (for myself I mean) except for the Casbah print girl's dress (that didn't fit me at all)
DeleteI saw the necklace tee today, at the Grove in Shrewsbury. It is so skimpy, and nondescript. I like the crewcuts one you are wearing much better. But, caveat. A few years ago, I wandered into Old Navy which was not a store I ever frequented. I was delighted to find the most beautiful "boutique looking" knit shirt I had ever seen. (In the women's department) It was 100% cotton, fit perfectly, had a great cut and real velvet trim, and was in my favorite color. I wore it proudly to pick my son up at school the next day. And, then I saw two 5 and 6th grade girls that were wearing the same top. Needless to say, I never wore it to the school again!
ReplyDeleteYes, I guess if I buy a tee there I could see it on some of my daughter's friends. That would be embarassing, to show up at a playdate in the same outfit than one of the 6 years old girls!
DeleteI am with the others - the crewcut versions are definitely more flattering and stylish! Oh too bad, as I do have a tuxedo jacket and that might have been quite fun!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite "tuxedo" tee is the Masquerade one from a couple of years ago. That was really a good tee, IMO.
DeleteI buy Crewcuts all of the time, shirts and shoes. Mostly I buy basics, tees and other similar shirts, but they are better made in a lot of cases than the other women's shirts out there. Free shipping too.
ReplyDeleteShoes? Tell me more...
ReplyDeleteStay safe Ema and family! xx
ReplyDeleteI too buy crewcuts! I am tall so the tops never fit but the skirts ( size 14) r wonderful & inexpensive for a fashion trend. The sequin skirts R fun in the summer( they have an elastic waist which I wear at my hip for extra length) with their bright colors. I also bought the long tulle skirt in champage which is wonderful! Received so many compliments when I wore it with a black turtleneck, pearls & a denim jacket & boots. Can be dressed up or down. It is fun!
ReplyDeleteI was wearing a Target swim suit one day (an adult size) and there was a pretty hefty "little" girl at the pool in the same suit... so even if you stay out of the children's department, you may be wearing the same clothing as the children :(
