OOTD: Beige and Black

A quick OOTD before we all get busy with the weekend activities. You have already seen a partial version of this outfit in my "new uniform " post but yesterday I wore it for real so I added some finishing touches. Actually, the pants are Minnies and not leggings because after seeing how Pippa Middleton got bashed on the Huffington post for wearing leggings as pants (a year ago, but still), I thought that I wasn't ready (after all she is the best "derriere" alive so if she doesn't get a pass, I don't know who would). The cashmere stripe sweather hits me a little above the hip so if I get rid of the coat it will expose my derriere as well, thus the Minnies. The necklace is old JCrew and is exactly the same colors of the sweater, the rest is Zara (old):

This Zara coat always gets me a lot of compliments. People think that it is a designer coat because of the simple lines and sharp look and I always get a kick out of letting them know that it is Zara. I stopped at Theory yesterday (more on this later but if you are interested in Theory and you have a store nearby, they are giving away a "scratcheable coupon" that will give you a discount of 15%, 20% or 25% off your FP purchase until November 16) and the SA told me that he loved my coat. When I told him that it was Zara he said that he didn't know that Zara made "this kind of coat". Which kind he meant I don't know but I know that Zara can make a good coat. Did I ever tell you I am a Zara big fan?

In case you are wondering where I took these pics, I was at the Loft trying for the hundredth time this peacoat:

I love this peacoat because it is made of boiled wool (I know I am contraddicting myself because I said that I don't like peacoats in general but the stiff fabric that peacoats are generally made or makes for 90% of my disliking them) and it looked so good on Gigi in this post that I had to try it on. But it is the peacoat that wasn't meant to be. The first time that I tried it the store was having a 50% off promo. I was determined to get it for that price but I had a return to make first so I put it on hold. I came back a few hours later but I was with my daughter. The line was very long (which I will never understand because they know that if the have a 50% off promo they will need more staff) and after 10 minutes of "When is it our turn?" we went to get her a smoothie. We came back (with the smoothie) but the line was even longer and when my daughter said disapprovingly "We shouldn't be here" I had no choice but leave (guilty mom).
Yesterday it was 30% off and I was hoping to combine the 30% off with a 20% off coupon that I found in the mail, but at the register they didn't want to combine them so I left it there again. I don't need it that badly, I can wait for a better deal and if sells out tant pis!
The other thing is that in store they only had petite sizes left. The pics above are of a 4P (same size that I had tried the first time around) but I would like to try a 2R to compare. I liked the length but it felt a bit roomy in the chest/shoulders area.

Back to my outfit, I received yesterday what I thought would be an alternative to the cashmere sweater, the striped hoodie that I ordered with the recent 30% off promo. I admit to stalking this one because I really liked the colors, which are sort of a negative version of the striped cashmere and I wanted another sweatshirt as I seem to live in them as of late. However, I am disappointed in the fabric and fit of this one. The fabric is very stiff and the fit is boxy:

This was not marked Final Sale but I paid shipping and it was only $27 (down from $78!) so I think I am going to keep it to wear around the house (not sure if I will venture outside, I don't feel good in it and my husband confirmed the feeling).

That's it! What do you think of the Loft peacoat? Do you have the striped hoodie? Do you think Pippa should get a pass?

  1. I agree about the "leggings are not pants comments", but you are so slender I am sure you can get away with it! I think you will like the hooded sweatshirt better with jeans. I do love the colors- I was tempted myself. I love the elegant simplicity of your first outfit. I am waiting for you post about European fashion from the summer! I have never been to a Zara, but am going to look the next time I am in the city.

    1. You are probably right that this will look better with jeans but I was expecting more fron a $78 sweatshirt.
You are right, I still have to post my pics and fashion finds from Paris but now I have some competition (from Dani) ;-).

  3. No pass for Pippa but you would get the pass!
I wish I could wear the Minnie pant, I like the idea of them. They are always so awful on me.
I'm catching up on your posts and I like your idea of the uniform which is so essential for those mornings. I can't believe you ran into Andrew McCarthy, I had such a crush on him when I was a teenager!
It sounds like you had a great time with our friend! And I have to tell you what I brought back from Paris, I think you will be surprised!
    xo

  4. Hi Dani, welcome back! Thank you for giving me a pass but I am not sure about that!
Not to make you jaleous but I saw Andrew again, he is going to think I am stalking him ;-). I took our friend to the cafe for breafast but no celebrities sightening that morning.
Can't wait to see what you brought from Paris, I can't tell!

  5. Ema - love, love, love the first outfit, especially! I hear you the sweatshirt - when I don't have the feeling about what I am wearing - for example the outfit I posted today, I am miserable the entire day. I really need to start planning the night before!!!

    1. I actually wore it today with jeans and the same coat and it was a great outfit. That coat is magic!

  6. Hi Ema, your beige and black outfit radiates easy urban sophistication, I love it. The Loft peacoat looks great on you, I hope you manage to snag it on sale. I know how difficult it is to go shopping with kids - I keep trying to explain this to my husband so that he gets why I do almost all my shopping online.

    1. Thank you Louise! I know and the older they get the worst. But I really have no excuse because now she is in kindergarten until 3 so I really shouldn't be dragging her in store. The deal was too good that day so I tried but when she said that we shouldn't be there I felt very guilty!

  7. Love, love, love your outfit! Zara has some great things and you know what? My first purchases from Zara were from the time when I considered them 'upscale' , my husband still has a peacoat from them bough some 18 years ago!

    1. I agree, I still have Zara clothes that look like new from my Paris years, the quality is (or was) that good!
      Glad you liked the outfit!

  8. Hi, Ema, what an amazing outfit, and the coat is a treasure. You look lovely. I agree, the Zara in Paris was wonderful, but I haven't found anything there lately.

    1. Zara can be hit or miss, sometimes I go in and I can't find anything and sometimes I would buy the entire stock. I think what they do best is jackets and coats and what they do worst is sweaters. Everything else is in the middle and depends on what you are looking for. The quality and look for the price is quite umbeatable though IMO

  9. I think the "leggings as pants" are a definite Glamour NO- even if you have the derriere to carry it off. As my husband once noted" there should be a law against how much spandex one woman can wear". I think it just looks unfinished. That said, I think the Minnies, at least the ones from a few years ago, can be worn as pants. They are styled better and the fabric is a bit more substantial. I don't like the new ones this year though- I am glad I stocked up a few years ago when they were on sale. As long as my weight stays the same I should get some wear out of them.
Lve the outfit- quite chic and very appropriate for the stylish urban mommy!

    1. Thank you for chiming in on the leggings as pants topic. I think that with a long jacket that covers the derriere they are fine but it was quite shocking to see Pippa with her derriere exposed!
I didn't know that they had changes the Minnies, mine are not the first crop but from two years ago and they feel pretty substantial so I guess thay hadn't cheapened out on them yet.
