Great Find of The Week: The Mel by Melissa Ankle Rainboots

OK, it is very sunny and warm today in the Big Apple and we are expecting 80 degrees for this weekend but I bet that rain and grey skies are just around the corner so better be prepared with rubber shoes.

I have been looking for a while for a pair of ankle rainboots to throw on when it is raining but I don't feel like wearing my (extremely) tall Aigle boots. Sometimes even if the forecasts say that it is going to rain I feel silly to go out all decked in my rainy day outfit and the result is of course that I get caught in the rain and I end up wetting whatever shoes I am wearing (typically my black Revas, that have been recently declassified to rainy day flats, not because they are in fact waterproof but because of all the rain that dropped on them already, making them unsuitable for any other usage).
I find the short version of the Hunter boots and similar styles extremely ugly and I wanted something that I would be actually eager to wear (as opposed to something that I am forced to wear just because it's raining).

I recently spied in the windows of a few boutiques in the neighboorhood a very stilish pair of ankle rainboots but after a little Internet research they turned out to be these Vivienne Westwoods that retail for $150. Yikes, I am not going to spend that much for a pair of rubber boots that don't even cover my calf! However, I noticed that they are made for Vivianne Westwood by the brand Melissa (a Brazilian brand specialized in rubber shoes), so I searched a little bit more and BINGO! I found a similar pair made by Melissa and without the Vivienne Westwood markup. They have exactly the same shape with the pointy toe, come in 4 colors including a cheerful red and have an adorable golden bow as a decoration on the side (made of rubber as well). Best of all, they only cost $55.
I ordered two pairs, black and grey, during the recent Family and Friends event at endless.com (which brought down the price to $44) and decided to keep the grey (the black looks a little bit cheap and also I already have the tall ones in black).
I ordered my true size and they definitively fit small for rain boots (not enough for me to size one up but if you are an half size, size up for sure).
Here they are on me (I haven't worn them outside yet because of course as soon as I bought them it has been dry). They are very easy to put on and take off (bonus for busy moms) and I love them both with my jeans tucked in (so you can see the bow) than out (sorry for the pics, I am terrible at taking pics of shoes, I should take a class):

I really reccomend these if you are looking for a pair of stylish short rain boots that won't break your bank account.
Do you wear short rainboots? Have you ever heard of Melissa?

  1. I have not heard of this brand but they are adorable. I agree that nice rainboots are hard to find. I still wear my tall Hunter boots though I did just buy a low rubber shoe from LlBean. I gave my Aigle boots to a friend as they were flopping off of my foot!

  2. I agree with Dani, they are adorable! Wish I knew about this brand earlier, as my shipment from Sperry just arrived -- I too needed a pair of short rain boots, so I got some lace up duck boots from Sperry, on sale for something like $50. Had I known about the Melissas, I would have gotten them instead!
