Help Needed: How To Wear The Liquid Silk Skirt

Ladies, I have a super-busy day so I will be quick. I have an event tonight I am pretty excited about (a classical music concert followed by a reception at the French Consulate) and I would love to wear my new liquid silk skirt that I have picked up during the recent sale.

This is the most fabulous skirt ever and it SOOOOOO elegant; however, I don't have many options as what to wear on top because the fablisness of the skirt (at least on me) is that it makes my waist appear super-thin, so I don't want to cover it with an oversized sweater/long cardi. Now a cropped and very fitted sweater would be the best thing for the purpose of showing the waistline but I only have one in a color that isn't very evening-like, as you will see.
So I am going to show you the few things I have tried with it and I would love if you could tell me what works best in your opinion (I hadn't the time to accessorize but I will wear a sparkly necklace or a pearl one). By the way, the invitation says something like "dressy outfit recommended" (it's in French, tenue habillee), which I haven't seen in a long time on an invitation. Very excited, as I said!

First, the cropped sweater I was talking about, a RL cable short-sleeve cardigan that I don't wear much anymore exactly because it is very cropped and looks best worn without anything else under it, which can be a little bit sexy for everyday errands. It would be perfect in a blush color or a navy but it is in a candy pink very similar to a color that Jcrew used to make and whose name escapes me right now (light berry?):

The second option is to wear another cardigan which is not as cropped but still pretty short and quite fitted (the advantage being that the color is darker, even if doesn't look much darker in this pic, so more appropriate for the evening):

Third cardigan option, my cashmere crewneck in rose dust. I remembered this one being shorter, so I would leave it open and maybe belted:

The advantage of this cardigan over the first two options is that it matches the color of my Talbots patent pumps, which are the only pair of shoes that I can wear with this skirt (my other pair of pumps are black).
Under the cardigans, I am planning to wear the Adriana silk top from spring 2010. It isn't exactly the same color, but with a cardigan, it will do. The skirt being silk you can tuck in only a very thin, silky top without creating bulk. This is how it looks without the cardi (very elegant, non?):

Last option (and probably the more appropriate for an evening reception) is to wear my Tatum jacket instead of a cardigan. This jacket works with the skirt because it is very fitted at the waist, although I think I prefer a cardigan. What do you think?

As a side note I am a little bit mad at these retailers who inundate us with midi skirts without also giving us more options for tops to wear with them (cropped and fitted sweaters aren't really a trend and besides a very expensive Theory angora short-sleeved sweater I haven't found anything else on the market. If you have any leads let me know, I plan to wear this skirt quite a lot to cockails party this Fall, so I can invest in a top to wear with it).

Thanks for reading and the advise if you have time!

  1. Hi Ema! I like the third option, with the blush colored cardigan. I also like the first option, very simple/classy. The skirt really does look beautiful on you!

  2. Love all the combos, but I agree with LRA that #1 and #3 are the top two. I love the color-blocking of #1, but think the 3rd actually looks a bit more evening and maybe more appropriate for your event.

    Have fun!!

  3. I love options 3 and 4. It looks very classy with the Tatum! But #3 is probably the most "evening" especially if you can ditch the cardigan once you're inside. The skirt looks amazing on you!

  4. I prefer options 3 and 4. I think that #1 is too casual for the skirt and the event.

How exciting this event will be! You'll have to fill us in please!

  8. Ooh, I missed this earlier today! This is too late, but I like #3 the best. The pale pink cardigan and navy silk combination is very elegant and classic looking, and it would look great with pearls.

  10. I'm a cardigan girl but the Tatum is probably better for a diplomatic reception. The Adriana looks so great with the skirt!

  11. I think the Tatum blazer is the perfect fit. The blush cardigan works, as JCrewJD said, only if you can take it off once inside.

  15. So curious to see which you chose. I wonder if there is a choice to make between French evening or American evening. My choice is for #1, which looks dressy enough to me, but others see as casual and hey...I'm American. A Californian to boot. *lol* I also agree the blush cardi is very pretty. I hope you find some options for the midi. Do agree blouse options seem a bit limited for them. At least the ones in a finer material like this silk.

  16. What size did you buy? I am debating between 0 or 00 or 2...

  17. Helen, I bought a size 2. I didn't even try the 0 as I loved how the 2 fit.
